Same Storylines New Season

The FPF Fall 2021 season has kicked off. There will be three writers covering the entire league this season. Peeze, Iggy and I will be mixing in coverage of every division into our articles so be sure to read every article each week to see what is being said about your team. We will all be doing weekly recaps and previews. In addition, we will each throw in our own special segment. In my article, I will be doing a weekly team of the week for each division. If there is a different special segment you would rather see me cover, feel free to send me suggestions to [email protected]

Apart from writing for FPF, I also play in the league and I have been for quite a while now. Generally I both write and play in the Coed division so (I hope) Coed knows me well by know. This year in addition to playing for Kiss My End Zone in Coed, I will also be playing for Post Malone’s Knights in Tier 3. If you ever want to come talk, those are the games to find me at. I am also normally a scorekeeper, but I have decided to take this season off from scorekeeping.

My weekly articles will follow a similar pattern throughout the year. I will cover last week’s games, talk about the top individual performances, and predict the outcomes of the next week’s games. However, nothing is set in stone. I am writing these articles for you so if there anything you would like to see me change or add, please feel free to contact me by email at [email protected] Last season I also be wrote for FPF Junior. In those articles, I mixed in some audio segments. If anyone is interested in seeing that in these articles as well, please let me know.

Without further ado, let’s jump right into our game recaps from week 1.

Week 1 Recaps

Blessed (38) vs EZW (33)

Off the heels of their Division C championship win, Blessed are back and even better than before. They added the supremely talented Justin Lerner to their roster all while maintaining their already impressive core. The biggest star on this loaded team is a short, aging, bucket hat wearing quarterback called Steve. While Stephen Harripersaud might not look the part, I think he is the best quarterback in this Fall Cup. Simply put, Harripersaud does not throw interceptions. In over 250 attempts last season, he only turned the ball over five times. That means only 2% of his attempted passes were intercepted. If he can keep up that percentage this season, Blessed will be nearly impossible to beat.

In this match, William Power atoned for his lackluster showing in the Division C finals with an impressive showing in this one. He led his team in receiving yards, catching six of the nine targets thrown his way for 80 yards and three scores. He was just as strong defensively with six tackles and a crucial interception. Behind Power, Harripersaud did a great job of spreading the ball. Five different receivers all finished the game with at least four receptions. The unheralded defensive hero of this Blessed team is definitely Terry Babalis. He tallied four sacks in this game and held the elusive Jeremy White to just 21 rushing yards. While White is known for being one of the most sackable QBs in the league, four sacks is still an impressive feat and was a big reason why the Blessed won this game.

Even though EZW did not win this one, they impressed me. EZW were bottom dwellers in Division C last season, and they were going up against an improved version of the Division C champs. Not only were EZW winning this game at the half but they were also leading this one until the very last play. It took a dramatic game winning drive from Blessed to win this game. That drive was capped with a 13-yard walk-off touchdown to James Langshaw. What impressed me the most about EZW was actually their defence and trust me, defence is not normally this team’s strong suit. Not only did they pick off Harripersaud, something which barely ever happens, but they also forced him to turn the ball over twice on downs. If EZW can improve on this performance, they could turn some heads in Tier 1.

Yin & Yang (22) vs The Rock (13)

We are only one game into the season and there are already, again, roster questions surrounding this Y&Y team. At a first glance, it appeared that Y&Y were taking it easy by not starting Gino Di Fazio at quarterback. However, if Di Fazio were to have thrown in this one, Y&Y would have busted the cap and forfeited. I believe Quaysie Gordon-Maule will quarterback this team. While I think Gordon-Maule is a very serviceable Coed quarterback, he is definitely a better receiver. As a defensive play caller in Coed, I would be much more scared of Di Fazio throwing to Gordon-Maule than I am of Gordon-Maule throwing to anyone else on this roster.

While there might be questions circling this team at the quarterback position, they silenced any lingering critiques from last season about their defence. They picked off The Rock a stupendous five times in this game. Frederique Brunette led the charge with two interceptions, one of which she returned for a touchdown.

As for The Rock, there is a lot of talent on this team. They have flag football veterans in Marie-Christine Gauthier and Alex Laroche, who the team is named after. However, there is no amount of experience that can counteract the five interceptions that Carol-Ann Ménard threw in this game. If The Rock hope to win a game this season, they will need to cleanup those turnovers in a drastic way.

Week 1 Team of the Week

Every week, I will name 12 players to the team of the week. If you make the offensive team of the week, you cannot be on the defensive one and vice versa. However, you can make the team of the week in multiple divisions. For the Coed division there will always be a minimum of two women on the offensive and defensive team of the week.

Week 2 Predictions

Bruins (0-1) vs Tough Lungs (1-0)

The Bruins disappointed me in week 1 while the Tough Lungs surprised me. Tough Lungs returned a very similar team to last season and managed to start the season with a win over a talented Hot Sauce Sports Team. On the other hand, the Bruins were unable to shutdown Jocelyn Calixte in their first game of the season and that ultimately cost them the win. In this match up, they will need to find a way to cover Justin Lerner or they will suffer the same fate as they did in week 1. Ultimately, I think Rocco Christiano will cover Lerner out of this game and secure the win for the Bruins.

Prediction: Bruins

TuneSquad (1-0) vs West World (1-0)

While West World might not have much, or any, FPF experience there is something they do have: speed. This team can turn slants into 20-yard gains and there is always the threat of the run game. While TuneSquad might have an experienced roster, they do not have very much speed, especially with Jonatan Lebensztajn-Shahrabani out for the season with a head injury and Charles Presser out this week, this is going to be an uphill matchup for TuneSquad. Ultimately, I think Garner Ross and his wonky throwing motion will have a long night against a very quick West World defence.

Prediction: West World

Sorry this article came out after week 2 already started. The combination of one week ending Monday and the other starting Wednesday, coupled with midterm exams made for a tough situation.

I hope you enjoyed your week 1 article, even if it did come out a bit late!
