Down goes the Greendale Human Beings; Down goes the Greendale Human Beings !!!!

Welcome to Week 6 of the FlagPlus Football Division E Spring Season. The second half of the season is here, and it kicked off with a bang Tuesday night in Brossard, as the Greendale Human Beings, were knocked off 37-36 by Los Avocados, in a fantastic contest that could be considered for game of the year.

 

The game was highlighted by the play of both Quarterbacks, as each passer brought their A game, as Danny Aylward (GHB), and Josh Vasquez (LA), combined to throw for 451 yards and 11 touchdowns.

 

Another player who stood out, was Samuel Damours. The sophomore Wide Receiver, had a team-high 6 catches for 93 yards and 3 touchdowns, and came up with big catches when his team needed it. Damours, was a monster on the other side of the ball too, as he picked up 3 sacks.

 

Not to be outdone, GHB, got a huge performance out of Daron Migdesyan, as the FPF veteran had 4 receptions for 50 yards, and a team-leading 3 TDs of his own.

 

Not taking anything away from the stellar football that was played by both sides, but as we have seen throughout the years here in FPF, the game came down to conversions. Los Avocados, converted one more than their opponents, and that played a huge role in the outcome.

 

The loss for GHB was two-fold, in that not only was it the first defeat of the year for the team, (their first since Week 6 of the Winter Season) but the sense of invincibility surrounding the team going back to last year, is now gone.

 

Going forward, the team has two options. They can respond and show the rest of the division that the loss was just a small bump in the road, or it can be the sign of things to come for a squad that while having a near perfect record, has been a few too many close games this season. Time will tell.

 

For Los Avocados, besides getting a valuable 2 points, after weeks of beating weaker teams, but falling short against the upper echelon squads, they sent a message to all the critics including yours truly, by knocking off the class of the division, and finally performing as the talent they have on their roster suggests they should.

 

Another great game taking place this week was Prime Time versus Moss City.

 

This contest was filled with big plays and stud performances from both teams.

 

After an explosive first half that saw Moss City lead 19-18, the team was able to increase their lead to 25-18, after a 2-yard TD by Benjamin De Tilly.

 

Prime Time, found themselves back in scoring position after a 22-yard gain by Wide Receiver Vincent Blondin, on a drag route, and a key 3rd down scramble by QB Stephen Harripersaud. Blondin, would score on a 4-yard TD, to make it 25-24 Moss City.

 

A few plays later, in what had to be a candidate for touchdown of the year, Moss City’s Victor Rifiorati, deked out 4 defenders on the way to the end zone for a 34-yard TD, to extend his team’s lead to 32-24. The fourth-year WR spun the ball on the ground after the play earning an Objectionable Conduct penalty (OC), but I’m not going to hold that against him, cause the play was amazing.

 

As you can imagine, just two plays later, Prime Time struck again, as Harripersaud, connected on a seam route to Josh Levine, for a 28-yard TD. The pass and the route was a thing of beauty, as the ball seemingly had eyes, as it came down over the outstretched hands of two defenders, who Levine had split to get open. After missing the 2-point convert, Moss City held a 32-30 lead.

 

Prime Time was able to force a turnover on downs on Moss City’s next offensive possession. PT marched up the field, with an array of dink and dunk passes to the underrated and extremely athletic Shyanne Stewart, who had a great first half, that was highlighted by 2 TDs.

 

Now in the red zone, the team had 4 chances to punch the ball in, and take their first lead of the game. After a short completion to the two yard line, the team failed to connect on two other passes. Now facing 4th down with the game on the line, Harripersaud, looked to throw a quick hitter to his slot receiver, but the rush was right in his face, and the QB had to get rid of the ball quickly, but the pass was batted down by a defender. It appeared that contact was made with the pivot as he threw, but the refs, who had been letting the two teams play all night long, made no call on the play.

 

The nail in the Prime Time coffin came one play later, as Bruno Provencher, who had a monster of a game with 7 receptions for 115 yards and 3 touchdowns, scored a 40-yard TD on a go route down the right sideline. Final score, 39-30 Moss City.

