Bloodmachines make their presence felt; Week 2 recap
Welcome to Week 3 of the FPF spring season. So far the first two weeks have showed us that teams are not only excited to be back, but they were eager to shake off the inevitable rust that occurred since the Winter Season ended.
JeanGuy rusher extraordinaire Simon Laporte must’ve caught last week’s article when I talked about him possibly having to look over his shoulder after the Royalty’s Anthony Lucarino’s 4 sack performance in his team’s Week 1 victory over the Looney Goons.
Laporte came out and showed everybody why he’s the sack master that he is by recording 2 sacks against team no name© last Sunday night. Unfortunately his performance wasn’t enough to carry his team to a W as they fell 26-7.
Sunday night sees the first matchup of teams that played in the Winter Season, when the Smokin’ Axolotls take on the One Man Show formerly known as Wax On Wax Off. There will be some freshness to this game as both teams didn’t lock horns last winter. Alas, Jad Aridi isn’t playing for this spring’s S.A team. Aridi squaring off against O.N.S’s Dangerous Danny D’Amour (yeah I’m bringing it back!) would’ve been a sight to see.
I see the Tigers have added Andrew Denis Lynch to their roster this season. The former Orange Crush WR is a solid addition that given his numbers so far, appears to be paying off. How often Tigers’ QB Rahul Mohan gets the ball in his hands will prove just how valuable he’ll really be.
High 5
Danny D’Amour -The aforementioned Dangerous Danny D’Amour put on a clinic Monday night in Brossard against Flight of the Conchords. His Defensive performance alone would’ve been enough to get him on the list as he recorded 2 INTs, 3 Tackles, and 1 Pass Deflection.
His Offensive production was even better, as he registered 7 catches for 90 yards and 4 TDs. The Smokin’ Axolotls better have a game plan for him this Sunday.
Felix-Antoine Lavigne – The Bloodmachines two-way rookie had a breakout performance last Sunday against the Big Blue Wrecking Crew. He caught a team-high 4 passes for 37 yards and 2 TDs to go along with a tackle and a game-high 2 INTs.
Isiah Allard – Talk about an impressive two weeks. After shredding the aforementioned Smokin’ Axolotls Defense to the tune of 4 catches for 67 yards and 3 TDs in Week 1, Allard was at it again Monday night the TDs and Beer WR played a key role in his team’s 25-24 win over Looney Goons. We’ll have to see if the 3rd year player can keep his 3 TD scoring streak alive this Sunday against Los Guapos squad.
The Bloodmachines – Without a shadow of a doubt they have looked like the team to beat so far this season. After two games they have only given up an impressive 19 points, and have scored nearly an eye-opening 70. This Sunday they go up against The Fat and the Furious who rebounded nicely with a 27-26 thriller of a win over the Tigers after falling short to the Fuzzy-Kittens the opening week of the season.
Been There Done That Defense– As impressive as the Bloodmachines were in their shut win over the Big Blue Wrecking Crew, B.T.D.T was just as inspiring defensively in their 38-13 win over Mile Public House. They picked off M.P.H QB Simon Gauthier 6 times. Been There Done That rookie DB’s Wicky Mergunorn and Maxime Fournier each had 3 INTs apiece. Fantastic outing boys. Let’s see you guys bring the noise Monday night against JeanGuy.
Step It Up
The Fat and The Furious Run Defense – Even a team as good as Montreal’s Finest knows, even when you win, there are always things you can do better. The same line of thinking should apply to The Fat and The Furious.
While they were able to hang on to get the 27-26 win over the Tigers, there was one major flaw that they’ll need to fix ASAP, and that‘s their run defense. After giving up only 16 yards to Fuzzy-Kittens pivot Jordan Robert Chartrand in Week 1, they looked like the 2014 Chicago Bears as surrendered nearly 60 yards apiece to the Tigers’ Rahul Mohan (58) and Jameel Greenidge (59). They also gave up a rushing TD to Andrew Denis Lynch.
If they want to reach their potential this season, they’ll need to take care of the ground game.
QB Play – While we have seen some solid quarterbacking so far this season from the likes of the Falcons’ Dylan Garber, Los Guapos’ Patrick Malouf, the Smash Bros’ Jonah Cohen and the Bloodmachines duo of Charles-Olivier Lavigne and Nicolas Blais to name a few, we have also seen some not so good QB play as well.
For the QBs like Simon Gauthier, James D’Andrea, Max Kevin Jocelyn (little JaMarcus Russell) and Sergio Sicoli who are struggling right now, take it easy. Whether you play CIS, QMJFL, CFL, NFL, or in our great league, the best way to be successful is to simplify things and take what the defense gives you. Throwing the long ball too often and trying to force throws will lead to nothing but trouble.
Practice also makes perfect. I can tell you first hand. Rent as field or take advantage of the beautiful weather and go to a park near you and run some routes and work on your timing and chemistry. My Div B team has been practicing for over a month. While we are definitely far from perfect, I can see the evolution of our Offense starting to occur.
Take the time and put in the work. It’ll pay off in the long run.
Blowouts – Out of the 10 games last week, 7 ended in blowouts. Yes it’s early in the season, and some teams are still finding their way, but the amount of one-sided games is still a little disturbing. Here’s to hoping Week 3 will be a bit more competitive.
Picks
To make things a little more interesting for everybody, Yannick Dotson who writes the French version of the Div. E article and I, will go head to head each week with our picks.
I was about to talk a little trash to Yannick about going up against me in picks after my sterling record in the Winter campaign, but after going 5-5 last week…I decided to shut my mouth.
