Week 2 recap and a look ahead to Week 3

The second week of the season has now come & gone. While the games did provide some great moments, we only had 2 close games. I am enjoying watching games at the Baie d’Urfe complexe as it allows 3 games to occur at once rather that the single field that was used at the Kirkland venue.

NFL weekend should see the 49ers (old school favorite for me) and Chiefs move on to Miami. Looking forward to seeing what happens…if I ever get to Halifax. Multiple delays at the airport have me writing this from the AC Lounge.

Random 35+ thoughts

Robbie Robinson had quite the week as he threw for 7 TDs in his 35+ game with FPF and also hit for 7 TDs throwing for Sweat & Beers in D3
Incredible stat, considering how Flag Football works, is seeing Polvige with only 27 PA in the first 2 games
O.A.S. defence had themselves quite the game with 5 INTs, 6 PDs, 3 TDs, and a sack.
That performance has helped them accumulate a +59 difference in 2 games.
Chris Talbot from Polvige had one of the funnier INTs as he was in a trail position and Eugene McLaren hit his receiver in the hands. Unfortunately, the ball did not stay there and seemed to simply hover in the air awaiting Talbot’s arrival.

Random league thoughts

The Play by Play recap feature is pretty darn cool and now we have team stats as well for each game
D1: Justin McLean continues to strut his stuff as he went 7-67-2 TDs & added an INT and 2 PDs on defence
D1: No ANP for FMS and it hurt as they fell 32-6 to Da Finest without their QB
D2: I cannot recall the last time a D2 team got shut out but that happened to the Killa Bees in week 2. 4 INTs thrown did not help them in their loss to Les Studs
D3: WOW the offences came out to play as 13 teams hit the 30-point mark. I mentioned it earlier, but Robbie Robinson led the way with 7 TDs and 300+ yards
D4B: speaking of 7 TD games, Ben Lawlor & Benjamin McMahon both threw 7 each in their match up. Defence???
Weird to see the Division QB leaders…new faces. D1 is led by Nicola Centomo (Yds/TDs), D2 by Mat Rene (Yds/TDs), D3 by Jason Rossie (Yds/TDs), and 35+ by Robbie Robinson (Yds/TDs). Weird but cool to perhaps see a changing of the guard
Speaking of Jason Rossie & the JYD, with the Semerjian brothers & Paul Lapierre, that is one hell of a tall offence.

WEEK 2 REVIEW (due to injury I was not playing, and our game was on the middle field. Great vantage point to peek in on the first 3 games at once)

PAZAZZ 27 Polvige 30

What I wrote: This should be a fun game to watch. I do believe that both QBs will improve upon the week 1 performances. Ryan Kastner loves to run timing routes and will continue to build that synchronicity with his receivers as the season progresses. For PAZAZZ it will be a question of their defence getting on the same page. Eugene will also need to use his legs to move the chains a bit more. I think that Polvige will move to 2-0 once this game is over

What actually happened: Polvige did indeed move to 2-0 with their victory in this game. Ryan Kastner looked fairly comfortable in this game and spread the ball around as he found 7 different receivers. Rick Jennings led the way with 2 TDs. For PAZAZZ it was weird to not see Rob Allen be more of a focal point. One of the more dominant players in all of 35+ he was held to 1 reception for 3 yards. While he did chip in with an INT on defence this is not the path to success.

MTL Spitfire 12 Monster 29

What I wrote: I think that Monster will be coming into this game with something to prove. They were missing 2 of their best players and their QB had an off night. I see them being ready to ball out in this game. Look for Andy to test his legs against the rush early and often. As for the Spitfire they will need a better performance from their QB as well. Sean Avraam had a tough start last week and cannot allow the game to get ahead of him. He does get Jimmy Coupethwaite back on offence so that should help. If the rushers for the Spitfire can contain Peterkin, then they will get the Win.

What actually happened: The Spitfire are missing two of their key players from last season and it is hard to tell which absence is hurting more. Sean Avraam has definitely had his challenges so far in his 35+ QB debut and was not helped by an ankle injury and multiple dropped balls this week, but I would say that the loss of Andrew Adams at the Rush position is just as big of a difference thus far this season. Andy Peterkin was able to buy time throughout the game and picked up first downs with his legs whenever he wanted. The Spitfire defence did a good job in coverage and limited Monster to 114 yards passing but Peterkin added another 36 on the ground and that was the difference. Both teams moved the ball, but the Spitfire were unable to finish their drives with multiple end zone drops.

GOXM 14 OAO 20

What I wrote: Rookie vs Vet. Big Play vs Dink & Dunk. This is definitely a difference of styles. Fresh of the tie against Monster the OAO are on a roll and will look to continue things. I simply feel that Harripersaud knows his system & players better than Jordan Rossie does at this point in the season and it will show in this game. OAO for the win.

