FPF Co-Ed Week 3 Recap: QBs Dish Out their Turnover Recipes

I may or may not be in the mood for some apple turnovers, and that may or may not have influenced the title of this week’s article. To link that to this week’s games, I will tell you the following: QBs combined for 12 INTs in Co-Ed on Saturday. That’s a lot of turnovers. A dozen, in fact…just like the number of doughnuts you get in a box… I should really eat before writing these things.

Party Time

If Saturday’s 52-6 drubbing of Flamboyant Dragons is any indication, I’m going to need to find some better Party Mix-related puns from here on out.

As much of a bad omen the Dragons’ 33-0 loss to It’s a Match in Week 1 was, I can’t say I predicted such an utterly lopsided game in Week 2 – especially against a Party Mix team coming off their own disappointing loss.

But from the game’s first play – an interception thrown by Dragons QB Guillaume Fontaine – you could tell what kind of night it was going to be for each team.

Backed by a defense which ended up picking off Fontaine five more times on the night, it was pretty relaxed evening for QB François Deslauriers. Deslauriers himself did his part to make sure his offense rolled smoothly, as he did what he of all people should know tends to work best in FPF: hitting your center on a checkdown and letting them do the rest. The result was a six-catch haul for Audrey Le Templier, who took those passes 75 yards down the field and scored twice.

Meanwhile, the only bright spot on an offensive attack stuck in neutral all night was a long TD catch by receiver Etienne Lalancette. I mean, I guess that’s still progress after being shutout the week earlier… right?

Birried

Like buried; get it? No? Yes but you think it’s awful and I should do way better next week? Well you’re in luck: if Vanessa Birri keeps slinging the ball the way she did over the weekend, I’m sure I’ll get plenty more opportunities to redeem myself.

To be fair to It’s a Match, this one was one hell of a fight. And that’s despite Match making the curious decision to replace Alexis Labonté with François Éthier at QB. As the 19-6 scoreline suggests, things went sideways pretty quickly for them.

Match started the game off with a punt, to which Confirmed Postive responded by capping off a long drive with a TD connection from Birri to Pat Jérome.

Things went from bad to worse for Match when just seconds later Labonté, freshly moved to the receiver position, dropped a pass that ended up right into Marc Lachapelle’s lap. Next thing you know, it’s 13-0 at the half.

An INT by Labonté on a great read to start the second half gave hope for a Match comeback when it led to an easy TD reception by Félix Gilardeau, then was followed up by a big defensive stand on 4th down on the ensuing drive.

But with an offense still unable to move the ball, it was clear by then that this one was Confirmed Positive’s game all the way.

Top 5

  1. Confirmed Positive (2-0): It wasn’t Birri’s best night – two INTs and a bunch of overthrows that could easily been completed for six. The fact she still racked up 227 yards passing and 3 TDs makes this win that much more impressive. Also, hello there, Mat René. Also also, I nominate Guillaume Fillion’s TD catch, in which he did his best Martellus Bennett impression, for Top 3 catches of this Co-Ed season. Yes, I’m aware that it’s only Week 3. But look at this catch. LOOK AT IT. And then imagine it taking place on an FPF field. That was Fillion on Saturday. Okay, maybe Fillion didn’t have a DB draped all over him for his own catch, but still: #Ballin.
  1. It’s a Match (2-1): This defense? Solid. This offense led by QB François Éthier? Could use some work. Given the fact that Éthier’s last season as a full-time QB saw him go 33:18 in the TD-to-INT department back in Winter 2015, I’ll chalk this 1:4 performance up to rust.
  1. Served With Girls (1-1): How was that bye week, boys and gals?
  1. Party Mix (1-2): They didn’t exactly play the cream of the crop, but putting up a 50-burger will never not be impressive.
  1. Flamboyant Dragons (0-2): Still no offense, still no defense, still at the bottom of the power rankings.
