Upsets affect do or die Week 10
After 9 long and grueling weeks, the last week of the regular season is here and the playoffs are within arm’s reach.
Before we get into the second season, there were a lot of big games and huge results that affected the playoff dreams and seedings of a lot of teams.
The Fuzzy-Kittens pulled off a big upset with their 18-12 win over TDs and Beer. Besides the Bloodmachines, has anybody fallen as hard as this squad the last few weeks? Honestly, these guys are extremely lucky that firstly, that this is the end of the regular season. Secondly, that all of the teams that are trailing them in the playoff race are below .500. They still have a chance to change their fortunes, but right now they have one and done written all over them.
The Fat and The Furious shocked the FPF world with a shocking 41-22 blowout win over the Falcons. Props to FF QB Bobby Sepentgis who not only had a strong game behind center throwing for 177 yards and 5 TDs, but he also added an interception on Defense.
A tale of two halves was the story behind the JeanGuy/#Baton contest. After jumping out to a 12-0 half-time lead behind the combination of QB Emile Lamy and WR Paul Savaria who connected 7 times for 127 yards and 2 TDs.
The second half was a completely different story as JeanGuy couldn’t get into the end-zone. The opposite was true for #Baton as they exploded to score quickly with three 2nd half TDs after being shutout themselves in the 1st stanza.
There are two big questions that come out of this one. The first is how will #Baton QB Jason Dupuis respond after going through his first rough outing since taking over the position for the team a month ago?
The second question is after getting shut out for only the 2nd time this season (Week 6 vs FOTC was the other) how pissed off is Simon Laporte, and how many sacks will he get this week?
Royalty vs Been There Done That will have huge post-season implications as well. Royalty, who lost their Week 6 game to the Big Blue Wrecking Crew 30-12, currently sit two points up on them for the 8th and final playoff spot in Conference B. If the BBWC can pull off the massive upset over Los Guapos on Tuesday night (watch out for a potential LG resting their players before the playoffs cause they have nothing to play for scenario) and Royalty loses, Royalty would be out.
Speaking of Royalty, they came within a safety and some missed converts by Mile Public House from being knocked by the winless crew. Full credit to MPH for almost scoring the upset. Keep fighting boys, it’ll help you out in the future.
The end of the regular season is ALWAYS exciting!!!!
High Five
The Fat and The Furious – I definitely picked these guys to lose last week. They definitely proved me wrong. Good job boys.
Bobby Sepentgis (The Fat and The Furious) – As I mentioned before, the QB had a great game on both sides of the field, and was a really a contributing factor in his team’s upset victory over the Falcons.
Chris Fields (no name@) – The Wide Receiver had an amazing performance as he lit up the Smokin’ Axolotls’ Defensive Backs to the tune of 8 receptions for 108 yards and 4 TDs.
Naim Goulamhoussen (#Baton) – As I said earlier in the season, it’s not often an opposing rusher out-rushes Simon Laporte. When it happens as it did Monday night, the person deserves a spot on the list.
Mike Harper (Fuzzy-Kittens) – The FPF rookie had 4 INTs versus TDs and Beer, and held their top WR and future All-Star Isiah Allard relatively in check. What else is there to say?
Step It Up
The Redmen Offense – I’m honestly not sure what to make of these guys. One week they put up 30 points against a team with good defensive players like Dangerous Danny D’Amour, Alex Grey, and my main man Justin Occhionero. A week later they almost do it again as they dropped 27 against a really good defensive team in TDs and Beer. Then this past week despite all the playmakers they have on O especially in QB John Papadimitriou and WR Zach Zwirn, they stalled against the Looney Goons. I completely understand that LG has a nice defense too, but you know what they say about big players in big games…
Myles Keiller (TDs and Beer) – They needed a win probably more than anybody last week. Losers of two straight coming into last week, and with their status as an elite team all but slipping away, TDs and Beer QB Myles Keiller had the type of performance that extended the losing streak to 3 games. Going 16 of 35 for 153 2 TDs and 5 INTs is not going to get it done especially in what was a huge game not only in the standings, but for the team’s confidence.
