A look ahead at Week 10
Oh D4 how I missed you. You’re like that girlfriend that skips town for the weekend and comes back on a Sunday afternoon to “surprise” you and you had other plans so you get in a brief fight and you’re stuck cooking dinner to make up for it.
Wait, this has nothing to do with FPF… why am I describing Eagle’s failed love life? I need to get my stories straight.
Anyways, many of you heard the news either from my post on Facebook, my French article or simply others talking; I took over the English article and I’ll be the sole writer for D4 for whatever’s left of the season.
If you hate my style of writing, I feel sorry for you; you are stuck with me now.
I will only do this kind of introduction once as I hate repeating myself.
If you’ve read my French article (which I highly suggest), you’ll know that this article will only include a look at what’s coming ahead and not what happened in the previous week. The French version will resume what happened while the English one will look at the following week and what’s to come in this great world that is FlagPlus Football.
This week only, I’ve included the playoff picture in both my articles because I know some of you may refuse to read in French for some reasons, but I will not be doing that every week; I don’t feel the need to just fill space.
The recap and playoff picture of what D4 looks like and would look like for the playoffs will be included in my French article every week (its numbers people. Even if your French is horrible, you can still look at a table and see numbers)
I’ve decided not to add a random segment to my Saturday articles to make sure, one, I release them early enough and, two that I don’t drift off the important topic. You guys want a short, light read before your games on Saturdays anyways. No time for all this none-sense.
Also, we’ve come to the conclusion that we all live in Quebec and everyone has a level of French that is decent enough to understand half the things I write. Otherwise, Google translation is now your new BFF for the next few weeks.
Enough with these silly introductions that no one reads anyways!
Week 10
There are many great games on the docket this week and I’m really excited for a few of them. This week has many teams going head to head with their divisional rival for the bye week and I’ll try to cover most of them so people know what’s up and what’s not.
Here are a few things to watch for this week:
- ZOO enters a period of must-wins if they want to have a seat in the playoffs. Don’t disappoint Moe Khan boys, he’s been rooting since Day 1.
- Les Affreux are most likely out of the playoffs, but a switch at QB (which is official now) could give them hope for Spring !
- Coyotes vs Crisp will be an amazing game. Winner wins division and gets bye-week. I’m really stoked for this one; Coyotes have been playing great as of late and Crisp aren’t as hot as they once were. We could have an upset !
- Somehow, The Dans could still win the division (these 2 ties are really hurting them) if they win-out and Grip n Rip loses both games. I doubt they’ll lose both, but hey, it’s possible !
- In a world where anything can happen, Backyard Bullies facing off Show me your TDs could have serious playoff repercussions. Not only will it be a great game, but it could lead to a bye-week !
- With Recipe 4 Disaster on their tail, CREAM Team could clutch division with a win this week over Bruthers. I expect them to.
- I mentioned it earlier this week, Shmoney’s time is now. Unless they lose a game, the bye-week is theirs. With two tough matchups, they’ll have to impress us at least once and bring it home.
- I kinda like how Whisperers are facing off against Ghosts. Nothing to do with football here, really.
- 6Fast’s tie renders the whole head-to-head with 69ers kind of useless. I doubt they’ll drop a game, so I expect them to get the bye, but 69ers are RIGHT THERE at their heels. A bad game could have them 5th seed when week 12 comes.
- I just got news from the BMS Goats / CREAM Team incident. First of all, this is ridiculous. We don’t live in a movie. Why the heck would you do that Lazzara? Second, jumping the already hit guy when you’re on the bench is clearly excessive. Get a hold of yourselves guys. All that after receiving words from the Commish in his last email; a serious letdown. All that being said, Lazzara is THE player on both his teams and could face suspension; a real deal-breaker. This has HUGE playoff implications.