 

Don’t look now, but the Raccoons have won two in a row, and have really turned their season around thanks to their defense. One week after blowing out the Montreal Raiders 30-6, the boys in blue, knocked off Here For The Beer 18-12.

 

What was really noteworthy about their victory, was not only did they shut their opponents out in the first half, but Raccoons Quarterback Étienne Clément, only completed 6 of 18 passes. It does help however, that 4 of those throws went to WR Sébastien Landry, who had a game-high and career-high 4 catches for 106 yards, and 2 TDs.

 

With a matchup against an up and down Sons of Mitches squad Tuesday night in Brossard, the Raccoons have a good chance at making it 3 wins in a row.

 

After I called them out on the podcast 2 weeks ago, the Little Giants responded with a hard-fought, much-needed victory over Sons of Mitches. Helping out LG’S cause, was the addition of two-way threat Dean Demetriou. The 13-year vet, had an impact on both sides of the ball, as he recorded a touchdown on offense, and an INT on the other side.

 

I’ve played against Demetriou before, he is a difference-maker, and if he is here to stay with his new team, the Little Giants, have a chance to be dangerous once again.

 

Random Thoughts

 

Speaking of getting called out, I was called out by FACE Jazz this past week during their game against DGC, for always picking against them. As I always say, I like it when teams prove me wrong, and they did just that, as they dominated their opponents via an 18-6 victory, that wasn’t even that close.

 

Helping out their cause, was the play of Quarterback Azeem Bailey. The Wide Receiver/Defensive Back was filling in for an injured Eddy Rousseau, who was out with a back injury.

 

Bailey, was far from phenomenal with his arm, as he only completed 4 of 23 passes for 42 yards, with 1 TD, and 2 INTs, (his targets did drop a few passes) but he was ridiculous with his legs, as he ran 5 times for 101 yards and a TD.

 

It’ll be interesting to see if what the team decides to do at the QB position once Rousseau returns, given that he can also play receiver, as he does in higher divisions.

 

What is happening to the Pardon My Swag offense? While I understand missing Quarterback Avery Lalla hurts, backup QB Jesse Racine is more than capable of leading the offense, as he proved in the Winter Season. Even when the young gunslinger is in the lineup, the team has still struggled as of late.

 

In the last three games with both QBs, the team has scored a total of 32 Points. While I’ll never be accused of being a mathematician, that averages out to 10 points a game. Yes, Pardon My Swag has faced some tough teams in the Smokin Axolotls, Hot Boys Hotline, and Dirty Mike n the Boys during that stretch, but a roster that includes vets like Brad Evans, Pat Deschenes, and both Brandon and Myles Keiller, should be better than this, no matter who is throwing the ball.

 

Forfeits are lame, and a huge waste of everyone’s time, effort, and money. Dirty Mike n the Boys had to suffer through it this week, as their opponents, Friday Night Tykes, bailed on the game. I understand early games during the week are hard to get to because of traffic, and summer time availability is sometimes a little tricky, but there’s a reason the schedule comes out as early as it does, teams should plan ahead.

 

Two teams that had me jumping on their bandwagon due to their solid play of late, was the Farmers, and The Expendables. It looks like I might have to pump the brakes a little bit.

 

The Farmers, who looked impressive in knocking off two heavyweights in Los Avocados, and Dirty Mike n the Boys over the last 2 weeks, had a chance for a third big win, as they took on the Homosapiens, Monday night at Kirkland.

 

The fact that the Homosapiens, were without starting Quarterback François Deslauriers, made it appear that the Farmers would be victorious for sure. As we have seen throughout the history of FPF, and football for that matter, the games have to be played to determine a winner.

 

Stepping in for Deslauriers at Quarterback, was Wide Receiver Tristan Hetu-Frankel. The rookie, who is having a solid year at WR, with 141 yards and 5 touchdowns, made a seamless transition to his new position, as threw for 5 TDs, on 17 of 28 passing for 179 yards, and led his team to a 33-22 win.

