Division 5A & 5B Week 2 Recap

Week 2

Are you not entertained?

I think for the most part, there have still been a lot of surprises and upsets in Week 2, even though theseason is still so young. I think a lot of teams are still feeling the effects of the winter months and are not fully in the right mindset or back in the rhythm from last spring. You can include myself in that list for sure.

This week, I’m excited to be at Brossard and Lachine on Saturday night as well as my usual Monday nights at Hebert. I’m excited to get a chance to check out teams I may not have seen play yet and give you guys more content. Safe to say, we won’t be talking about the Process for the  rest of the year – I just wanted to bring you guys the recap because of the self-dubbed game of the week happening right in front of me.

Hope everybody isn’t too sore and ready to go this week, I definitely… am not.

Recaps

Buffalo Wild Wings 22 vs. Nakatomi Survivors 13

Unless you need a good friend, a beer, or some useless knowledge, the answer to “Who ya gonna call” is almost never Peeze. Regardless, that’s the situation that Nakatomi Survivors are faced with currently. Kidding aside, any last minute QB change is not usually a recipe for success as it can take time to build some chemistry and get a rhythm going on offense.

Buffalo Wild Wings started off the game with a touchdown to Laurent Lamar and they generally had command of the offense, thanks in large part to the mobility of Tristan Rinaldis. Thankfully, the Nakatomi Survivors answered fairly quickly after Peeze was able to hit back to back routes over the middle, first to Mike Addona and then to GM Kolethras. Just like that, game is tied at 7. After both teams traded scores again, Buffalo Wild Wings got their first advantage after intercepting an extra point attempt and returning that all the way to the other endzone, giving them a small lead.

While the first half was close, the second half was when things started to fall apart for the Nakatomi Survivors. Peeze was visibly frustrated after having trouble stringing together completions and began to force his throws. Regardless, the game remained close for most of the game until an illtimed interception in the Redzone by the Nakatomi Survivors. That was the turning point that Rinaldis and Piette needed. They drove the field and scored a touchdown, adding the two-point conversion to go up by 9 and not look back.

Tents & Hammocks 24 vs. Rollin’ with Mahomies 25

In a typical game of who can score more extra points, Mahomies won that battle by a score of one to nothing. Both teams came in to this game with strong, experienced rosters, tough defenses and offenses that are known to put up points.  Tents & Hammocks showed early that they were in control with the usual recipe of short throws to Alex Joltopuf and crossing routes to Danny Aylward.

On the other side of the ball, Zacharie Quiviger tried to get the ball to Nicolas Saro early and often and Tents & Hammocks did not seem to have a way to slow him down. Both Danny Aylward and Saro had two touchdowns in this one to lead their respective teams.

The difference in this game was twofold. The experience of Quiviger over Brandon Aylward in the redzone was huge, even if it only mattered on 4-5 plays and the overall depth of the Mahomies makes them slightly more difficult to plan for and defend. We may have very well seen a playoff preview where the Tents & Hammocks will have to get more diverse and creative to give themselves a chance.

The Process 33 vs. EZW 6

I’ll be one of the first to say that my prediction for this game was way off. Jeremy White and Andrew Langburt completely flipped the switch on me and we saw Langburt with the huge game and White left a lot to be desired.

The game started with a possession for The Process getting to 4th down and Andrew made a great play to avoid the rusher, extend the play and hit Jonathan Perez on a deep crossing route. Most thought he would score on the play, but it took just one more completion to DonnDre Borden to finish the first drive just as the Process had planned.

6-0.

EZW’s first drive was a lot less successful. Jeremy White made a few completions early that looked promising, but then Justin Frankel got his first sack of the night on first down which completely turned the drive around. Two incompletions followed and then EZW couldn’t get close on 4th down and turned the ball over. It took only 3 plays by Langburt and The Process afterwards to score their second touchdown of the game to Jakob Boidman to go up by 14.

The story for EZW was Jeremy White’s inability to sustain long drives. He had a few moments of brilliance followed by 3 straight downs of either incompletions or sacks. A lot of sacks. Frankel finished the night with a total of 6 and he was the difference in this one. The Process took away the short crossing routes that Jeremy White clearly wanted to run which gave Frankel the little time he needed to get to the quarterback. He may have ended the night with a couple of bloody knees but I’d like to think it was worth it.