- My Game of the Week and the one I’d vote for if it comes down to who gets filmed: Maloudes vs Game Changers. Friends, ex-teammates, facing off in a classic game of FlagPlus Football. Not only is this two of the best teams in the division, but their play style match efficiently. To add to the hype, they will be battling out for the bye-week. Winner gets it. This is great.
Playoff Picture
As mentionned in my Thursdays article, here’s the playoff picture.
**Stars next to team’s name : Clinched playoff berth
**Ruled-out : Mathematically ruled-out of the playoffs.
**Name in bold : Clinched division.

Playoff Details
Conference A
A quick overview of Conference A has us thinking it’s pretty set in stone, which isn’t quite the case. Sure, the top 6 teams have clinched, but there’s still very possible movement for the bye-weeks and many of the bottom few could sneak in. Week 10 will determine much of the playoff picture.
-
Coyotes : Coyotes have been playing excellent football as of late and I really like the moment they have going right now. With the divisional title on the line this week against Crisp, a win would render Week 11 pointless. I expect Coyotes to come in guns blazing and give it everything they’ve got. With two straight losses, Coyotes could fall all the way to 9th, so let’s not allow that to happen.
-
6Fast Guys Plus Ryan : The loss over 69ers is taking a toll, but their tie is setting the boat straight for them. I expect them to win out and maintain the divisional bye. A single loss COULD have 69ers jump ahead, but they’d maintain strong seeding in the wild-cards. 6Fast are smart and strong enough to finish this season on a high note going into the playoffs. With easier opponents in their final two weeks, there’s no way they are blowing this one.
-
Shmoney : With ZOO in the rear-view mirror, Shmoney really needs to step it up this week and take matter in their own hands. I really like where they are sitting and a single way in the next two weeks will guarantee a divisional title. Let’s seize it.
-
CREAM Team : CREAM Team is currently ahead in their division, but the incident that occurred last week could have their team in jeopardy for the following few weeks. We’ll know more in a few days, but right now CREAM Team needs to focus on what’s really important; winning and maintaining the higher seed.
-
Crisp : The table is set for Crisp. Final game of the season, the one that matters the most. A win over Coyotes has them setting off into the sunset with a bye-week, a loss this week could have them drop to 9th seed if things don’t go their way. With the talent this team has behind Morsink’s arm, they could really get a momemtum going before it’s too late.
-
69ers : Ironically, their faith lies in the hands of the team they have defeated a few weeks ago. If 6Fast doesn’t lose a game, 69ers will have a strong seed in the playoffs. Otherwise, they could go up and clinch division if they win-out. 69ers have been an early favorite and they’ve played like it. They’ve clinched a playoff berth and are playing for seeding right now. They got a tricky week 11’s matchup, but this team is so much more than they show.
-
Recipe 4 Disaster : With their faith in their own hands, Recipe 4 Disaster is looking pretty good right now. They’d need CREAM Team to lose both games with them winning both (since CREAM Team has the head-to-head over R4D) to clinch the bye-week, which isn’t improbable, but a single win will have them clinch a playoff berth. This offense is tricky enough that they’ll sneak in one before the season’s end.
-
Ghosts : The ups and downs of Ghosts has me seriously worried about what they can really do come playoff time. I’m not worried they’ll clinch either this week against a softer target in Whisperers since all they need is a win to put that pressure away, but the divisional title is a bit far-fetched. Ghosts will have to clean up their act if they want to make a push in the playoffs once again; they can’t afford the ups and downs they’ve been experiencing as of late.
-
Punt Returners : I expected them to win their division, but they’ve been spiraling. Seating far from CREAM Team, they’d need them to lose out and Punt Returners to win every game with Recipe 4 Disaster losing one out of two. Improbable, but they should clinch by week’s end with a win. It’s Punt Returners time to shake the rust off and go back to their glory days of a month ago; they can’t go into the playoffs on a slump.
-
Team Ethnik : Sitting 10th at the moment has them in a decent spot. Team Ethnik has been playing a lot better recently and a win next week’s would render week 11’s game a lot less important than it could be. Seize the moment and clinch before it’s too late.
