BACK TO THE CO-ED 2 ACTION: WEEK 7 RECAP!
Finally, report cards are behind us and we can focus on the weekly upkeep of the division! If you enjoyed the grade I gave you: congrats, I think you’ve earned it! If you’re feeling a bit sour and crabby about a low grade: You’re probably right and I’m super open to you proving me wrong on the field! A low grade doesn’t necessarily mean you are a bad team, more so that you may need more practice before you can hit certain milestones! Either way, a lot has been happening that I haven’t been able to mention or comment on and I’m feeling a bit pent up, so get ready for a word vomit of FPF shenanigans!
In this article, we will be taking a blast from the past and try to recap the last 2 weeks and what they mean for the playoff race! I’m also going to take another look at the awards race and see what changes may have happened while I was busy giving out Subjective grades (notice the capital S on Subjective) and also give out my new Power Rankings! Needless to say, I got a lot to get off my chest and I have less than enough time to do it (these articles take me longer than I’d like to admit…), so without further ado, I’ll stop talking nonsense and talk about something we all care about: FOOTBALL!
.
“WHAT’S THE 411 ‘HUN”:
- Back in Week 5 LES RANCEURS pulled an impressive upset and were able to beat KISS MY HUGS! Since then, they have been on a big 3 game win-streak, winning against: BACK THAT PASS UP and BALLHARD UNIVERSITY (this week on Wednesday)! Now sitting at 4-2, LES RANCEURS have broken into the Top 10 and are looking to win out the rest of their season. However, 2 big challenges await them in the form of WHO’S GONNA CARRY THE BOATS and MEAN MACHINES. I’m excited to see where this team falls and how much more Eric Namts can climb the defensive leaderboards!
- 2 Weeks ago I gave SHOW ME YOUR TDZ a B- grade, and since then, they have been working to prove me wrong! Including their forfeit against the BULLS last week, they have been able to accumulate 134 points in 3 games! However, having 2 weeks of not playing games and then coming back into a double header week – having to play Sunday and Monday – against KISS MY HUGS and KAMIKAZE, might spell disaster for their chances at staying above water! If I’m doing some quick Math: It looks like most teams will need to have at least 8 points (4 wins) to stay out of the elimination zone, and with only 3 games left to push higher into the rankings, it is SUPER important that they win at least 1 of them if they want to have a chance at safety.
- What a time for THE BLACK WOLFS: In week 5 they won 2 games back to back to get their first 2 wins of the season! Then disaster struck when they had to go up against the undefeated TONIX and lost by 1 point to LES GRANDS CHUMS. With no games in Week 8, THE BLACK WOLFS will need to come out in Week 9 with a vengeance. With Rodney Alcime leading the offence, and Joyce Généus and Kendely Cassy leading the defence, the team will need to rely on their pack tactics to get the win over LES RANCEURS and WHO’S GONNA CARRY THE BOATS, who are both on a bit of a Win streak!
- AT LEAST WE TRIED AGAIN were able to knock my TOTS out of the running as an undefeated team in Week 6! An incredibly close game that ended 22-18 (less than a TDs difference) could have realistically been anyone’s game! Some of the TOTs showed up late to the game, and without Kenny Boutilier on the roster, the TOTs couldn’t quite keep up with Darryl and his team of athletes. Jimmy-Lee Janvier came out for ALWTA and had a great game – going 5/5 and a TD. Darryl was also able to contain David De Andrade! Not that David is a big runner, but having someone with Darryl’s speed puts a lot of pressure on QBs and it showed this game! All in all, my #1 receiver pick of the game was actually – Cristina Ionescu of the TOTs, who was able to go 6/6 and bring in a much needed TD to keep the TOT’s dreams alive! Both of these teams have the talent to win most games and are both currently in the Top 8! I’ll be looking to see if ALWTA can overcome their loss against NO PUNT INTENDED and stay in the Top 8!
