A Post-dated Week 6 article
Hey FPF Community! First off, yeah, there’s been a bit of articles lacking, but let me explain. First, the Mid-season report card are, as I mentioned in mine, EXTREMELY long to write. I was able to get mine started a little earlier than anticipated which gave me an upper hand on Peeze and Lory. Peeze has since dropped his. Then, as for the regular weekly articles, with no games on Sunday the 9th and Monday the 10th way back in October, the week was real short with little games, so there wasn’t much to write about and we decided to let the writers finish their mid-season reports. Alright, but enough excuses, and more articles. This one is something I wrote 2 weeks back and got jammed with work and a GF coming in to visit. So here are my thoughts from 2 weeks ago, and don’t worry, I’ll have a more updated article by Saturday Nov. 5th.
Tierful Talking Points
- Tier 1
- Blessed is still undefeated. They’ve got 2 opponents left that will try and end their streak without a loss: #NR and Braves.
- Kangaroos, after suffering their first loss of the season, came back firing on all cylinders both offensively and defensively. Defensively, they stopped STL 3 drives in a row on 4th down and took advantage of those turnover on downs to punch in 3 scores and three XP2 converts. In the blink of an eye, the score was 24-0 and ended up dropped 49 against STL.
- KGP seems to have the style play that just works against the Braves as they beat them for the 2nd time this season. In that game, Phil Cutler was NASTY on Wednesday night, going 28/32 for 257 yards and 8 TDs, 0 INTs. Can you believe this isn’t a perfect Quarterback rating of 156.3? That’s it, the NFL QBR formula is just wrong. Those stats are the definition of a perfect passer rating.
- STL are now in the single elimination playoff bracket, just 1 point behind KGP. The 2 teams do face off in the last week of the season, and it might just determine who is double-elimination or single-elimination.
- Both #NR and EZW picked up their first win of the season. #NR did it against the aforementioned STL while EZW was able to get the better of KGP for win #1.
- William Power leads Tier 1 with 5 INTs, is Top 6 in sacks with 2, and is Top 10 in tackles with 16. He’s likely your DPOY if the season ended today.
- Tier 2
- Kiss my Outlaws are still undefeated… what’s new 🙄
- Beer Belly Brigade got a lowkey important win against Friends Without Danny to stay as a double elimination team. Alexandre Fafard and David Enault lead their team to victory, along with the XP converts and the safety play for 2 points.
- Oh no… Team Ethnik had a meltdown in their game against Sweat & Beers. They let a 2-possession lead evaporate with 3 plays remaining left AND possession of the ball. Down 13 points with the ball in the redzone, Quaysie Gordon-Maule picked off Joey Taylor and returned it for a touchdown (which was the only way Sweat & Beers could come back in that game). They then converted the onside kick for 25 yards + a 10-yard penalty, and on the ;last play of the game, from 10 yards out, Andrew Denis Lynch caught the game-tying TD. They couldn’t convert on the XP and came away with the tie, but S&B can thank the onside kick for that tie!
- Sweat & Beers didn’t have as much luck against Adam Sinagra and the Blackouts as they shut them down to only 12 points as Blackouts, at 5-1 have solidified themselves as strong contenders to be in the Tier 2 final.
- James Drysdale is starting to run away with the OPOY award, leading Tier 2 in yards (534) and with a whopping 18 TDs in 5 games.
- Speaking of awards, Phil Pharand is your leading candidate for 2-way player of the year. He’s also caught 9 points worth of extra points, the most in Tier 2.
- Stephen Harripersaud still hasn’t thrown a pick in 6 games played this year. Incredible!
- Nicholas Fon and Andrew Denis Lynch have combined for 9 sacks for Sweat & Beers, the most for any team in Tier 2
- Tier 3:
- We now have 2 undefeated teams remaining: Bruins and Kiss My Inlaws. Oh and look at that, these 2 team play this Sunday. Who ya got in this one Tier 3??
- Dime and Bougie have that offense rolling. 237 points in 6 games.. They are AVERAGING 39.5 points per game. DAMN! That’s way ahead of anyone else, and no, Bruins aren’t actually close because they were spotted a 60-0 forfeit win for the points for in Week 1.
- And our winless teams are down to 2: Threat Level Midnight and Why So Serious?
- Trapstars finally got on the board, but did it against an Arouch team that was without Eric Lalonde at QB. Still, they needed the win, if not for a chance at being a double elimination team, to at least instill some confidence in the team heading into the playoffs.