Langburt was able to hit most of his receivers all game because EZW was not able to hold their coverage long enough. Langburt extended most plays and found guys wide open deep. He definitely had EZW guessing most of the game, and they often didn’t guess right. As we’ll see later on, this game was so lopsided because of Langburt’s two-way ability, Frankel’s speed closing in on Jeremy White and The Process’ next man up mentality on both sides of the ball. Their entire team can make a play when called upon and it’s tough to imagine another team with as much depth.

Punishers 25 vs. Sterdam 32

Monday night at Hebert started off with an extremely close game between these two teams. Both teams came to play and Punishers actually controlled the tempo for most of the game but Sterdam took advantage of a little bit of complacency by the Punishers late in the game and a few turnovers to get the victory.

Defensively, nobody on the Punishers had an answer for Gabriel Possion. Sterdam may have known that Anthony Siggia would ball out in the middle of the field so they attempted a lot of crossing routes with Poisson and tried to get him the ball near the sidelines in open space. Spoiler alert, it worked. He ended the night with a receiving touchdown and a passing touchdown along with two interceptions on defense – he literally did everything for Sterdam.

Unfortunately, you won’t see it on the scoresheet online, but the best player that night for the Punishers was Ryan David who didn’t have a legal jersey with him. He was dynamic on both sides of the ball and was open for touchdowns down the sideline and on a post over the middle to keep the Punishers in the game and often ahead throughout.

Ultimately, the mobility of Massimo Manago made up for his lack of accuracy at times and he made a few huge plays on the ground, including a 27 yard run for a TD. The biggest play of the night came when Sterdam had a short field but found themselves on 4th down. Manago threw the ball into the middle of the field with a prayer and William Tremblay-Lacombe caught the ball over the defender and walked into the endzone for the go ahead score.

On a night where both teams looked competitive, Sterdam had one extra play up their sleeve over the experienced Punishers. It wouldn’t surprise me to still see both teams in the playoffs come the end of the season.

Corey’s Love ‘EM & Hate ‘EM

Overall, last week was probably a split decision for me. I got a few calls right, some wrong, and others where guys just didn’t play or got hurt. In 5A, Jordan Allard did well enough to get the call this week and both David De Andrade and Zacharie Quiviger proved me wrong this week. I was wrong about Tulino and Alex David who both had quiet weeks, while Kristian Cerantola struggled as predicted. Charles Verreault continues his strong play and had 3 TDs in a week where I thought he may slow down. In 5B, Ryan Kharouf went for 5 TDs and almost 10 yards per completion and Jeremy White struggled mightily against the Process, getting sacked 6 times. Andrew Langburt had one of the best games I’ve seen from him in a game where I thought he may put up a pedestrian numbers. Both Siggia and Power had quiet games by their standards and Alexandre Bresse was invisible on offense against The U.

This week, I’ll take a few more shots and hope to play Miss Cleo. I may or may not be able to predict as much, but I can promise that I’m cheaper.

5A Quarterbacks I LOVE in Week 3

Broccasion – Justin Cerantola – I think after a few warm up games, Justin will have his best game of the short season and learn to use his weapons. Give me at least 4 total TDs.

Longhorns – Jon Moodie – Turns out, Moodie is back. With that, I think the Longhorns will benefit and get back on track.

5A Quarterbacks I HATE in Week 3

Rollin’ with Mahomies – Zacharie Quiviger – Off to a great start to the season, I think he’ll get his toughest challenge this week. A great game would be more than 3 touchdowns in this kind of game.

Palpatine – Marc-Andre Deslauriers – Putting up 0 in a game is never a good sign. He’ll need to fix his offense quickly and he’ll be without Luis Begin for at least some time. Is it time to panic?

Nakatomi Survivors – Peeze Della Reeze – I think the offense will continue to struggle against an even tougher opponent this week.

5A Receivers I LOVE in Week 3

Ravens – Alex David – Losing Luis Begin to injury will leave a huge hole and Alex David will be the first beneficiary of that. He’s had a solid start to the season but I think this will be his best game so far.

Buffalo Wild Wings – Marc-Andre Piette – Mark my words, he will score his first TD of the season this week.

Spartans – Alexandre Noel – After a tough start, this may be Noel’s best chance at a highlight reel type game.

5A Receivers I HATE in Week 3

BFPM8 – Rico Tulino – It will be tough to have such a strong performance against GLC this week. They’re big and talented on defense and only averaging 20 points against.

