Peeze’s Playbook (Div.E) Week 4

Today was a day where I updated my CV.  I’m not currently looking for employment but, rather it just seemed like time to update my CV.  It became apparent to me as I was listing career accomplishments that it closely paralleled an FPF season.  A team’s record is their CV.  As analysts we judge how many wins a team has and against who. This is similar to a potential employer looking at and scrutinizing a candidate’s work history.

Teams, we are watching you.  So are your enemies.  If you want to scare off potential candidates and other suitors to the trophy it is time to start putting up wins and statement wins at that.  Start to fill their eyes with terror so that when the time comes to face them in the playoffs you’ve already won the battle.  This is week 5 gentlemen; it’s time to get serious!

Just Enough TDs, Hopefully many More Beers

Since Brad Evans has returned to his throne as the QB of TDs and Beer, the offence has struggled, yet they are now 2-0 in the past two weeks.  This game followed a similar script as the previous games.  Brad Evans avoided mistakes and trusted his defense to win the game.  Overall there weren’t many standout plays; rather it was just a great team effort to shut down the Jean Guy offence. They held quarterback Christophe Chartrand to 68 yards passing and Isiah Allard was able to sack him 3 times.  O his end, Evans was able to avoid the big mistake and convert on one more extra point and Beer and TDs pull away with the victory.

Other than their week 1 explosion against the brand new Hangar Crossfit, Jean Guy’s offense has scored no more or less than 2 touchdowns in any of their following games.  This game seemed to fit that mold as Chartrand struggled to move the ball down the field.  I have said many times that if you cannot consistently score 5 touchdowns a game you will not be effective down the road.  Now, much like TDs and Beer, Jean Guy played a strong defensive game. Antoine Daudelin-Larose was all over the field as he recorded 6 tackles in this game.  Jean Guy’s defense has looked solid all season, but now the offense needs to keep pace in order for Jean Guy to start competing.  For now they fall to 1-3 as they lose a close one to TDs and Beer by a score of 13-12.

Junkyard Dogs Left Hairless

Junk Yard Dogs were expected to be one of the strongest teams coming into the season.  That being said Jason Rossie has not taken the steps that we

Wax On, Wax Off went with a rusher by committee philosophy in this game and it was very effective.  Justin Santillo recorded 3 sacks while Graham Velenosi recorded another.  On the offensive side of the ball the connection between David Daoust and Normand Bellemare has developed quickly.  Daoust caught 5 passes for 32 yards and 3 touchdowns and is starting to establish himself as the team’s top redzone threat.  The wrap on WOWO was that if you could take away Danny D’Amour you should be able to get the win.  With the addition of David Daoust Wax on Wax Off look primed for success.  They win this game 21-0.

n.W.o Prove to be Fresh Princes

With n.W.o leading late Fresh MTL had the ball with a chance to win.  Terry Tam put the ball up to Bradley Augustin who went up for the ball but came down without it.  Fresh MTL played a tight competitive game but would come up just short and lose the game 24-20.  Tam spread the ball well as 5 receivers had multiple catches and no one receiver had more than 3. Overall, it was a strong team effort but Fresh MTL would fall just short (which is fitting, cause Terry’s short).

Michael Sanchez looks determined to prove me wrong.  Each time NWO loses a game, I say that they need to start to adopt a more conventional offense.  Then they turn around and win the next week using the same gimmick offence that I criticized the week before.  Sanchez controlled the pace of the game and avoided catastrophe.  Given this team’s style, this is all Sanchez had to do in this one.  Star acquisition Erminio Iadeluca was the standout in this one as he caught 2 touchdowns and added an interception on the other side of the ball as well.  N.W.O have yet to find some consistency, so let’s hope that this is the start of something beautiful.

5 plays Till Half Time

The Eagle at Master Control is taking longer and longer to submit these questions to me (hence the delays in my article).  However, I must say, the questions seem to be improving on a weekly basis.  That being said if you want to do your part continuously tweet #5Plays @EagleFPF to guilt him into doing his job!  Here are his questions; here are my answers:

Eagle- We hear a lot of talk about clock management when watching NFL football.  How important is managing the clock in FPF?

Peeze- This is a huge factor in deciding games.  Firstly, proper time management will allow teams to control the pace of the game.  If you are a slow plodding team, use up as much clock as possible so as to slow the game to a crawl.  If you are a quick strike team then you need to get in as many plays as possible.  Also, as one watches higher divisions they will notice that it takes less time to communicate the plays to the receivers, thus giving the QB more time to read the defense at the line of scrimmage.  Finally, managing the cloxck well means knowing how manage the last 10 minutes of the game, whether you are up or down.  Remember that the clock is always ticking and that you may need to use your timeouts late in a game so make sure you don’t blow them on stupidities.  Please remember to use them.  I have seen teams loe by a score and never use their timeouts.  Seriously guys, you can’t  trade them for beers after the game.

Eagle- Is there a rule that you see a lot Div.E teams get penalized for?

Peeze-  Interference with the rusher.  Guys, I’m a snapper in my other team.  I am overweight and the slowest player in the history of the league.  I haven’t been penalized for this since my first season when I thought we were allowed to block!  Be conscious of where the rusher is.  Now how to adapt your routes and get the hell out of the way! If thwere are any doubts think of the famous Ludacris song.

Eagle-Are there any frontrunners for any awards or are any awards to close to call at this point?