- IT HAPPENED!!!!!! TONIX MIGHT NOT HAVE SUFFERED DEFEAT, BUT THEIR WIN STREAK WAS BROKEN! WHO’S GONNA CARRY THE BOATS the current #6 seed was able to push TONIX to the limit and came away with a 26-26 tie! In an unprecedented game for TONIX, David Michaud threw 3 INTs and despite 5 HUGE sacks by Hugo Lépine, Alexandre Szalipszki was able to still run for 55 yards and 1 TD! Something must have been in the water that day, because WGCTB pulled out all the stops to ensure TONIX their usual 30+ points and was a big part of the reason that they were able to tie that game, let alone almost win! That being said, that might have been the last chance the division had to give TONIX a loss. They finish the season against BACK THAT PASS UP, CHEFS BANDITS, and BULLS, and I’m not sure if any of those teams will be able to hang with the firepower that TONIX can bring. On the flip side: WHO’S GONNA CARRY THE BOATS should also be able to win out their season, and with this tie against TONIX, make me believe that we may be seeing them in the semi-finals or finals this year!
- Speaking of undefeated teams – NO PUNT INTENDED almost lost against LES GRANDS CHUMS in week 5, barely winning their game 21-20. In a game that came down to Extra Points, LES GRANDS CHUMS showed the division to underestimate them at your own peril! Pushing NO PUNT INTENDED to the limit is no easy feat, but that’s exactly what the CHUMS did! Given, they haven’t been as successful in their past few games, you cannot deny the talent needed to keep up with Sanders Armand and his team of high scorers. With only 3 wins and 4 games left, LES GRANDS CHUMS still find themselves just outside of the elimination zone. 2 more wins should guarantee them a spot in the playoffs, and I can see them doing that in the next 2 weeks. However, a win against MEAN MACHINES would truly cement this team as a contender for a Top 8 spot going into the playoffs!
- LA SECTE finally got their first win in Week 6 against HOT WINGS while scoring a spectacular 43 points. Nicolas Katerelos had a performance of a lifetime by putting up 171 points and 6 TDs, also running around to pick up 56 rushing yards and 1 rushing TDs, all while throwing 0 INTs! However, after a performance like this, it causes me a moment of pause when they lose the next week against BULLS. I’ve been hot and cold on LA SECTE this season thinking they would come out strong, but finding them just falling short of the mark. At his point, I’m not sure if LA SECTE will be able to make it into the playoffs seeing as they have to win against MEAN MACHINES, NO PUNT INTENDED, and/or LES GRANDS CHUMS, if they want a shot at climbing out of the elimination zone!
- THE BULLS DID IT!!!! THEY GOT THEIR FIRST WIN! Congratulations team! Gabriel Wiseman had his best game of the season: Throwing 4 TDs, getting 4 Sacks, and completing 65% of his passes. Andrew Poitras also shone for his team and was the #1 target on offence, catching 6 of the 7 passes that went his way and being responsible for 3 TDs out of the 4 his team had! I’m happy that the BULLS got at least 1 win before the end of the season, because with their forfeit in week 6 and going against TONIX in week 10, they are limited in their chances for a win. I’m still hoping to see you all come back in the winter season in Co-Ed 3! Great job on not giving up and coming away with a big win!
- We have talked about TONIX getting their tie and losing out on their win streak. We talked about NO PUNT INTENDED having a close loss against LES GRANDS CHUMS. Now it’s time to visit KAMIKAZE, our last team in the division who has yet to lose! They did a fantastic job this past week against MEAN MACHINES after a last minute stop kept the MACHINES out of the endzone for the win. Rachel Shea continues to be the top targeted receiver and the receiver with the most TDs on the team, while Jean-Sebastien St-Arneault is steadily climbing and making a name for himself as the top rusher in Co-Ed 2! If they can keep their pace then I can see them going undefeated for the whole season! (Or at least until they face the TOTs in their final game 😀 )
- A Quick look at the Awards Race… Again:
- The QB race is heating up! When I last took a look at the QB spot, I had thought that Sanders might be able to overtake David Michaud with enough games. However, after 3 weeks Sanders has accumulated 29 total TDs, while David has been able to remain ahead with 32! Both teams have only played 2 games despite 3 weeks passing, so it seems that they are still maintaining their averages, but with TONIX having only 3 games left and NO PUNT INTENDED having 4, I’m starting to lean into the idea that Sanders Armand will eventually pass David in the last week or so… Neither of them can get complacent though! Alexandre Szalipszki has shot up the rankings and now sits at #3 with 28 Total TDs in 7 games. A bit under both of them, but not out of the running!