No Show – Chris Olson – Started on my LOVE list, I think that Chris Olson will have a tough time against the Saiyans this week.

5B Quarterbacks I LOVE in Week 3

EZW – Jeremy White – Only a week removed from my HATE list, I think this will be a bounce back week against a team giving up 26 points per game. Give me a floor of 4 TDs for White.

The Process – Andrew Langburt – After my call last week, I’m confident in his ability in the pocket to extend plays and make things happen for this very talented Process team.

Bruins – Gabriel Wiseman – The Punishers haven’t figured things out on defense yet and I think that Gabriel Wiseman takes advantage. I’m thinking 5 touchdowns and a pick in this game.

5B Quarterbacks I HATE in Week 3

Punishers – Adamo Iadeluca – I’ll say a 3 touchdown and 2 interception kind of game, I think this will be the lowest point total offensively for the Punishers this season.

Dope Boys – Guillaume Godard – Already off to a rough start, he faces a very solid defense this week so I don’t imagine things getting any better.

Kneed Help – Yossi Cohen – I’m hoping this pick proves me wrong, but Kneed Help does in fact need some assistance in all facets. Their offense has not looked good so far this season.

5B Receivers I LOVE in Week 3

Black Knights – Dynell Pierre – I think this is the week where he finally goes off. Book it.

Bruins – Zach Zwirn – On this list twice in a row, I haven’t seen anybody that can really contain Zwirn. He’s probably the closest thing to a sure thing in the division.

EZW – Etienne Laurence-Gervais – With White having a bounce back week, I think Laurence-Gervais will be the biggest beneficiary.

5B Receivers I HATE in Week 3

Fighting Flamingos – Brandon Keiller – I think the U will keep the Flamingos top receiver in check this week.

Honey Martin – Enzo Bellini – Off to a great start to the season, I can see him slowing down against the Finessers this week.

“You Ball, You get the Call”

Welcome to Week 2. I’m not sure what it is, but 5B seems to get a lot more standout performances rather than 5A seems to be more team oriented. That being said, the trend in 5B this week is a more of a two-man show. There are always so many guys to pick from, but here’s who stood out for me.

5A

Outlaws – Stephen Harripersaud – 19/27, 199 yards, 6 TDs, 1 INT

  1. Nice to see you back on this list. What are your expectations for this season with the Outlaws?

As far as we can go. Competition within the division is tough. There are some great teams in our conference.

  1. Looks like you’ll be playing on 3 teams this season, how do you manage?

I’m actually playing on two teams, the third is more as sub when needed.

  1. What happened to Wrecking Crew?

Some guys moved out of province and injuries prevented some guys from committing the whole season.

Super Saiyans – Jordan Allard – 19/29, 180 yards, 4 TDs, 2 rushes, 11 yards

  1. Can you share with the league what exactly happened to start off this game?

Yeah that was a little unfortunate! I was playing a double header that night and it ended up finishing a few minutes late. The refs started the Saiyan game without me and so I missed out on the opening offensive possession.

  1. You guys are often talked about as one of the teams to beat in the division, by myself as well. What makes the Saiyans so tough to play against?

I think it’s our chemistry. We’ve had a pretty consistent roster and we’ve been playing together for a few seasons now so we’re pretty synchronized.

  1. In 3 years you’ve already accomplished quite a bit in the league, what are your goals for this season?

Honestly for this season the goal is to get a championship, we feel as competitive as ever and as a unit we are playing well. For me personally, I’ve won a championship as a receiver and I’d like to win one as quarterback as well.

Voodoo – Angelo Garofalo – 2 catches, 28 yards, 1 TD, 2 tackles, 3 INTs, 2 PDs

  1. You’ve been around the league for a while but first time playing with Voodoo. What got you to join the squad?

I usually play with team ethnik but we didn’t have enough guys this season. I was supposed to join David De Andrade’s tip top shape in div 5. A scheduling conflict forced me to reach out for another team. I had played with Frank Kaye and many of the Voodoo team while they were called le Zoo. I knew that it was a great fit!

  1. How important is it to play with a QB with some experience in the league like Frank?

Quarterback play is crucial in any division but I feel like having an experienced one in the lower divisions is that much more important. We have some great playmakers on offence but it wouldn’t matter if we didn’t have Frank distributing it. There’s great chemistry on this team and Frank knows that no one will give him better feedback than his own receivers.