-
TrapStars : Talk about falling off the wagon. Sitting 11th is a disappointment for TrapStars, but they aren’t done just yet. With a decent gap ahead of the pack, they just need to win one of the two remaining games to clinch. Otherwise, they’d need help from many other teams to survive.
-
ZOO : Moe Khan’s bandwagon team is sitting 12th this week. ZOO is more alive than we’d think at first glance. They’ve come back from their slump and are playing like we expected them to. A win this week will have them propelled into the playoff thanks to their divisional record. Things are looking up for ZOO; go get it.
-
Ball Busters : Technically on the outside looking in, Ball Busters need to win to make it in. A single win will put their faith in their opponents’ hands so this is the time where you NEED to win out and force your way in.
-
Les Duck Dynasty : I’ve mentioned it a few times already, this team puzzles me. They’ve started off 0-5 and they aren’t giving themselves a decent shot at this, but they aren’t dead just yet. If they can manage to win out the rest of the way there, LDD could see themselves low-seeded in the playoffs. I do see this happening.
-
BMS Goats : With only one game left on their schedule, BMS Goats can’t afford to drop this one. If they do, they are out. Even with a win, they’d need TrapStars and ZOO to lose out and a little bit a magic from LDD and Ball Busters. This is a pretty tough scenario. Knowing two of their players could face suspension, this must-win just got a lot tougher.
-
SouthSide Ballers : They added a QB to their team a tad late, but it wasn’t too late. Losing two very close games has hurt them tremendously recently and they are sitting at a tough spot. They need to win out to stay alive and a bit of luck. Sadly, their faith isn’t entirely in their own hands and we’ll see how things play out this week.
-
Black Ice : In a similar scenario with SouthSide Ballers, Black Ice are in a tough spot. They started off 2-0 and lost the following 6. They need to win out to stay alive otherwise they’re going home week 12.
-
Local 89ers : This has been a tough season for Local 89ers. They started off slow, found a decent rhythm and got going, but hit a slump right after and couldn’t get back up on that horse. With only two weeks left in their season, Local 89ers should take the time to enjoy the final games and maybe try something new if they plan on coming back in spring with a new game plan!
-
TCO : This season is a real disappointment for the previous Div D champions. Granted, this is a quarterback-driven league and their QB is now playing for another team, but this defense is a lot better than what they’ve showed us. Although their playoff hopes are dead and gone, the season isn’t over and they can still enjoy 2 more games of FPF before the end. Let’s shock the world and crush dreams.
-
Justice League : Although Justice League had a pretty tough season, they can still enjoy two more weeks before it’s all over. Mathematically out of the playoffs, they can still fight for their first win. They’ve improved over the last 8 weeks and they can still make it happen before the season’s end.
Conference B
Very similarly to Conference A, things are looking pretty set. Shamrocks have clinched division, congratulations. Although Eskimo Brothers and Les Affreux aren’t mathematically out, a single win from most teams will knock them out regardless of their results. Most teams are playing for byes this week and a shot at a berth.
-
Maloudes : They have clinched playoff berth; congratulations. This week, they are fighting to clinch the divisional titles over friends and the bye week. Week 11 won’t really matter; if they win this week, they clinch bye-week and week 11 is irrelevant, if they lose, it could be seeding.
-
Grip n Rip : With the Dans on their tail for the divisional title, it’s almost set in stone. A single win (whether this week or the next) could have them clinch. If they lose both, they’ll need the Dans to lose one of the two, otherwise they could fall all the way to 7th seed!
-
Shamrocks : The first team to clinch the divisional title and the bye-week. Congratulations are in order. They are, from now on, playing for seeding within the top 4. I don’t expect Shamrocks to go easy on their opponents, but maybe they’ll try a few tricks before the end of the season. This could be confidence booster and the kind of momemtum they’ll need to push far into the playoffs; let’s not sleep on it guys!
