A Major Shake up in Co-Ed Rules for 2024, The Race for A Double Elim Spot and QB of the Year Wrapped Up?

Okay! We’re back on track with the more standard version of the articles after the report cards brought us to the mid-way point of the season. But first, some major shake up news in the Co-Ed world, starting in Winter 2024!

Currently, the rule for Co-Ed is that a team cannot field more than 4 male players, meaning that a normal lineup is usually 4 males and 2 females. This has been the rule since FPF first introduced and offered a Co-Ed division, back in 2017. Think about the state of flag football 6 years ago, and the FPF community. Obviously there were girls playing then, but if I had to make an educated guess, there were less female (and male) players back then as compared to today. With the explosion of awareness, participation and talent, the FPF rules committee felt like it was a perfect time to change the rule for Winter 2024 so that the rule is that a team cannot field more than 3 male players, basically meaning that usually/most of the times, it will be 3 males and 3 females. The Co-Ed game has, for the most part, been advantageous to teams that have great female players on their teams. You could have great male players, but teams that think to be male-heavy and want to man-up constantly would lose the matchups against a team that had strong females. The Rules Committee felt, and I agree, that after the growth seen in Co-Ed after 5 years, that it was time to move towards 3 males (max) and 3 females on the field at once, once again putting an emphasis on the female talent out there. And C’mon its 2023! Time for a true 50/50 equality split in terms of the gender ratio on the field!

Alright, back to the Fall Cup coverage. There’s been a ton of games that bring many teams up to 6 and even 7 games played, so there’s ton to cover, so let’s get a good pulse of what’s going on in each division.

What’s Good in the Women’s Division

  • BRUTES took Game 1 of their back-to-back games vs Vortex in convincing fashion, 45-13; Maude Lacasse is on a rampage this season and is making sure that nothing stands in her way of an FPF Championship. 24 or 32 for 241 yards, 6 TDs and 1 INT to a very talented Vortex team is in and of itself, making a statement. Virginie Roussel made her statement loud and clear, that she was going to DOMINATE, and that she did, snatching 12 of her 13 targets for 142 yards and not one, not two, not three, not four, BUT FIVE Touchdowns. Sabrina Gervais continued her brilliant season with another 3 INTs, one of which she took back to the house for 6.
  • After starting the season 0-2-1, Wolfpack are now sitting in 3rd place, having gone 3-1 in their last 4. Maryse Paquette, Carrie-Ann Auger, and Camille Dumas have led the way en-route to their 3 victories in 4 games. Paquette has contributed with 32 catches, 315 yards, 4 TDs and 4 INTs in 3 of those games. Auger had a monster game against Red Bulls, finishing with 12 receptions, 126 yards and a score, while Dumas completed 68% of her passes for 710 yards, 11 TDs, 2 INTs (Thrown) and has one interception herself on D in the past 4 games.

  • The last time Red Nation won a game was Sept 24th, though the last time they played on the pitch was October 1st, so hopefully they took the time to rest any nagging injuries and are ready for 2 big games to keep them in the double-elimination bracket.
  • QB of the year already wrapped up? This one isn’t even close. Maude Lacasse has 45 TD’s to a division-low 3 INTs. To put the TD’s in perspective, no other QB in the Women’s division has even hit 20 TD’s on the season.
  • The last time I wrote about the Wildcats, they were 0-4 and looking to turn their season around, and that’s exactly what they’ve done. They’ve now won 3 in a row, beating Wolfpack, X&X, and Red Bulls to put themselves in a position to beat Red Nation and maybe squeak into the double-elimination side of the bracket.
  • X&X will be looking to get their 2nd victory in their last game of the season again Red Bulls, the team they beat to get their own win of the season so far. Either way the game goes, they will be a single-elimination team, but might as well go into the playoffs with some confidence and get more reps for Maya Di Fazio.
  • It’s nice to see other players that are not on Vortex and BRUTES leading the division in receiving yards; Maryse Paquette and Geraldine “GG” Cabillo-Abante are your #1 and #2 top receivers in yards with 605 and 554 respectively.
  • For themselves, Red Bulls are also looking for some confidence going against X&X to wrap up their season. They need a victory to avoid going 0-8 into the knockout round. Or will their 1st victory come in the playoffs? 👀

