Bombsquad’s Breakdown (Div 1/2) – Week 10
So ends the season. We had some movement, but all in all I think everything ended the way season expected to. Some highs and some lows. Teams stepped up and some fell off the map. But don’t take my word for it. Let’s get to the breakdown.
Countdown to detonation.
D1
3. Montreal’s Finest defeat the Expos 53-37. Kevin Wyeth ended the season strong with 273 yards passing and 7 TD’s. He spread the ball all over the field hitting three receivers for multiple TD’s. Both Akked Moore and Nathan Taylor had 87 and 88 yards respectively and 2 TD’s apiece. On the other side Chad Byers and Ricky Martin put up ridiculous numbers. Byers had 292 yards on 14 completions and 6 TD’s, but also had a very important INT. Ricky Martin had 10 grabs for 182 yards and 5 TD’s. Golden Boy you think? Both these teams have a bye next week.
2. The Demons dowse the Rainmakers in a playoff preview 41-24. Ryan Kastner was definitely able to move the ball but the Demons defense would close the doors every time the Rainmakers came knocking in the first half. Pollice did what he had to do hitting Jacques Void for three scores and Stephane Chartrand for two. Both QB’s exchanged INT’s but it was really the Demons defense that stepped up in the redzone above all else. That will have to change if the Rainmakers hope to move on past next week’s play-in game.
1. Old Skool take out the under-manned Redhawks 43-24. Andy Peterkin used Shane Williams to his full potential tossing him 2 TD’s on 3 grabs for 97 yards. Peterkin threw 6 TD’s on his 14 completions. Cesar Sanchez was throwing again for the Redhawks and he did a decent job. He managed 4 TD passes but two important picks, both by Old Skool defender Mike Cuscuna. As I mentioned, the Redhawks were under-manned, but that would not have helped them on this day. And so D1 is now set.
D2
7. As I boldly predicted, the Blazers upset the Wolverines 43-38. Leon Holder had a very strong game with only 6 incompletions and 6 TD passes on 250 yards. Tabet was equally great with 252 yards passing and 6 TD’s. But Holder also rushed for one, which is where the difference lies. Sean Kennedy was huge for the Blazers with 103 yards and 3 TD’s. Kenton Lowe actually had the other 3 TD’s. Tabet used Raffi Bastadjian to do most of his scoring as he caught 3 TD’s, but as usual, Tabet spread the ball around. It all came down to the last play with the Wolverines inside the 5 yard line and one play left after an amazing tackle by Karim Binette on the play before. And the Blazers held.
6. In the battle of what WAS 1st and 2nd we have another no decision as the Trojans tie the G-Men 31-31. The G-Men decided to use Paul Kamel at QB, as well as Gianni Settino. Regardless, both did okay but the tie cost them their seeding. Meanwhile, the Trojans end with their second tie of the season. Vinny Gualano had another 2 TD game but Sean Avraam had the most catches with 7 and yards with 62. Both G-Men QB’s love Nareg Yessayan as he had 7 grabs for 75 yards. Danny Calla caught 2 TD’s trading in his rusher position to make a difference on offense. But like I said, no decision.
5. The Mercenaries pound the Triple Sixers 38-20. Gino Di Fazio had a great game with 256 yards passing with only 6 incompletions and 6 TD’s. He hit rusher Andrew Adams twice, for a total of 80 yards and 2 TD’s. Karim Chaoual used Pat Jerome for 114 yards and a score, but the Mercs defense would come up big on 4th downs and stop the Sixers throughout the night. A disappointing finish for the Sixers, and great finish for the Mercs.
4. The Tomahawks pound the Top Guns behind veteran QB Remi Portugais who tossed 5 TD’s and spread the ball all over. The Top Guns were without their QB and so tried using three different guys. None of which were successful as they all threw INT’s. At this point it doesn’t matter as both teams make the playoffs. The Tomahawks had no problem with the Top Guns but now must enter the playoffs using QB Mike Grilli again.
3. The One Night Stands fall short on a two-point convert attempt and fall to the Wolfpack 25-24. The O.N.S. defense managed to actually hold the Wolfpack to 25 points. Unfortunately for O.N.S., the Wolfpack defense was equally effective. Both QB’s had similar stats and it came down to converts once again. The Wolfpack used this win to improve their standing and gain a first-round bye. O.N.S. was locked in to their seed regardless of this outcome. It will be interesting to see what happens this week.
2. Victorious Secret barely beat the Gladiateurs in a close game 25-24. A tale of two halves. V.S. dominated the first half 19-6. But the Gladiateurs fought back with an 18-6 second half. Unfortunately, the whole season for the Gladiateurs, came down to one two-point convert. One point convert to tie or a two-pointer to win. Gladiateurs QB Lebeau had a rough first half but really pulled it together in the second to try and get his team into the playoffs. Unfortunately Paul Lapierre’s first half was just enough with one more convert to secure the victory. Great effort by the Gladiateurs and despite not qualifying for the post-season, what a season by QB Francois Lebeau.