- Voodoo down at halftime to Lallimo’s made a comeback to get the W and move to an impressive 5-1.
- Olivier Sabourin seems to have figured it out FPF’s flag game fairly quickly after being manhandled by Arouch. Since that goose-egg performance, he’s put up 33 and 41 points and has come away with a 1-1 record. Note: They lost the game where they put up 41 😦
- I’ve never seen 1 RECEIVER have over 145 rushing yards in a season. Felix Boutet can claim that title, as he’s rushed 20 times already for 147 yards and 1 TD.
- Vincent Benjamin has the most points off converts (8). All 8 points are from 2-point conversions (4x). Mathieu Houle and Adam Rabinovitch are T-2nd with 7 points (all 1-point converts for Houle, five 1-point converts and one 2-point convert for Rabinovitch).
- Tier 4:
- Deep Ballz are improving with each passing week and are now tied at 2-4 with Red Dragons for the last double-elimination spot, but Red Dragons do have the tie-breaker with their Week 1 victory over Deep Ballz.
- This was talked about on CTA this past week, but TuneSquad are crumbling with 4 losses in a row. They’ve got a tough matchup against Save The Turftles where they should play loosy goosy and play without stress, while their game against Red Dragons, the last before their playoff run, they would (obviously) want to go in feeling more confident with a win.
- The talent of Primetime is there. They need to calm things down when the game gets emotional and start playing smarter. Case in point? This past week your up 6 points with 5 plays remaining in the game, with your opponent’s starting QB on the sideline because of an OC penalty and down to 5 guys. After sacking them on the first play of the drive to be 2nd and 14 on their own 1, you gotta be aware of their best player in Nic Fon and double-team him, or play him with 1 guy in man coverage, while the rest of your team is in a zone. What you can’t do is let him get a 49-yard touchdown to tie the game.
- The Penetrators have a target on their back, where teams are giving their best for a chance to beat them and offer them their first loss of the season. I know it’s easier said than done, but once a ref makes a call, it’s VERY unlikely they overturn it, unless the other ref comes down to overrule them (and depending on where the play was, the 2nd ref may not be able to overturn it, if, for example, it’s a sideline step out of bounds and the 2nd ref is on the other side of the field). In Justin Goodman‘s case, it was clear the ref was not going to change their mind, and he needs to keep his cool. The play I’m referring to is an INT from Goodman that wasn’t actually an interception. The ball (from my angle on the sideline) fairly clearly touched the ground before the defender got their hands under it. Hard to say how I react myself in a tight game (probably pretty pissed too in the moment), but what you can’t do is keep badgering and bringing it up quite loudly (even if it was to his own teammates) to then get called for an OC penalty. He’s too important to be sent out for 10 plays, as he saw just a few minutes later. The team needed him to lead an important drive and he was on the sideline unable to help. Not only that, they were limited in the game to the bare minimum of 6 players and were forced to play with 5 with him kicked off for 10 plays. He’s a smart guy and that’s how we all learn the small intricacies of the game. He will definitely think twice what the game situation is before making additional comments.
- Also mentioned on CTA, The Step Bros offense has come alive in the past 2 weeks, with them putting up 32 and 25 in their last 2 games. That’s 57 points in 2 games where has in their first 4 games they had a combined 58. Have they figured it out? Or was it a 2-game anomaly. Keep tuning into the FPF season to find out.
- QB Roulette were close to getting their first win on the season, losing on the last play of the game to Deep Ballz, 26-25.
- What a rookie season Vincent Cheung is having. If he could hit 40 TDs in 8 games, that would be hella impressive.
- It was slightly talked about on CTA, but Ethan Adrian is FAST. He now leads Tier 4 with 15 sacks in 6 games (and has batted down 6 passes too). He’s in contention for Defensive Player of the Year.
- Co-Ed:
- The Co-Ed Tier is starting to take shape, with clear top teams with 0 and 1 loss and clear bottom teams with 0 and 1 win. But what’s to make from the middle teams like KMEZ, Free Smoke, Melting Potes and Les Petits Phoques? Funny enough 2 of those teams are double-elimination teams (KMEZ and Free Smoke) while the other 2 are single elimination teams.
- While Paolo Della Rocca has thrown the 2nd most INTs (11) , he does lead the entire Tier with 1240 passing yards and is 3rd in passing TDs with 26.
- Carl Murray (Melting Potes) leads the Tier with 6 INTs and T-2nd with 6 passed batted down.
