Peeze’s Playbook

By Paolo Della Rocca

Week 2

Man, we take life for granted.  This week was a hard one in the Peeze household.  On Wednesday I was alerted that my friend’s father had died.  He was 81 years old and died from complications related to Alzheimer’s disease.  This is a disease that claimed my own grandfather about a decade ago and one that my grandmother is battling at the moment.

Mt friend and I lost touch years ago.  No real reason for it other than that thing that happens in life where people spend their lives doing different things that ultimately don’t matter.  Growing up however, we were best friends, were in every class together and we hung out after school, before school whilst waiting for the school bus and on weekends.

Frank Sandiford, his father was an incredible man.  He was kind, generous, and one of the most intelligent people I’ve ever met.  He was a boxer when he was in his native Barbados. Even later in life, he was a phenomenal athlete.  He taught us what he knew about boxing, and baseball (two of his many passions).  He spoke proudly of my bad habit to pull every pitch (even if it was outside and really should have been punched to the opposite field).  He insisted “That’s good bat speed, the pitcher will never see it coming”.  At 67 years of age and some years ago, I ran into him on near my home where he told me he had biked to Pierrefonds and back.  It seemed to me like a remarkable feat but Frank insisted it was what he did every day.

Growing up the way we did, all of our parents worked long hours to give us the best opportunities.  Hearing he passed hurt me immensely because in the same way I was raised by my parents and grandparents I spent enough time in his household that Mr. Sandiford is in large part, responsible for the man I am today.  I pride myself on being a generous and honest person.  Frank Sanford was one of the many positive role models I had in my life and reinforced kindness and goodness at every turn.

Good bye Frank, in your later years I did not see you enough.  Thank you for all you’ve done for me.  I know in someways these words are being said far too late, but, I know you’re looking down on us and watching out as you always did.  Will, Antoinette, and Angelo your dad loved you very much.  Take pride in knowing that he touched the lives of more people than you will ever now.

Pack It Up, Pack It In, Let Me Begin

This is where I will start my review of the division before I “Jump Around” into other recaps.  Daniel Krebs was one of my picks for Quarterback of the Year before the season started.  Week 1 showed some rust on a guy who hasn’t flung the ball around in a little while.  After putting up a 62.1 QB rating in week 1, Krebs came out to shock the Farmers by outscoring them 22-0 in the first half.  Krebs connected on touchdown passes to Andrew April, Ryan Lefcourt and saw David Barth cross the goal line twice before the game was done.  To rub salt in the wound Daniel Krebs added a rushing touchdown as well.

It’s never a good sign when teams are looking for free agents slightly before game time.  Farmers entered the game with the roster that I feared they may have at the start of the season.  With no Corey Greenaway and no Jonathan Legault Farmer’s were an unrequited response on www.farmersonly.com. I put this loss square on the shoulders of Benoit Robidoux.  I understand that Greenaway missing has a huge impact on the defense.  However, Nicholas Belleau is a very capable replacement at reciver. Belleau only got 1 catch for 10 yards in this game.  Robidoux tends to spread the ball until the game becomes critical and that’s when he typically leans on Corey Greenaway.  However, this season, Robidoux needs to find a way to develop his game and make every receiver dangerous.  For the moment the Farmers found themselves on the short side of the hoe (it’s a tool look it up), in a 35-12 loss to the Pack.

The Devil is in the Details

After his first FPF start and win Clinkers quarterback Marc Andre Desaulniers was thinking that playing quarterback was easier than he thought.  He threw for 6 touchdowns in week one and Clinkers looked like an early favorite in Division 6.   Week 2 was a different story.  Facing off against a team that knows him well, the Diablos schemed well to take Luis Begin away.  This is something that Desaulniers will have to adapt to because the better teams in the division will work to take away the speedy receiver.  In the first half, Clinkers snapper Karl Jajnke caught 2 touchdowns on what would be his only two catches of the game.  The second half was a different story as forced passes to Luis Begin turned into 4 interceptions against Marc Andre Desaulniers who was nearly perfect in his first game.  Charles Verreault returned one of his two interceptions for a touchdown and it would ultimately be the difference Diablos would go on to win 19-18.