1. MOMO Nation finally get their first win of the year, defeating the Air Squad 27-12. Yanick Vanasse QB’ed MOMO into the endzone four times and twice to his favorite target Jean-Nichol Derenoncourt, Alexandre Doucet was big as well with 61 yards and a score. Nick Lafond was not very good for Air Squad completing only 10 passes on 26 attempts. Hakim Kasbi-Filiatrault was the lone bright spot for the Squad catching 5 for 70 yards and a score. Air Squad looks rough heading into the playoffs and too little too late for MOMO. But it’s always nice to see a team finish on a good note.
BOOM. Like a cannon signaling the beginning of the playoffs.
D1
My Golden Boy this week has to be the big man Ricky Martin, who led in every category with 10 receptions, 182 yards and 5 TD’s!!! Somebody better stop him in the playoffs.
My SHOWSTOPPA this week is Mike Cuscuna of Old Skool who pulled off two interceptions to get the stops needed to secure his team a victory. Great work.
D2
My Golden Boy(s) this week are teammates Leon Holder and Sean Kennedy who stepped up HUGE to get their team into the playoffs. Holder completed 78.6% of his passes and tossed 6 TD’s while Kennedy had 103 yards and 3 TD’s to lead his team. Congrats on the Playoff berth, boys.
My SHOWSTOPPA this week is the entire Blazers defense for stopping the Wolverines inside the 5-yard line to catapult themselves in the playoffs. Good team effort against a very good team.
Now we are at the second part of our season. So let us take a look at this week’s playoff matchups!!
D1
In the only game of the D1 playoff schedule this week, the Demons take on the struggling Rainmakers. But the Rainmakers aren’t dead yet. The Rainmakers played the Demons last week and held them to 13 points in the second half. They also scored 24 in the second half. If they can put two halves together like that, they have a shot. But the Demons are a very strong team. They have a very talented squad. QB of the year Carmine Pollice has the receiver of the year, Stephane Chartrand, Benny Goodfriend, Sean Kennedy and fellow H.O.F. player Paul Lapierre. I do not think the Rainmakers will put together the game they need to win. I say the Demons win.
D2 Conference A
The Triple Sixers take on the surging Blazers. The Blazers are nowhere near the team their record says they are. They have had hard fought games and very close losses to some of the top teams in the division over the last little while. The Triple Sixers do not look like the team they used be, losing close games and winning close games against bad teams. The Blazers need to stop the Sixers’ offense and keep up their scoring streak. Leon Holder cannot afford to turn the ball over. The Sixers’ need to stop Kenton Lowe and Sean Kennedy if they want to win this game. They also have to change up the offense and get creative. It seems teams are starting to understand Karim Chaoual’s play calling. This will be a great game. I am playing in this one, so I am not picking.
The Air Squad takes on a very motivated Wolverines team after their loss last week. The Air Squad have been struggling to put up points in the last little while. The Wolverines have stumbled a bit following a great start. But the Wolverines have a lot of experience. Not to mention they have D1 receiver of the year Jacques Void and former two-way player of the year Marc Champagnie. I think the Air Squad have talent and will make noise in the future. But not on this day. I think Tony Tabet is going to pick apart the Air Squad defense and I honestly believe the Air Squad will have a lot of problems scoring on this Wolverine defense. Not a good combination. Wolverines win.
Conference B
The revived One Night Stands take on the Tomahawks. O.N.S. has been a handful as of late. Now you take into consideration Mike Grilli has not QB’ed in 3 games, Remi Portugais is not eligible to throw for the Tomahawks, which leaves them with a QB who hasn’t thrown in a month taking on a team who almost beat the Wolfpack and dismantled the G-Men. This does not bode well for the Tomahawks. Can they stop Andrew Blevings? Can they stop Kevin Wyeth from completing most of his passes? I don’t think they can. O.N.S. is on fire and the Tomahawks have a cold QB. I give O.N.S. the edge here.
Finally the G-Men take on the Top Guns. I would love to take the time to speak about how this game will play out. I could probably even make it sound dramatic. But you have an experienced team taking on a first year team. You have a team that was in the top two of the division for the entire season against a team that was near the bottom all season. The Top Guns are a young team with a bright future once they really adapt to the indoor game. But they have the worst possible draw against a team that had a bye slip through their fingers and are not very happy about it. Best of luck Top Guns. I hope you make it a great game. But I believe the experience of the G-Men will win out on this day.
Been a long season,
Now the time is at hand.
For Darkhorses and favorites,
To exert their command.
For fame and for glory,
Which team will fold?
And who will be left,
Standing alone with the Gold.
That is it for me here. I sincerely wish each and every team the best of luck moving forward. You can send me your own predictions to [email protected] or any type of raw juicing recipes. But until next time, another week has been defused.
