Bombsquad’s Breakdown (Div A) – Week 10
In a season with great records and accomplishments we now get to move ahead to the real reason we all come out to play. The second season. The season where one loss sends you home and each win brings you closer to glory. Here’s what happened in the past week.
Countdown to detonation.
3. The Mercenaries defeat a feisty Kingz squad 55-42. Francois Lebeau seemed to find a new brother this year in Charles Baillargeon, who stepped up and caught 9 balls for 133 yards and 3 TD’s. Lebeau had a good game himself with 299 yards passing and 7 TDs. But the 19 incompletions were his undoing on this day, not to mention the fact that they were facing a motivated team with record-breaking opportunities. Pollice took advantage of this game to break the record by tossing 8 TDs, leaving him with a monster 63 on the season. As for Lapierre, he tied the record and needs to buy Pollice a bottle of scotch. He had an opportunity to break the record, but what must have been recorded history’s biggest smile was wiped off his face quickly as he also pulled his groin and dropped a ball that was right on target. Very amusing to behold. Later in the game he scored to tie the record of 27. Great job all around.
2. The Rainmakers defeat the Triple Sixers and avoid a week one matchup with O.N.S. A failed 2 point convert attempt was the difference in this game. Both QBs had average games as they both tossed 4 TDs. Once again Pat Jerome and JF Marcotte carried the bulk of the load for the Sixers. The ball was spread fairly evenly for the Rainmakers. This game was all about defensive stops and grinding it out. After this battle the Rainmakers get a chance at the Mercenaries, angainst whom they are 1-1 this season. The Triple Sixers have a longer road ahead of them as they must play in the 4 versus 5 game this Sunday.
1. DA Finest defeat a Craig O’Brien-less O.N.S. squad once again. This game was a great battle as Brett Burchell grabbed the reins for O.N.S. and tossed 5 TDs for 216 yards and 2 INTs. Jeff Millar had a great game catching 6 for 94 yards and 2 TDs. Tony Lalla was also on fire with 7 receptions for 75 yards and 2 touchdowns. As for DA Finest it was another day at the office as Wyeth Earp tossed 6 TDs with two of them delivered to Two Way Player of the year Kishon Thompson (who also had 115 yards receiving). This rounded out a strong season after losing their first game. But no one on DA Finest will be satisfied with anything less than a Championship. As for O.N.S., they are in the playoffs and that is all they want.
BOOM. Just like that hotel bomb in the movie Unknown that blew the hot blonde all over parts of Berlin.
My Golden Boy this week is Charles Baillargeon who had a stellar game against the Mercs catching 9 balls for 133 yards and 3 TDs. Great game and sorry to see your season end.
The SHOWSTOPPA this week is the Rainmakers defence who for the first time this year held a team under 30 points and more importantly came up huge on the 2 point convert try that could have sent them to 4th place.
This season has been a stellar one to cover. Great games. Exciting finishes. Records broken or matched. But more importantly it is the level of play which has grown by leaps and bounds. Teams like the Kingz who have kept the same inner core have struggled to keep up with the times. Meanwhile a team like the Rainmakers maintain a core but make key acquisitions which keep them in the hunt season after season. But tell me, whether you love them or hate them you have to be impressed with performances by people like Kevin Wyeth who missed a game this year and is still neck and neck for second. Or Ryan Kastner who is always near the top. And I will say it. I know a lot of people truly do not like this man but you have to be impressed with a 63 touchdown season regardless of who does it. Regardless of who the QB is throwing to, that is an amazing feat for anyone. Especially given how close the competition is in this division. Think about this for one moment. The Mercenaries have Carmine Pollice and his 63 touchdown passes and Paul Lapierre with his 27 touchdown catches but this team still finished in second place. Moreover it was a three way tie for second which they won due to point differential.
Look how far we have come. Look how competitive we have become. Where it has become a rarity to see a number one ranked team also win the title. Where you enter the playoffs confident but also with the realization that any number of teams can take you down on any given Sunday. This is where FlagPlus has come in such a short period of time. This is the league we play in. And this is the beginning of the playoffs. Saddle up princess; it’s going to be a bumpy ride!
Well I only have one game to pick this week so let’s get to it.
The Triple Sixers take on the One Night Stands in this Wildcard face off for the right to meet DA Finest in the next round. The last time these two teams met, O.N.S. actually got their first win of the season defeating the Triple Sixers 46-41. It was a great game where one turnover made some of the difference. But it was a battle to the bitter end and I would not expect anything less in this game. I’m sure Craig O’Brien will be back at the helm for the playoff run but I think the outdoor tournament might just take too much wind out of the One Nighters’ sails so I am going to have to go with Karim Chaoual and the Triple Sixers. But come out to watch. It will be worth it.
All stats are done,
They’re all in the past,
Forget your awards,
Time for your team to last.
It won’t be long,
A few weeks left,
Don’t miss a second,
Don’t take a breath.
An extra long poem,
Start the playoffs right,
Gentlemen to your corners,
And at the bell FIGHT!!