 

On the other side, Benoit Robidoux, and his team played like the Farmers of old, as they struggled to move the ball offensively, except for some garbage time TDs, (thrown by backup QB Jonathan Legault) and they could barely get any stops on defense. Robidoux, had his worst outing of the season, as he went 4 of 11 for 35 yards and 3 interceptions.

 

Let’s see how the team responds tonight against Here For The Beer.

 

Coming into their game versus YAMAJO, The Expendables, we’re riding a 2-game winning streak, after beating the Montreal Raiders, and Little Giants, while their opponents were coming off of a 34-20 loss to Prime Time.

 

Once again, this is why we play the game. The YAMAJO offense struck quickly, as Quarterback Terrence Dobson, connected with receivers Anton Sakiz, and Jack Antaki for touchdowns.

YAMAJO, used a strong defensive effort to shut their opponents out in the second half. Really shinning in the effort was Sakiz, and Antaki, who had a game-high 5 tackles and 2 INTs respectively. As a whole, the team picked off The Expendables QB David Roaldi 4 times, and limited him to 9 completions.

 

Up next for YAMAJO station, is a tough matchup with Dirty Mike n the Boys Tuesday night in Brossard.

 

For The Expendables, they will look to get up and dust themselves off, as they face Friday Night Tykes tonight in Lachine.

 

Throughout the season, I have talked about a lot of the young Quarterbacks in Division E, who have been impressive, and have the potential to eventually become the faces of the position in FPF. After watching him play this past week, I want to add Andrew Farrier of Moss City to the list. His performance against Prime Time was stellar. I stood on the sideline the entire game, and came away with the feeling that I was watching a much higher division QB.

 

 

While being able to throw an accurate deep ball is the basic prerequisite to playing the position properly (and he did that with ease), Farrier, showed touch on the ball, the dexterity to throw on the run, the ability to throw receivers open, and the extremely underrated know-how to take what the opposing defense is giving him.

 

In three games so far this season, the rookie has 14 touchdowns, 532 yards, and has averaged a shade under 13 yards a pass.

 

In all honesty, I have only seen Farrier throw once this season, so I will have to obviously see him again, but his first impression was definitely a good one.

 

 

Elite 8

 

1. Greendale Human Beings – Sons I guess they won’t be going undefeated. They have another HUGE test tonight against the Smokin Axolotls. Another loss will see them slide down the standings. Last Week: 1

 

2. TBA – They smashed the SPARTANS, and if the Smokin A’s can knock off the Greendale Human Beings, TBA will find themselves at the top of the list. Last Week: 5th

 

3. Los Avocados – Another win over the class of the division sees them climb 4 spots this week. After an emotional win over GHB, let’s see what Josh Vasquez’s team has left in the tank against a Fourth & Twenty team who looked dominant last week. Last Week: 7th

 

4. Hot Boys Hotline – By hook or by crook, and the aid of multiple OC’s, They Beat The West Delisle Squad 7-6. Still the sin was far from impressive, and it causes them to drop a spot in the rankings. HBH, catches a break in the schedule this week when they take on the Montreal Raiders. Will their offense show up this week? Last Week: 3rd

 

5. Dirty Mike n the Boys – Winning by forfeit isn’t their fault, but their loss to The Farmers the week before can’t go unnoticed. Last Week: 2nd

 

6. Homosapiens – As mentioned above, they picked up a big win over the Farmers. The fact that it was without their starting Quarterback François Deslauriers, makes the win stand out even more. A suddenly improved Little Giants team awaits them tonight at Stade de Montreal. This will be a telling game for both teams. Last Week: N/R

 

7. Farmers – As mentioned above they are coming off of a tough loss to the Homosapiens. Their matchup tonight against Here For The Beer, begins a four game stretch against some of the division’s weaker teams. The Farmers, will be expected to dominate the rest of the way if they want to be viewed as a serious playoff threat. Last Week: N/R

 

8. Moss City – This past week, they showed that they have an offense to go along with their 4th ranked defense (they are tied with FACE Jazz). The schedule Gods strike yet again, as both teams square off tomorrow at Stade de Montreal. A win for either team would be huge. Last Week: N/R