One Man Show Offense – Coming into last’s week’s game against the Tigers, the Tigers had given up at least 30 points in 3 out of their last 4 games. One would expect a team that is led by Dangerous Danny D’Amour (who only has 2 receptions), and other weapons as well, most notably an experienced big-game QB in Jordan Bellemare, to be able to at least match that total. This past Tuesday night, One Man Show not only fell short of that total, but they also lost the game. Bellemare didn’t play horribly at all, but he and his Offense didn’t really make that many big plays either. I expect better out of these guys.
Elite 8
Los Guapos – A week after taking the over the number 1 spot, Los Guapos came out as expected and laid a beating on Been There Done That to solidify their position. They finish off the regular season by taking on the Big Blue Wrecking Crew.
Flight of the Conchords –Another week, another impressive win for arguably the best Offensive team in Div. E. The veteran squad has closes out against the Bloodmachines. As little as two weeks ago this had all the makings of a Conference B championship preview. The continued slide of Jean Christophe’s team, has taken some of the shine off of this one.
Smash Bros – Since their heart-breaking 32-30 loss to Los Guapos in Week 4, the Smash Bros have reeled off 5 straight wins. There’s no reason why they shouldn’t be able to make it 6 against JeanGuy.
No Name – After losing to the Looney Goons 2 weeks ago, no name got back on the horse and settled themselves down Sunday night as they easily took care of business against the Smokin’ Axolotls. The 38-19 win was impressive as this matchup was essentially over by halftime.
Looney Goons – The good times keep on rolling for the Looney Goons. Winners of 5 straight, they have a very important game against a suddenly improving Fuzzy Kittens team. If the Goons can get the victory, and with a little help from the Tigers, and a Smokin’ Axolotls/Redmen tie, LG could end up with the 3rd seed in Conference A.
#Baton – They have gone undefeated since Week 6. Due to that streak, they have guaranteed themselves a playoff spot. Things get a little tricky though for #Baton. They can finish as low as 8th (if they lose and Royalty and/or JeanGuy win), stay right where they are at 6th (if they win and Been There Does That does the same), or they can move up to 5th (If they win and BTDT losses, but because of their Week 6 24-24 tie with each other, and due to the fact that their Divisional records are both 3-4-1, #Baton will need to get the W and finish the regular season with more points scored then the aforementioned team. Right now, they are exactly 7 points behind.
Bloodmachines – Has any team fallen further then these guys? Once the best team in Div. E, these guys have dropped to the middle of the pack. There are at least 5 teams who I would put money on to go against these guys if I were a betting man of course.
Falcons – Yes they suffered an embarrassing loss at the hands of a previously 1-win The Fat and The Furious squad, but I can’t ignore the 13 points and 2nd place spot that they currently occupy in Conference A.
Picks
Redmen – Smokin’ Axolotls – I like the Smokin’ Axolotls to rebound in this one and head into the playoffs on the right note.
Fuzzy-Kittens – Looney Goons (My pick for game for the week) – Like I mentioned earlier, the Fuzzy-Kittens have been playing some good football 3 out of the last 4 weeks. I’m tempted to pick them here, especially if Los Guapos rests their guys, but I’m still inclined to go with the favourites in this one. Loosely…
Tigers – TDs and Beer – Watching them play, it appears that TDs and Beer have peaked. The Tigers rode a strong defensive performance to victory. I think they make it 2 in a row to close out the regular season against a floundering opponent.
Bloodmachines – Flight of the Conchords – The bad play calling on Offense and the losing streak continue for the Bloodmachines.
No name© – Falcons – This team has been almost as impressive as Los Guapos as they have won 7 out of their last 8 games. Their Defense led by Rob White is too good to let just Zach Zwirn beat them.
Smash Bros – JeanGuy – Despite the Simon Laporte effect, the Smash Bros are just too good.
Been There Done That – Royalty – They need to win to get in. I think they’ll do it.
The Fat and the Furious – One Man Show – In the winter season, One Man Show known as Wax On Wax Off almost always found a way to pull one out when their backs were against the wall. I think they do it one more time, despite The Fat and The Furious impressive performance last week.
Big Blue Wrecking Crew – Los Guapos – Los Guapos can’t be stopped right now.
Mile Public House – #Baton – Mile Public House delivered on my promise of last week game versus Royalty being a good one. A costly safety and missed converts were the difference between them defeat and them getting their first W of the season. Sorry boys, but I think that donut stays in the win column.
Last Week: 7-3 (for the second week in a row)
Season: 58-20-1