Iggy’s News and Notes in CE2

  • Y&Y is atop the standings and have clinched the #1 seed. They will have home field advantage throughout the entire knockout round!
  • I love that the 2 rushers with the most sacks are females. Both Jessica Bositampen (Subzero) and Jenna Araujo (Who’s Gonna Carry the Boats) have 8 sacks, the most in Co-Ed2.
  • Balls Deep have lost 2 of their last 3 games, with losses to At Least We Tried and the aforementioned Y&Y. I like the team, but are showing losses to more experienced teams.
  • Kiss My Christmas Balls are in a similar position to Balls Deep. Both teams were 4-0 at one point and KMCB have now lost 2 straight. There’s room for improvement for the team if they want to go to the Finals.
  • Subzero will look to close out the regular season with a win against WYD Step Bro’s. If they do, that will be their best shot at getting one of the last double-elim spots, as they will be keeping a close eye on the Predators right behind them.
  • Could Néstor Chávez Fayad win QB of the year? It’s would be an untraditional path, but he is leading the league in yards (1,474 rushing and passing combined) and TD’s (35 rushing and passing combined)
  • At Least We Tried haven’t lost a game since way back on Sept 13th. Since then, they have gone 3-0-1 and can finish as high as the #2 seed if they win their remaining 2 games.
  • TIGRES play a high-flying, fast-paced offense and have now proven they can score points. The question with the team will be on their defense. Can they get enough stops on D to stop offenses, and then will they slow their offensive game down once they have the lead? I’m curious to see how this team adapts their style of play when they are leading vs. trailing in a game. Their practice and chemistry has led to a good enough offense to propel them in the double-elimination bracket for now, sitting in the 5th seed.
  • Who’s Gonna Carry the Boats got a HUGE victory over Kiss My Christmas Balls, one that will surely boost their confidence moving forward. The only issue? That confidence booster needs to last 12 days, as they next play on Oct 23rd against Free Agents No More. So… Who’s Gonna Carry the Boats? A weekly question I will be answering. I think it’s Kayla Gauthier, but not ready to fully commit just yet.
  • Shelder Valéry, with his 6 INTs, 2 PDs and 2 Pick 6’s has a step over Shanton Smith and Maya Di Fazio for DPOY, with the 12 points he’s added to the scoreboard a major reason why.
  • WYD Step Bro’s are in the middle of a month-long break. They need to come back in November with a strong showing against Free Agents. Is Pranav Sharma taking a look at his playbook and shuffling things up? We’ll have to see on November 4th.
  • In a battle of Free Agents vs. Free Agents No More, the real Free Agents stood up, though the QB play was not exceptional. There were a combined 15 completions between the two Quarterbacks and neither hit 100 passing yards. They did more of their damage on the ground and if you take their rushing yards as receiving yards, they both led their teams as the WR1, with Lemonde being a bit more effective with 29 more rushing yards and 2 rushing TDs.
  • Eric Letourneau of Free Agents is the leading candidate for receiver of the year so far to this point. It’s his to lose!
  • Wondering whether Ballhard University take time in their long break to review what’s been working and what hasn’t offensively and revamp or even cutdown their playbook if its too large.
  • When will Free Agents No More get their first victory? vs. WGCTB? vs. At Least We Tried? I don’t see them beating either team and finish the regular season with 1 point. More important than the wins though, since they will be stuck in the single-elimination bracket, will be to improve their offensive efficiency and drive the field consistently. It’s time to strip the playbook down to 4-5 plays and run them enough so the reads are reinforced and QB-receiver timing is established.
  • Week 8 is very light in schedule. We’ve got 1 matchup: WGCTB against Free Agents No More. With the win, WGCTB would (for now) slide into the final double-elimination spot as the 6th ranked team in the standings. A loss or tie does them no good, so they should keep that in mind if they score a TD on the final play of the game and are still down 1 point.
  • 4 teams have 10+ Interceptions: At Least We Tried (11), WYD Step Bro’s (13), Ballhard University (10), Y&Y (17).
  • 5 teams have 10+ sacks: Balls Deep (11), At Least We Tried (10), Kiss My Christmas Balls (11), Who’s Gonna Carry the Boats (12) and Subzero (11). Keep balling out defenses!!