- Marilou Côté Noël (Fast Not Furious) has the 2nd most sacks (6) so far in 4 games.
- Marvin Steinberg (Fast Not Furious) is your TD leader with 9 in 5 games.
- Women’s:
- So in Game 1 of BRUTES vs. Vortex, Vortex won 18-12, but only by putting up 18. This time around they lost 33-13. So in 2 games, they only put up 31 points, and give credit to that strong BRUTES defense. Maude Lacasse and Laurence Pontbriand connected for 6 receptions in both games. The difference? The found the endzone more often. Game 1 Pontbriand had 79 yards and 1 TD while in Game 2 she had 90 yards and 4 TDs!
- The Louves du Nord got their 2nd win of the season, as they have now beaten the Loups du Nord twice. Mélissa-Anne Xavier and Jessica Garcia-Lopez got 1 TD each to help their team get the victory.
- The last time Red Nation played BRUTES, their defense made it competitive, but the offense struggled to score, losing 13-0. Can the offense put it together and can the defense still stop this military-like BRUTES offense?
Game Recap – Tier 2
Game Changers vs. Kiss My Outlaws
The game didn’t start well for Anton Sakiz and Game Changers, as he was picked off on the first play of the game by Luis Begin. Right from that moment, I said to myself that KMO had already won the game. 1 stop on defense is all you need to give Stephen Harripersaud to go out there and win a game with the guys Alexi Dubois has surrounded him with. 4 plays later, and Sanders Armand got the first of his 2 touchdowns on the night. He also had a highlight one handed grab that was thrown behind him on a hard post that he managed to scoop in, contorting his body to reach back as he was cutting to the middle of the field.
That said, Sakiz did drive his team down the field, mostly through snapper Anthony Nguyen until Salim Cherkaoui who looked like a bit of a ringer out there, held on to the ball with STRONG hands on the quick out route as Alexi Dubois gave 3 swats at the ball which remained immovable in Cherkaoui hands. He then proceeded to jump a foot over everyone and snag one out of the air for the 2-point convert and tie the game at 8.
When one drive for KMO led to a 4th-and-1 situation where Harripersaud couldn’t connect with Phil Pharand, suddenly the game was back within reach for Game Changers…. until, the next pass was almost picked off by Alexi Dubois, catching the team running all hooks, and then the very next pass was ultimately picked off by Sanders Armand. While the first play with the ball back, Harripersaud was sacked by Armand Balla, there would be some contention between the two later on in the game. With Sanders gaining 27 yards on the next play and snapper Jafar Hassan capping the drive off with a 4-yard score, KMO went up 14-8.
After the first 2 passes of the drive fell incomplete, Sakiz was starting to feel the pressure on 3rd down but was bailed out by Louis-Philippe Paquette for a 20-yard first down gain that got the ball rolling. With 5 plays remaining, I wondered whether the defense, and this might seem crazy to some of you, but if the defense would let Game Changers score on the next play. That would give S.H 4 plays to drive the field for a score. Instead, Paquette got 14 yards for another first downwhich left 6 more yards for Anthony Nguyen to get his first and only TD on the night. This left Steve 3 plays, which Luis Begin got them to half field in just 1 play over the middle of the field, and Phil Pharand added another 9, but the Game Changers D got a big stop to prevent KMO from taking the lead at the half (and the ball to start the 2nd half).
In the 2nd half, Kiss My Outlaws started to run away with it by a few factors. First, they scored at will, including Phil Pharand from 12 yards out on the opening drive of the 2nd half, which included a call for the onside kick, which bring up point #2. Game Changers did a really bad job of picking up the 2nd quarterback on drop-back plays, which led KMO converting the onside kick. The VERY next play? Sanders‘ 2nd TD of the game. 3rd reason? Continued turnovers from the KMO defense. The VERY next play after the successful 2-point convert? A Marvin Steinberg interception. 4th reason? Armand Balla was getting close to contacting Steve on several rushing attempts, until on one play he jumped so high, had no control of his body on his way down and pancake-sacked Steve for, not Contacting the passer, but ROUGHING the passer, which is a 10-yard penalty with 10 plays off from the game. Ref Leo Gervais had given both Balla and Meril Banz Christanis to control their body when rushing Steve and after the first warning, called it roughing the passer. After more scores and defensive INTs from KMO and with Balla back in the game, he did get a 40-yard bomb TD and let the KMO bench know about it.
That’s as close as Game Changers could get as Marvin Steinberg picked up the first down to end the game.