- The receiver race has been shaken up and stirred! Despite Mederic Lauzon maintaining his lead at the #1 spot with 9 TDs, Chazz Pisanelli has shot up on the rankings and now has 8 TDs in 5 games! This would put him on the path to the #1 spot in my book, especially if he can maintain his current pace! As much as I would like to call out all the receivers who have 8 or 7 TDs, one in particular stands out to me as having the best shot to compete at the top: Rachel Shea! Last I spoke about Rachel, she had 4 TDs and 112 yards in only 2 Games, but now has 7 TDs and 200 yards in 5 games (just behind Chazz Pisanelli who has 276 yards). These 3, in my opinion, are the top receivers of the division and have the best chance at finishing in the #1 spot! Good luck and don’t let up!
- On to defence: I know last time I looked at awards I separated rushers and defensive players. Unfortunately, that was only to highlight the rushers since there is no individual rusher award. As much as I love the work that Jean-Sebastien St-Arneault has been doing at the rusher position – 15 sacks in 5 games (ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS NUMBERS) – Xavier Parent and David Michaud have turned on the jets and are now doing everything they can to stay on top of the leaderboards! Xavier Parent is currently the leader with 11 INTs, 7 PDs, and 4 PICK-6s, but because MEAN MACHINES and TONIX don’t play each other during the season, I can’t think of a way to choose a clear winner! If David doesn’t win QB of the year, he better hope he can push Xavier Parent out of the way to ensure his defensive award, otherwise, I’d vote for him for 2-way player! Despite always wanting to give rushers awards, I don’t think it would matter if Jean-Sebastien St-Arneault got 20 sacks in the season, the performances of Xavier and David might ultimately give them the edge in this race…… unless he can maybe get 25+ sacks, or beat my record of 29!
.
Alright, let’s bounce back and see how my Power Rankings have changed in the past 4 weeks:
1) TONIX (Still #1, though that tie might put them on shaky ground!)
2) NO PUNT INTENDED (Their game this week should determine whether or not they jump to the #1 spot. However, some teams are beginning to outscore them and win games more decisively… Is there possible trouble brewing in paradise?)
3) KAMIKAZE (I have to put the last undefeated team here. Up from the #7 spot, what I consider an upset over MEAN MACHINES is doing wonders for this team)
4) MICHAEL SCOTTS TOTS (Despite our loss against ALWTA, which hurt my soul, we have won more games and allowed less points on defence! However, without one of the top 3 teams losing…. We might be stuck here)
5) WHO’S GONNA CARRY THE BOATS (Up from #8!!! Their tie against TONIX just hits me good, and was the deciding factor for putting them over some other teams!)
6) MEAN MACHINES (Down from #3 but not for a poor performance! A recent loss against KAMIKAZE hits them hard, especially when WGCTB got a tie against TONIX. They definitely have the ability to climb back up!)
7) LES RANCEURS (On a BIG win streak, LES RANCEURS break into the Power Rankings at #7 and show little sign of stopping)
8) AT LEAST WE TRIED AGAIN (Unfortunately, down to #8 from #4. They are definitely still a great team that deserves it’s spot in the Power Rankings, but have not been having as great of a performance as other up and coming teams)
Going to have to skip the Game break down this week as I’m a bit under the weather and running out of time! I’ll try to do a double dose next week!