Iggy’s Thoughts on Co-Ed 1

  • I love the intimacy between all the teams in Co-Ed1. All the teams will play against each other, and there are 2 teams that are faced a 2nd time. Already the teams are familiar with each other, but I find this increases the rivalries even more, especially in that 2nd game. Teams that lost the first game are often coming in hot in that second game, wanting revenge from their first-game loss.
  • Case-in-point, Plenty of Fish, on the field, played a great comeback game against Kiss My End Zone and were fired up with a last-play stop at the 1-yard line to win the game on a sack by Julian McLaren-Thompson after a bad snap that forced me to turn around and take my eyes away from reading the D. The sack was actually a huge play, since the sack put KMEZ on POF’s 10-yard line, otherwise, POF would have had to take the snap on their own 1 and perhaps the bad memories of their playoff loss to EZFun would have crept into their minds. For those who don’t remember, the game scenario was much the same. After 4 stops in the redzone from the 1-yard line, with 1 play remaining, up by 1 point, the snap sailed out the back of the endzone, ending the game in a safety and a 1-point playoff loss to EZFun. All to say that the sack avoided them from taking that final snap this time around!
  • Ben McMahon is your Passing TD leader with 30 on the season.
  • EZFun were the team that was undefeated for the longest, going 4-0-1 through 5 games, but have dropped their last 2 games, to Plenty of Fish and KMEZ. Because of the great start to the season though, a win in their final game against Deep Ballz on Nov 1st means they can finish as high as 2nd and as low as the 3 seed.
  • With the lingering, small injury to Jeanslee Alexis, The IG Team have gone 1-1-1 in their last 3. They have 2 more games to get their mojo back and start looking like the 2-time championship team that they are.
  • Shoutout the Receivers with a Passing TD on the season: Victor Rifiorati (Deep Ballz- 1 TD), Jerry Beauboeuf (The IG Team – 1 TD), Seth Galina (Plenty of Fish – 1 TD), Manu Allard-Roy (Vultures – 1 TD).
  • Vultures are that interesting team, currently sitting in the 5 seed, that can do some damage come the knockout round. With a win against IG Team, that would be their 2nd win against them, and it would give them a chance to end up as the #4 seed as a double-elim team.
  • Your top 2 defensive leaders in INTs both come from The IG Team, with Jeanslee Alexis at #1 with 6 and Jordanson Alexis at #2 with 4.
  • Fitsquad, while sitting at 2-4, have at least shown signs of competing and being in games, which wasn’t the case in the first 3 games. They are 2-1 in their last 3, but have 2 tough matchups coming up in The IG Team and POF. Again, at least the offense is moving the ball and putting up points, just in time for the knockout round. Let’s see what they can do in their final 2 games.
  • Marvin Steinberg making a strong case for himself for the Receiver of the Year award with the most receiving yards (436), 2nd in receptions with 31, catching 72% of the passes thrown his way and tied for 2nd with Manu Allard-Roy with 10 TDs.
  • The aforementioned Julian McLaren-Thompson is making a statement as the best rusher in the division, as he leads CE1 with 10 sacks.
  • Deep Ballz played a few competitive games against POF, Fitsquad and The IG Team, but ultimately went 0-3 in those games. What’s impressive is keeping the first 2 teams to 25 and 26 points when both are capable of putting up 35+ points.
  • 3 players for KMEZ have the most 2 point converts: Amélie Durocher (3), Justin Gauthier (2) and Erica Dubois (2).

Co-Ed 1 Fantasy Team of the Week (Week 3)