  1. 3 interceptions in a game is an impressive stat line. Did you do anything differently this week or did the ball just seem to find you?

Our defense played a great game by taking away the easy throws. On 2 of the interceptions, the QB felt the clock ticking and made bad throws. The third one was a nice tip drill pick. From what I read, Voodoo’s weakness was our defense. In 2019 we will make it our strength!

Rollin’ with Mahomies – Nicolas Saro – 9 catches, 80 yards, 2 TDs

  1. Definitely expected at least one team to use a similar team name, where does the love for Mahomes come from? Any chiefs fans on the team or just pure love for the guy tearing up the league right now?

Our love for the Chiefs comes from our team captain, Alexis Labonté. To use his words, he says that: ‘’Mahomes est chaud bouillant’’. Moreover, we can say that we have pure love for the guy, he’s been impressive. We will try not to tarnish his name.

  1. It was an extremely tight game, what led to you guys coming away with the victory?

We started the game with two redzone interceptions on our first two drives. Joey and Danny came up big, they both played a great game for T&H. Unfortunately for them Joey banged up his knee during the game and they were only six; it did hurt them during the second half. Our defence played great in key moments, we stopped them when we needed to. We got the ball back with 4 plays left in the game and we managed to move up the field. With two plays left in the game, Zacharie rushed for a touchdown to put us in front by 1 on a great scramble. Both sides of the ball were clutch when needed.

  1. Now 2-0, do you consider yourselves one of the teams to beat in the division? Who do you see as your biggest competition?

Honestly, I have no clue if we are a team to beat in the division and who our biggest competition is. What I know is that we have a lot of young guys that can ball on that team and that we will show up every week to compete and get away with that W.

5B

Takeover – Vincent Benjamin – 8 catches, 123 yards, 2 TDs, 3 Tackles

Takeover – Ian Einheiber – 18/25 – 203 yards, 5 TDs

  1. What was working so well between the two of you this week? Did you guys work out a deal to get more targets than Will?

Many people don’t know this, but Will is a huge diva who always demands the ball in the huddle. Sometimes we have to punish him by throwing the ball elsewhere. This was a perfect example.

  1. What is it going to take to get Takeover their first championship?

A full team effort. Ian is a very meh quarterback who needs exceptional talent around him and a strong defense to succeed. We believe our defense is the strongest it’s ever been, especially with the addition of Chris Brockwell.

  1. Do either of you have funny/embarassing stories about the other that you can share with us? Or maybe about a different member of your team?

Just this week, we have all been making fun of VB in our team picture. At first we were embarrassed for him and told him he needs to catch up on some sleep. But if you look closely, lower in the picture, we realized we were the ones who got got. Look if you dare!

The Process – Andrew Langburt – 11/19, 167 yards, 5 TDs, 6 tackles, 1 INT

The Process – Justin Frankel – 6 Sacks

  1. In both of your opinions, who was more instrumental in the win – the QB play of Andrew or Justin’s 6 sacks?

Sacks, no doubt. Way tougher to get 6 sacks than 5 throwing TDs, almost broke the single game record!

  1. What makes you guys so tough to play against and who do you see as your biggest challenges during the season?

Even though I’m (Andrew) new to the team, we already play very well together on D and have good chemistry. Every team we play is tough because we expect to get their best and there are no easy games even though the score may indicate that sometimes.

  1. Is Andrew the only one who gets to watch the tapes after your games or do you guys have mid-week meetings?

We have weekly 3 hour practices with 1 hour of watching and studying tapes, with a quiz given by Andrew at the end

Sterdam – Gabriel Poisson – 7 catches, 97 yards, 1 TD, 2 tackles, 2 INTs, 1 PD

  1. You did it all on Monday and in my opinion, you were the reason why your team won the game. What made you so successful?

It was more of a team effort. We made clutch plays when we had to. Like our qb Massimo who has no previous football experience was throwing darts and rushed the whole field for a td that put momentum on our side. Also Will Tremblay made the game winning catch. What made us successful were our adjustments we made during the game being competitive until the final drive.

  1. If you had to compare yourself to a player in the NFL, who would it be?

Probably Tarik Cohen or Doug Baldwin. I like the quick “gimmicky” players.

  1. Heard some of the guys call you fish, which isn’t all that surprising. Do you have any other nicknames that you either like or dislike?

No not really. Fish sometimes fish filet are the usual nicknames