Michael “Sun” Deguire also had a very different second week.  However, in this case it was a better showing.  Deguire was intercepted by Karl Jankhe and Hugo Martel.  Still Deguire kept his team in the game and allowed his defense to cover him.  Both touchdown passes went to Francois Martin.  However, the defensive effort that allowed Charles Verreault, Alexandre Noel and Joseph Delapo to intercept passes really made the difference.  With pick sixes by both defenses and with both QBs having thrown 2 touchdowns, the one convert was the difference and in a matchup between two rookie quarterbacks Michael Deguire got the better of this matchup.

Pension Plan Hopeful on Retirement Plans

After a tough first game Hopeful Division 6 Champions (henceforth known as HD6C) looked to improve and even their record against a heavily favored Pension Plan.  Seth Galina immediately took a few strides as he looked to Corey Werner in open space and allowed him to use his space.  Werner scored and another unsung hero Benoit Dussault scored a second passing TD.  Seth Galina, the “Forgotten Hen” used his feat to buy time and gain yards.  He is a playmaker and should remember that this is a weapon he can use as well.  His running would account for a third score as Galina would record a third touchdown for HD6C.

Pension Plan came into this game and they wanted to slow the game down.  Vince Pisano knows that he is one of the more proficient passers in division 6.  Controlling the ball allows the other team to feel the pressure to make a play and he knows that they are more prone to make a mistake than he is.  This plan seemed to work to profession as this allowed the prepared retirees to play the game at their speed.  Antohny Siggis and Junior Spera accounted for 77% of the offense.  Teams in division 6 will come to learn of this dual headed monster if they haven’t already.

However, this game did go slightly off script as it gave Seth Galina a chance to win it on a Hail Mary.  The ball was thrown up and batted down by Robert Trombino.  The ball then twirled and ricocheted like a bad-luck pinball before landing in the chest of D6HC’s Daniel Marceux.  Marceux was then immediately tackled by Johnny Gianmarella who held the flag in his hand as both clock and plays went 0 and Pension Plan went on to secure the win in a game where they never trailed.  D6HC left hopeless after a 21-19 loss.

Division 6D

Krakens all but Floating Upside Down

Krakens were a team placed in 6D that we had very little information about.  While we know Anthony Beauchamp Frezza and we knew that he is immensely talented, we also knew that he could not throw in Division 6 due to the QB cap constraints.  With little knowledge about anyone else on the team and without knowing who would be throwing, Krackens were placed in Division 6.  At the moment they are 0-2 so this definitely appears to be a developing team.  However, the season is young and there is time to improve.

Conversly, while we at FPF were familiar with Anthony Beauchamp-Frezza we were fairly unfamiliar with Quackers and after winning 27-0, they are 2-0 and look like one of the best teams in Division 6D.  While Alexandre Croteau paced the Quackers D with the only interception of the day.  However, the Quackers D was stifling in a manner what is not fully represented on the stat sheet. They allowed only 78 passing yards and kept giving quarterback Franki Scalzaro good field position.  Julien St-Laurent and Karim Sy-Morissette repaid their quarterback’s confidence and the stellar defensive play in the form of 2 touchdowns a piece.  This game was all about lowered and raised expectations and for the moment it looks as though our pre-season expectations were entirely wrong.

Green Monster Casts a Shadow

Green Monster are not the most impressive team thus far.  This game served as an example that while this team must be fun and gritty, they have  a lot to do if we expect them to be a legitimate contender.  Jason De Souza completed exactly half of his attempts and he did score 3 touchdowns.  However, in a game where filed position served Green Monster and where Patrick Jauzon recorded 3 sacks, I expected more from this offense.  Billy Guay led the way with two touchdowns as Green Monster downed Sunday Touch Boys by a score of 20-18.

Dave Roaldi did his best to keep Sunday Touch Boys in the game.  While Mark Bellini led the team with an amazing 7 catch, 126 yard and 3 TD performance, it is a little concerning that either Roaldi looks to him too often or that no one else is ready to make a step toward being a reliable receiver.  This hasn’t necessarily been a trend for the Sunday Touch Boys but it is worth monitoring. Sundya Touch boys look to get back on track against an equally struggling Krakens in week 3.

Boys Not Broken After Severe Indigestion

Braw Sauce is one of those teams that looked as though they wanted to be taken seriously after their week1 win.  However, FPF is an evil mistress at times (is that saying no considered sexist? An evil supplicant? An evil matress?) .  William Plante is a question mark for me.  He’s one of Raw Sauce’s only veterans but the quarterback position is new to him. Other than a single 9 yard touchdown to Eric Labonte there seemed to be nothing much to the Raw Sauce offense. Alexis Pichette was another member of the Raw sauce offense with a single catch but his contribution on defense was clearly more significant as he intercepted a stray pass in this game.