-
Marco in the Middle : Currently sitting atop their division, Marco in the Middle have clinched their playoff berth after a strong late-season performance. With Backyard Bullies tailing right behind them, the next two games are crucial if they want the bye-week and the honors. I don’t expect MITM to slow down seeing how strong they are rolling right now and they should remain up there in the top 4 and fight for seeding.
-
Game Changers : Similar scenario to their friends the Maloudes, Game Changers have clinched and the bye-week / bragging rights are on the line this week. Win and you’ll most likely end first in the conference. Lose and you can fall into a bad spot. Regardless of this week’s outcome, I don’t expect GC to drop week 11’s and we’ll either be 1st or 5th.
-
Two and a half Dans : The Infamous Dans have clinched their playoff berth ! I’m really happy for them. The unorthodox style prevails in D4. They could steal the divisional title from Grip n Rip, but their ties are really hurting them right now. They’d need to win-out with GnR losing both games. It’s not a very probable scenarios, so expect the Dans to fight for seeding and maintain that 6th seed going into the wild-card rounds.
-
Backyard Bullies : Sitting strong at the 7th spot, they are still in contention for the divisional title against Marco in the Middle. I feel Backyard Bullies have been slumping recently and they are facing two playoff contenders in the next two weeks. Rich Humes will need to get back into form and get his offense rolling, because we know the defense is playing good. I don’t expect Backyard Bullies to win their division, but I do see them as a strong wild-card team coming in week 12.
-
Show me your TDs : I’m a bit surprised to see them at the 8th seed to be honest. They’ve been clutch recently and their most recent wins are really helping them late in this season. Addona has been playing better and his teams are collecting W’s. The divisional title is a bit far-fetched, but it isn’t improbable. I foresee SMYTDs to finish strong and maintain this seeding for the wild-card rounds.
-
Mustangs DG : They started off slow and had me worried. Then, they decided to kick it up a notch and win big. After a 4-game winning streak, they’ve hit a serious slump and they’ve dropped the last 3. Sitting at 9 points with only 1 game left on their schedule, a win will see them clinched and they need it. Let’s not risk it, play it safe guys!
-
A-Squad : At 8 points, A-Squad are looking good for a playoff berth. Not necessarily on the bubble itself, A-Squad have their own faith in their own hands. Two straight wins will have them clinched, a single win will solidify and see them praying for losses. To lose-out at this point would be a serious disappointment, but that won’t mean they are out of contention neither. They have a good spot for the remaining of the season and I expect them to fight tooth and nails to defend it.
-
Dragons: 7 points after 8 week is a serious disappointment. I’m not happy with our current seeding, but we deserve it. With the return of Maxime Côté in the roster and an easier finish to our schedule, we should be able to get a win or two and clinch playoff berth. Week 11 might determine who’s in and who’s out.
-
Bruthers : Bruthers were so strong early in the season and I feel like they’ve been slumping as of late. Starting off the season 3-0, they’ve dropped the last 5 (including a tie) and their offense simply isn’t clicking like it should. Sitting as the 12th seed and last spot in the playoffs, they are far from safe. They have an advantage on the teams on the outside looking in, but it’s very slim. It’s time to step it up and win games. With two tough games coming up, if they can’t beat CREAM Team, it’ll come down to a showdown against Dragons (the easier game of the two).
-
Lobster Dinner : I must admit, I wasn’t high on Lobster Dinner this season. I expected more from the get-go and I feel a bit disappointed, but then again, Jonathan Brown also told me he was disappointed in my success in D4 so far, so I guess we got that kinda relationship going. Either way, Lobster Dinner aren’t dead yet! Sitting with 6 points, they can still make the leap into the playoffs. They can’t have the divisional title, but I’d love to see them win-out the remaining of the season (since they are facing easier teams, both aren’t playoff contenders) and to sit pretty with 10 points in the middle of the pack rather than a low seed with 8 points.
