Bombsquad’s Breakdwon (Div 1 & 2) – Week 3

Some great games took place last week. Of course I mean the last week of FPF action and not actually last week with Beyoncé, power outage, Ray Ray and a decent game once the power came back on. We will have a very brief recap of those games and then look at some of this week’s action so let’s get the ball moving.

Countdown to detonation:

9. The Bills took down the ever improving Express 37-32. Chad Byers was back in top form, delivering 6 TD’s, two of which went to P.O. Brunet. Pat Chenard was equally consistent, but just missed some big conversions as he only had 8 incompletions. 20-28 for 196 and 4 TD’s with no interceptions as well as a rushing TD. Simon Charbonneau-Campeau made his return with 5 grabs for 58 yards and 2 TD’s. Let’s see if that magical chemistry returns. As for the Bills, it is looking like business as usual which is not good news for the rest of the league.

8. Montreal’s Finest struck fear in the heart of Terror Squad defeating them 48-25. Kevin Wyeth basically used two receivers for the whole game. With a huge performance coming from Guillaume Ward who had 9 grabs for 159 yards and 5 touchdowns. Craziness. Tam Vilaydeth did not have a great game; he may have thrown 4 TD’s but he also tossed 3 INT’s. All of which were to Karim Binette, but I thought I remembered the man with the big Hair getting one….oh well.

7. The Rainmakers took down the Wild Boys 36-32 in a thrilling game that saw the Wild Boys with four chances to win at the end. Ryan Kastner did what he had to do, tossing 6 TD’s for a big 245 yards but he also tossed a pick-six to Anthony Lacroix-Hull. Luckily, Tim Kraemer grabbed 3 TD’s. Mathieu René was decent against the Div 1 squad, tossing 4 TD’s, but he also threw a pick-six to Ben Léger. In the end, the Wild Boys just couldn’t put it away and the Rainmakers chalked up another W.

6. In a shootout that ended up being pretty useless, Purple Haze tied Hall of Famers 46-46. Rick Nincheri hit Louis Richard for 5 TD’s, Justin Smolar hit Adam Crystal for 5 TD’s. The biggest difference in the stats is Louis Richard taking an interception back for 6 points. But basically this game meant nothing until playoffs roll around.

5. The Mercenaries barely beat the Ducks 32-31. The difference once again in a game is converts. Both QB’s led their team to 5 scores. Di Fazio passing for all 5 and Crisi-Lauzon passing for 4 and running 1 in. Kenny Baye caught 2 TD’s for the Ducks as did Hervé Akakpo. On the Mercs side, it was the returning Carmine Pollice who racked up 2 TD’s. This game was a battle with neither team forcing a turnover but both QB’S having problems completing passes. A very even match between two very good teams.

4. The Gladiateurs edge out the Pantheres 43-38 in another shootout. Once again a great matchup at QB. The efficient Francois Lebeau tossing for 269 yards with 6 TD’s. With his brother Marc Lebeau catching 3 of them. Big story here is Lebeau managed 26 completions. That is incredible and they were all over the field. The veteran Mike Grilli also had 6 TD’s but 2 interceptions which proved costly. Once again Dany Ostiguy was the big target catching 3 scores on 115 yards. Another tremendous battle.

3. The division 1 TG with the little r thing pounded the Wolverines 44-27. Paul Lapierre used some Old Skool boys to get the job done scoring with Center Mark Delauriers three times and Shane Williams twice for identical yards and catches. Lapierre had a great game tossing 7 TD’s. On the other side Tony Tabet struggled with 4 TD’s and 2 INT’s and just over 50% of his passes completed. Shane Paquette was his main weapon on this day, catching 6 for 57 and 2 TD’s. Wolverines have had a very rough start to the season.

2. In the second game of their double header this weekend, the Hall Of Famers actually managed a decision….barely, as they defeated the Top Guns 39-38. Justin Smolar once again hit his absolutely favorite target (BY FAR), Adam Crystal, for another 10 catches and another 5 scores!! His stats are a little offensive…get it….offensive…oh brother. On the other side, fill-in QB Scott Kelly kept the Top Guns in the game by throwing for 287 yards and 6 scores like Smolar did. And both QB’s had 1 INT. Once again, converts! Nick Gaudreault was good for the Top Guns catching 3 scores, but the Hall Of Famers get the win.