Cameron Wilson has been known to turn the ball over often. However, he was very reliable and efficient in this game where he threw for 6 touchdowns (Evan Young being the chief beneficiary as he scored twice for the broke boys).  The Broke Boys defense matched the effort on display by their offense.  Thomas O’Neill recorded two interceptions including one that he took to the house.  Meanwhile, while Zachary Young had an excellent display of hands.

Power Rankings

Division 6

  1. Fighting Flamingos (1-0) (last week 2): It may be a little early to be crowning them but they have come out of the gate strong and more than just the record, they are surely passing the eye test.  Something I can’t claim to have done personally.  I still insist its big optometry keeping me down.
  2. The U (last week: unranked): In the first two weeks, the U have scored 30+ points and allowed no more than two scores.  Jeremy Rosenburg looked even better than Evan Frank in week 2.  I slept on the U early this season.  I won’t be fooled again.
  3. Pension Plan (2-0) (last week: 4): They aren’t the kind of team that blows their opponent out often but don’t take last week’s close victory to mean they were not dominant for the entire game.
  4. Vick in a Box (2-0) (last week: unranked): Putting up points in “Styles”.  There are teams I’d rather be facing this weekend.
  5. One Speed: Power (1-1) (last week: 3)– It isn’t panic time but a game marred with mistakes sees OSP’s record go down to .500. Nonetheless OSP is literally an inch away from being 2-0 as Will Power was open and overthrown to end the game.
  6. Los Banditos (1-1) (last week: 1): Francois Desrochers completed only 7 passes to his own team while kindly gifting 2 to Practice Squad.  The best defense in the division can’t help you if you can’t score.
  7. Farmers (1-0) (last week: 5):The commercial for Farmers insurance seems more certain of who the Farmers are.  At the moment we don’t know if Corey Greenaway will be a full time member of this team or not dum-tada-dum-dum-tum-dum (it works better as an auditory joke).
  8. The Pack (1-1) (last week: unranked): The rust seems to have been shaken off. We went into more detail about The Pack on this week’s podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhyEWkvUOgQ

Others Receiving Votes:

  • Tough Lungs (1-0) (last week: 8): how much lower can I move a team that didn’t play. Their in consideration for the same reason they were considered last week.
  • Channel 4 News Team (2-0) (last week): They’ve won both games by a combined 9 points. I don’t know enough about them to rank them in the elite 8 just yet.

Division 6D

  1. Air Force 1 (2-0) (last week: 1): I’ve been on the band wagon since their week 1 victory.  Nothing has since happened to dissuade me.
  2. Sick Bick: (2-0) (last week: 3): I had a chance to watch them play in person and I am impressed. They are a group of ball hawks who are always looking to make plays on defense.
  3. Ball so Hard U (10)- Joe “Buff” Buffone is leading a reliable, balanced attack for a team that we knew would be great on defense.
  4. Quackers (2-0) (last week: 5)Quackers shut out krakens and can truly prove themselves with tough games against Air Force 1 and Vultures over the next two weeks.
  5. A Determiner (2-0) (last week: 2): After shutting out Replacements in week 1, A Determiner beat Brewers 32-13.  They now have to deal with an injury to Phillipe Tremblay, we’ll see what impact that will have in the coming weeks.
  6. Vultures (1-1) (last week:4):  Vultures don’t slide down to far.  They lost by less than a score to who I believe to be the cream of the crop.
  7. Goat Depot (1-1) (last week: unranked): Mathieu Turcotte looked good against a struggling Baker Boys.  This isn’t a shocker but connecting with 3 receivers for 5 TDs is a positive sign.
  8. Green Monster (2-0) (last week unranked)- Green Monster, two weeks, two games that could have gone either way, two wins.  Don’t know if I’m sipping the Koolaid yet.  When I do make it Lemon-Lime, Kthanks!

  • Broke Boys (1-1): When Cameron Wilson doesn’t turn the ball over BB are competitive.  Two of his 6 touchdowns came on 40 bombs and it’s a positive sign for one of the more talented 6D rosters.

Predictions and Fallacies

Division 6 seemed to mystify me more than 6D as picked only 4 correct games in D6 while Brent Bodkin went 6-4.  Meanwhile, I went 6-4 predicting game sin D6D while Brent Bodkin went 5-5.  Feel free to torment him by tweeting him @Badnews51.