-
Playground : I expected Playground to be such an offensive juggernaut after the first few weeks, but I must admit, the slump began right after a tough loss to the Dragons. With a very, very tough end of the season, Playground will need to make a miracle happen or pray other teams lose. They need at least one win out of their next two games to make it in and that alone will be tough. If they can pull that through, the Football Gods might look their way for Favor.
-
Longhorns : Longhorns has seriously improved since the beginning of the season and their defense is playing great football. No one ever doubted the Longhorns’ IQ and they’ve been great as of late. Too late ? Probably. With only 5 points, they need a win to make it in if other teams lose-out and they’d need two wins to actually be within contention range. It’s a bit far-fetched considering they are facing an hungry Grip n Rip team this week. Nothing’s impossible, but I fear we’ll see Longhorns on the outside looking in this season.
-
Sandlot Saints : Sandlot Saints started off very, very slow. With the emergence of Vincent Alessandrini on both side of the ball and Tim Kraemer doing his thing on defense, this team looked good. With Kraemer missing the last two, Sandlot Saints dropped their hopes of making the playoffs this year in my opinion. They had it, but FPF isn’t everything. With two tough matchups coming up, I hope they make the most out of the remaining of the season and upset at least one team for the heck of it !
-
Certified Flyguyz : With 9 games played, Flyguyz are the first team to be officially eliminated from playoff contention in Conference B. With their last game coming up on Saturday, I feel like Flyguyz will try to ball one last time before a long off-period until spring. I really hope they’ll be back and figure out the reason they only managed to get 2 wins with such a strong roster.
-
Whisperers : This team dropped so many balls this season that they even dropped the one they really needed to make it into the playoffs. They aren’t mathematically out yet, but realistically, it isn’t looking good. With two playoff contenders left on the schedule, Whisperers needs to win-out and help from others teams just to squeeze in. Sadly, it sounds a bit too improbable and they’ll end up reminiscing about their season rather than preparing to face teams in the playoffs this year.
-
Les Affreux : Similarly to the Whisperers’ case, Les Affreux really dropped the ball this season figuratively speaking. I expected them to fight for the divisional title or at least give it a good run, but now they’re sitting last and feeling beat. With 4 points and a poor divisional record, Les Affreux’ chances are slim. They need to win-out starting off with a very, very tough matchup against the Dans this week. Sadly, even if they win-out, that might just not be enough. Let’s start by winning so we get momemtum going for spring season, it can’t hurt.
-
Eskimo Brothers : With just 3 points, Eskimo Brothers are officially out of playoff contention considering Dragons and Bruthers are playing each other week 11 and 7 points will not be enough. It was a tough season for Eskimo Brothers, but they balled week-in and week-out and I expect them to finish on a high note to get spring season going the right way. They are facing a strong playoff contender in week 10, but week 11 should turn out to be an excellent game and it could set them up right before the off-season.
Previews
- In D4, no one is safe (unless you’re already eliminated or clinched). Punt Returners, sitting at 9 points are looking good, but this isn’t over for them and a losing streak could have them falling off sooner than later. This week, they’ll face a BMS Goats that really need their last game to be a win. Both teams are slumping and have to pick it up somehow. This needs to be a game with high scores; both offenses really need the spark. I got word that BMS Goats’ players will be facing discipline coming from what they’ve done against CREAM Team last week; read what I mentioned above. This being said, BMS Goats without Lazzara won’t stand a chance against Punt Returners. This could really end up being a blessing in disguise for Punt Returners.
- My 2nd Game of the Week has Coyotes facing off against Crisp. Both sitting pretty at 14 points will seize division and bye-week with the win this week. I’m excited for this game. Both offensive powerhouses facing off. Coyotes are catching up fire late in this season while Crisp is coming off a slump and are coming back online. On paper, Crisp has the advantage, hands down. But in a 44 minute game of FlagPlus Football, anything can happen. A bad drop could mean a loss and this is why this game is SO exciting. I expect Crisp to come in guns blazing and I expect Coyotes to bring their A-Game. You will not win with 30 points, so show me ‘em 40 burgers.