1. Finally, Flag Moi L’Sac continues to dominate as they neuter the Wolfpack 45-25. Even with Alex Nadeau-Piuze throwing 2 INT’s, he managed 5 passing and 2 running scores.  Felix Prevost was once again the big receiver for the squad, with 105 yards on 5 grabs and 3 TD’s. Pascal Murray was having a bad day at the office. Throwing 4 scores but 3 picks. The Pack is going to have to get back in the game if they want a shot and who is going to take down L’Sac?

Boom goes the dynamite? What dynamite? Where is it? Where did it come from and who lit it?

The Golden Boy for the week for Division 1 has to be my boy Guillaume Ward who caught 5 scores and tallied 149 yards. SICK!

The SHOWSTOPPA for Div 1 also has to come from the Finest as Karim Binette managed 3 INT’s…sort of. But he was all over the field.

Now for my surprise pick of the week. My Golden Boy and SHOWSTOPPA is Louis Richard for Purple Haze who not only had 5 TD’s but also helped secure the tie with a big pick 6! Great overall performance needs recognition! I know some other receivers might have had 5 but that pick makes Louis’ total 6.

Now if the season were to end today, who would you have as your Top performers? Here are mine for you to debate and rip apart!

Div 1

QB of the Year: Kevin Wyeth – Finest.  If you look at the stats, the only category he doesn’t lead is yards. He would have to take it.

Receiver of the Year would be really tough but I think I lean towards Guillaume Ward only because…

Two Way Player of the Year would be Bobby Mikelberg who has the best receiving stats and defensive in D1.

Defensive Player of the Year would go to Karim Binette who is the sack leader and up there in tackles as well.

Division 2

QB of the Year by FAR is Justin Smolar of the Hall of Famers, who has ridiculous numbers thanks in part to…

Receiver of the Year: Adam Crystal who has 15 TD’s in 4 games. Not to mention 498 yards receiving but it also helps to have….

Two Way Player of the Year: Ryan Lelinowski, also of the Hall of Famers, who has top marks in receiving and on defence, where he has 4 picks.

Defensive Player of the Year would be a tough choice but I would go with Flag Moi L’Sac’s (and Hamilton Tiger-Cat) Jonathan Beaulieu-Richard who has 7 tackles, 3 INT’s and 2 passes defended.

Now you can all go argue about it. You want to win, beat these guys’ statistical output by year end!

Here is a look at some of the matchups coming up this week.

In a game I am very curious about, the Rainmakers take on Flag Moi L’Sac, who have already defeated the D1 Bills by 16 points. L’Sac has seemingly come out of nowhere and has put the rest of the league on notice. Now they are even laying down the law on the D1 squads. And I truly believe this will be a very good game. The Rainmakers have been at this a long time and have a lot of chemistry. L’Sac is a team that seems very consistent. Look for this to be a close one but in the end I think the edge will go to the Rainmakers.

In a battle between two of the biggest QB’s and a rematch of the Hurricanes and Finest, Montreal’s Finest will be taking on Purple Haze. Kevin Wyeth versus Rick Nincheri. The faces may have changed but the QB’s stayed the same. Wyeth has been riding high for the past year and Nincheri would like nothing more than to stop that momentum. The Finest will be without their centre I hear from a reliable source. Something about Fort Lauderdale, but Karim Binette will fill in nicely. He has won a Championship at that position. Robbie Robinson and his defense will have a tough task ahead of them. Are they up to it? Will the Finest be able to lock down the Haze’s offence? Go check out the game and find out.

TG (with that annoying r thingy) takes on the highest scoring team in either division, the Hall of Famers. I love this matchup, mostly because now we will see what Adam Crystal can do when facing people on defense like Mark Delauriers and Shane Williams. These guys like to play their defense and this is not your finesse style of D either. I am very curious to see if those insane numbers can keep on coming against this team. Also, TG has a great offense of their own which will keep the HOF O off the field for periods during the game. This is such a curious matchup I really don’t know which way to go. But I personally have faced these defenders and I can’t imagine them giving up the stats we have seen to this point from HOF. I am taking TG and their stupid r with a circle.

In another very interesting matchup that some people might not have noticed, Terror Squad is facing off with Top Guns, who are vastly improved from last year. They have lost all 3 games so far but the last two were division games and were very close including a one-point loss to a top team. But that team had the top receiver in D2 and Terror Squad has Pat Jerome. The question is will the Top Guns learn from their mistakes and be able to shut down or at least minimize the impact of Jerome? I am going to go crazy and say yes. My upset pick of the week is Top Guns over Terror Squad.

Great matchups to see,

We’re almost halfway home.

More snow there will be,

Lucky we play in a dome.

So whether you win or fall,

Make sure to have fun.

I wish the best to all,

While my ass will be in the sun!