Peeze- All the award races seem close.  That being said, there are some leaders at the moment but we will discuss them next week on Flag Plus Bromance.  You figure the producer of the show would know what we have set up for future shows but the reality is, that we do not listen to him nor do we invite him to production meetings.  Basically, we keep him around so that I will never be the least likeable member of the media.  So in short, tune into Flag Plus Bromance this week and Terry and I will break down the cold war we all refer to as the awards race. We’ll probably make up some awards too so look out for the expected winner of the most photogenic player.

Eagle- While watching other Div.E games, have you seen any sloppy route running? Any advice you can give receivers to polish their routes?

Peeze- Thank you for asking this one.  The route running is one aspect of lower division flag football that I have trouble watching.  I love the enthusiasm, the effort, the wicked jerseys and insane personalities.  The route running however lacks a lot t be desired.

Firstly, all of your routes should look identical.  Never cheat by looking where you will cut or by turning part of your body early.  Next, you should run all of your routes and every part of your route at full speed.  Dogging it until your cut doesn’t actually create separation, it decreases the amount of separation you can get by running at full speed. Also, run your routes to completion even if you are on the backside.  There is no excuse for being lazy.  You don’t necessarily understand the play concept the same way the quarterback does.  For someone to get open everyone needs to do their job. Next, chop with your hands as you are running.  This way your hands are always up and ready to receive a pass throughout the route. Here’s a helpful video that proves that I know what I’m talking about:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5c2zYyQmzv4

*I have used this video to trainmany receivers who have never played football before.  One won two way player of the year in his first season, another is leading div.e in receptions at the moment and countless others are making an impact throughout FPF despite having no prior football experience. Route Running is not fun, it’s not exciting, it is a commitment however.  If you are ready to start getting open, start working on your technique.

Eagle-Who has the best team pic and why?

Peeze-My favorite has to be DX’s because there aren’t enough players in the photo to field a team.  I like small rosters but come on guys!

Reflections, Rants and Ravings:

  • GOTW turned out to be one of the worst games on the weekend.  Interestingly, The mige are not known for putting up a lot of points.  Perhaps they are starting to turn some heads.
  • The playoff breakdown for each division has been posted.  For Division E, the top 6 in each conference will make it to the dance and the top two teams will have a bye.
  • I am a true believer that you get what you pay for.  Coffee is perhaps the truest indicator.
  • The award for sweatiest team pic goes to Old Guns.  Yup, it’s absolutely disgusting.
  • Only one quarterback has broken the 200 yard mark so far this season.  Congratulations Jeff Rosenblatt of The Minge.
  • Jason Rossie has run for 118 more yards than any other player this season.  Considering that the lower divisions are known for having running and unorthodox quarterbacks it would seem that quarterbacks seem to be more intent on running conventional offences.
  • Candy Crush is an insult to the colorblind.  That is all.
  • Next week I’ll be writing a mid-season breakdown of all 18 teams.  I hate writing it, you love reading it.  Guess who the league wants to keep happy.
  • Racoons like Candy…who knew?

Power Rankings

  1.  DG Goons (4-0)- Still 4-0 but did not look dominant against a winless team in week 4. Let’s just call it an off night.
  2.  Cream Team-Since their first loss of the season, they have been annihilating everyone. It’s as if Godzilla impregnated the State Puff Marshmallow Man and this is what we’re left with!  It’s a monster like no other.  Now that I’ve conjured that visual, I think I know where they got the team name.
  3.  The Minge (3-1)- They embarrassed Alcohol of Fame on the closest thing we have to National TV.  The Minge now claim AOF’s previous spot at 3.
  4.  Los Pollos Hermanos (3-1)-  Any team that is as effective as LPH is in the redzone should garner attention.  Luckily for them no one else is as effective.
  5. DX (3-1)- Yup, I’m officially on the bandwagon.  You need to score to win in FPF and while DX doesn’t score a bunch, neither does anyone they play against.
  6. Wax on, Wax Off (3-1)- They haven’t allowed a point in two weeks.  That’s a big deal.  Start paying attention to these boys.
  7.  TDs and Beer (3-1)- This squad doesn’t truly have a statement win just yet.  However, if they go in and beat DX, this will show us that they are as tough as they have seemed in the first 2 weeks
  8. Fresh MTL (2-2)- They lost a game on the last play, I wouldn’t put to much stock into that.  This is probably the toughest team for any to matchup against in Div.E.  If they start to click and execute they will truly be dangerous.

Other Teams Receiving Votes:

I called the Terry Tam for his input and he answered that he was gentleman’s club and was not able to assist me with my article.  Considering it’s a gentleman’s club, there were a lot of women in the background.  To ask him about his whereabouts you can tweet him @TerryTamFPF

-Alcohol of Fame (2-2)- Ok so GOTW was an embarrassment and much like Easter Morning strippers, there are some things that you just can’t un-see. That being said they were missing rusher Malcolm Archer, Bryden Streeter and Alex D’Aquila.  The first two are big pieces on the defense and missing that many starters makes achieving a victory unlikely.

The Pack (2-2)- They have looked average.  I can see this team going exactly .500 on the season unless they turn things around soon.  It would be a shame since I had thought this was a 7 win team.

– Old Guns (2-2)- This is a team filled with talent but mired in inconsistency.  This team’s potential is through the roof.  They need to start showing it every week.

Hung-over Visions of the World of Tomorrow

So here’s the skinny: I fell behind the other guys early and I’ve had to take some risks.  They haven’t panned out so far but it does have me cheering for the underdog which is my favorite kind of canine. We say it all the time, the more picks I get wrong the happier I am because it means that I’m covering an unpredictable division.  That being said, I’m happy enough, come on guys win some games!