- The battle of the gutters. TCO vs Black Ice. Yes, TCO is mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. Yes, Black Ice are in a tough spot (see comments above), but this doesn’t mean this can’t be a great game. I’ve avoided the subject of these two teams as of late, because I hate thrashing on teams are that aren’t doing so well, but I think we’ll see the best of both teams this week. If TCO can settle for a QB and put their trust in him, he might just lead his team to victory (whoever he is). Black Ice can’t afford a loss (they’ll be eliminated if they do) so I expect them to play their best football. It will be a defensive battle and I expect 4 TDs (or 20 points) to win it. Make me proud TCO (I did pick you guys after all)
- Show me your TDs are facing off Backyard Bullies this week. This doesn’t have the same playoff implications as other games, but I believe it’ll be a great one nonetheless. The matchup is great and a win from either teams will have them clinch playoff berth. Since a loss won’t mean they are gone, the implications aren’t all that enormous, BUT this still matters and I expect both teams to ball hard. Backyard Bullies aren’t playing as well as I expected them to and they NEED the confidence boost this win could give them (let’s not forget this win could mean clinching division). Show me your TDs have found ways to win as of late and this could be just another one of these games. Two great underdogs facing off in Week 10; this looks a lot like a wild-card game.
- A-Squad vs Shmoney doesn’t look like much from the outside, but this matchup is a nightmare for both teams. A-Squad holds a roster that could cause serious trouble to Shmoney and are the kind of team they haven’t faced yet. A-Squad really needs to win to solidify their playoff berth (although they will not officially clinch with just a win). Shmoney have already clinched, but the division bye-week is still up for grabs and a loss could have them near the edge of losing it. Kevin Lubin might be the nightmare Shmoney’s defense have feared for the past few weeks and I’m eager to see how McGrath will adjust against a physical defense that will not give too much separation to his receivers. This game could really go both ways.
- When I meant playoff implications in week 10, this is the kind of matchup I was talking about : Recipe 4 Disaster against TrapStars. Technically speaking, both teams have a playoff spot. Realistically, the loser of this game could find himself fighting for survival next week while the other walks off in the sunset. R4D has a tricky offensive that finds unorthodox ways to score regardless of the scenario in front of them which will give them a great edge against a strong defense like TrapStars’. The part where things get tricky is R4D’s defense hasn’t played up to potential as of late and TrapStars’ offense is seriously spiraling. Could this be the game they bounce back and shock D4? They REALLY need to. Like another week slumping could have them going into Week 10 as underdogs and losing both games could have them knocked out of playoff contention. I think TrapStars will gain a confidence boost here, but R4D might just be too crafty.
- The Game of the Week in D4 and, well, in FPF in my opinion. Maloudes facing off against Game Changers. Old teammates against old teammates; friends against friends and playing for a divisional title + bye week. I’m not sure how hotter this can get (unless it was a playoff game). Both defenses match up very well against the others’ offense and I expect every single player to be at the top of their game. This has bragging rights written all over it. Sakiz is better than Frezza as a QB, but Maloudes’ supporting cast has the edge on Game Changers’. I’m excited. This is definitely a preview to Conference B’s epic clash in the playoffs and I expect both teams to go balls-out and give the FPF nation a show. Can Maloude stop Bertoldi? Yes. Can Game Changers stop Paquette/Morissette? Yes. Will they? I expect big things.
Predictions
With GM officially out of the picture (he surrendered, obviously), I crown myself winner once again. I shall keep track of my progression regardless for the heck of it. Plus, it’s fun to see how right I can be !
This week, I ended up going 15 / 19 which is pretty good. Knowing GM, he would’ve flunk most of them and complained. Classic G.M.