What actually happened: Weird game to watch. I am not used to seeing Stephen Harripersaud struggle with his ball control offence but the GOXM held him to 9 completions on the night. He did score on 33% of his completions and got the win so it was not a terrible evening, just not his usual efficient one. Wade Williams was back for the GOXM and made an impact on the game with 5-41-1 TD on offence. Guatama S. continues to lead the way on offence after handing the QB reins to Jordan Rossie.

FPF 46 JMJ 33

What I wrote: This game has the potential to get ugly really quickly. Robbie Robinson looked in complete control last week and JMJ looked to be in complete disarray. Brian Eudoxie is going to have to put on his best Rusher Shoes and force Robbie to get rid of the ball quickly for JMJ to have any chance in this one. That also means covering Dan Dick on quick routes as he and Robbie have tremendous chemistry when things break down. Brian Martin & Lonnie Johnson provide two BIG targets in the seams…have fun slowing them down. For JMJ they cannot drop the ball like they did last week. Relying on your QB to move the chains with his legs is not going to win you very many ball games.

What actually happened: This was the most fun game to watch on the evening. Jon Moodie injured himself in his divisional game, so Cory Johnson took the helm for JMJ. Remember that Johnson led FPF to the championship LAST season, so he does have the pedigree to get things done. Unfortunately, he was up against Robbie Robinson who is on a bit of a hot streak at the moment. RR finished with 7 TDs to 4 different receivers and 265 yards. He was also a monster on defence with 4 PDs and an INT. Joel Watson was the big target on the evening as he repeatedly got behind coverage and finished with 121 receiving yards. Cory’s favorite target was Karim Yasmine and one of his 2 TDs was a fund dipsy doodle through a few defenders.

OAS 44 Pacemakers 12

What I wrote: This one also could be a bit lopsided. OAS look like the defending D1 champions that they are and do not appear to have skipped a beat. Cory Pecker, Kevin Wyeth, and Shane Williams are a 3 headed monster on offence. The Pacemakers will need a perfect game from Jason Rossie in order to keep this one interesting. Look for him to use his legs more often than he did in week 1 in order to move the chains. In the end I think that OAS simply has too much firepower

What actually happened: This one was lopsided. The OAS defence simply dominated this game. 5 INTs, 3 by Andrew Blevings (?), 6 PDs, and 3 defensive TDs simply put this game to bed early. Jason Rossie turned the ball over on the 3rd play and Kevin Wyeth found the end zone on the next play. 2 plays later and Blevings had a PICK 6 and this game was basically done. The Pacemakers continued to battle, Rob White was the games leading receiver with 7 receptions for 54 yards. For OAS, Cory Pecker went 10-13 for 127 yards. Not big numbers but when the defence did what it did you really do not get that many opportunities.

Week 2 preview

Pacemakers vs. Old Age Outlaws

Winner of this game will lead the Tier. This should be a fun game to watch as Jason Rossie and Stephen Harripersaud square off. After an off week look for Stephen to get back into his normal game and wear down the Pacemakers. I have little doubt that the Pacemakers are going to come out swinging in an attempt to get the foul taste of their last game out of their mouths. If Jason has his full roster, I am expecting him to take some deep shots early and often. I think that the Pacemakers take this game and move into first place

Grumpy Old X-Men vs. MTL Spitfire

Speaking of bitter tastes…the Spitfire are still looking to play a consistent game this season. While Avraam looked much better in his second game, he was not helped by the receiving corps. For the GOXM they are also adjusting to life with a new pivot as Jordan Rossie has struggled this season as well. Something has to give in this game, and I think the Spitfire defence will be the difference

PAZAZZ vs. JMJ

So many questions to be answered. Will Jon Moodie be healthy enough to play and if so, does he throw? Cory Johnson looked good last week and might merit the start regardless of Moodie’s health. Where does Rob Allen fit in Eugene’s offence? 6 receptions in 2 games is not normal for him. If they were 2-0 you might be able to justify it but at 0-2 you need to start getting him the ball.

Polvige vs. FPF

First place on the line in this match up of 2-0 teams. The two new “rookie” QBs will square off as Robbie Robinson and Ryan Kastner lead their teams in search of the 3-0 record. Robbie might have just as much of an impact on the defensive side of things and is the difference maker. Should be interesting to see who Polvige send at him on the rush. I do believe that Addley Dufour is their best option, but he is also one of their best coverage defenders. Should be fun

OAS vs. Monster

We end the night with yet another first place showdown. Andy Peterkin is going to have to be as effective this week against the OAS rush as he was against the Spitfire. If he can slow things down and move the chains with his legs when need be then this will be a good game. If he can’t do that then we will see why OAS is +59 through 2 weeks.
