Bombsquad’s Breakdwon (Div 1 & 2) – Week 8

What a week. It was kicked off with a stunning upset.

Countdown to detonation

8. In a crazy upset, the previously skidding Terror Squad, end their losing streak in style taking down the Division 1 Bills 39-26. Terror QB Tam Vilaydeth did it through the air and on the ground as he tossed 4 TD’s, 3 of which went to the main man Pat Jerome- who also had 91 yards, as well as 2 TD’s on the ground as he ran for 40 yards. Jerome also had an interception, as did Sebastien Deschamps. Chad Byers and the Bills just seemed to be missing something on this day. Byers spread the ball around but the turnovers definitely didn’t help the cause. Also the Bills defense didn’t get the stops they needed to stop the bleeding. Huge win for Terror Squad and definitely a huge confidence booster.

7. Montreal’s Finest defeats the Mercenaries in a shootout 47-43. Both QB’s had strong games with 7 TD’s thrown. Carmine Pollice was huge with 9 grabs for 89 yards and 2 TD’s as was Jon Lyristis who had 5 catches for 102 yards and 2 TD’s. But the man with the big hair was a scoring machine on this day for the Finest. Rochdi Benabdelkader had 5 receptions for 101 yards and 4 touchdowns. Big game for Big Hair. The Mercs continue their skid but still look like a strong contender to make the finals.

6. The Express ground the Top Guns 42-19 behind fill in QB Gianni Settino. Settino had 5 TD passes and a lone interception. Jean-Francois Marquis was his main weapon with 3 TD’s and he also had a pick on defense. Mario Porreca had a rough game throwing as many touchdowns as interceptions with 3. The usual faces hit the end zone for the Guns with Nick Gaudreault and the Meshesha twins doing the scoring. But the Express were just too much for the D2 squad on this day.

5. Purple Haze narrowly defeat the Ducks 37-34. The Rick Nincheri, Robbie Robinson combo once again ruled the day with a 4 TD performance, even though Louis Richard is a better receiver and was absent from this game. How much did Robinson bribe Rick to force him the ball? He did have 3 interceptions as well. I guess he will have to thank Ducks QB Manuel Crisi-Lauzon for that as he returned to the lineup with 5 TD’s and 4 INT’s. Sebastien Crisi-Lauzon also returned and had a 4 TD game as well as the sole INT for the Ducks. Just imagine how this game might have played out if the Ducks didn’t turn over the ball so much.

4. The Gladiateurs win a very close battle with the Wolverines 41-40. Both QB’s had stellar games with matching 6 TD games. Tony Tabet used Raffi Bastadjian to the tune of 7 catches for 126 yards and 3 touchdowns. While Francois Lebeau spread the ball around mostly hitting 6 different receivers including Charles Baillargeon 6 times for 76 yards and 2 scores. Again, another game that came down to converts. The Gladiateurs keep to their winning ways and the Wolverines are proving they are not to be ignored.

3. The Wild Boys run Wild over the Div 1 little r thingy team as they defeat TG 58-40. Matt Rene had a monster game against this Div 1 defense. Only 6 incompletions for 296 yards and 8 touchdowns. 117 of those yards and 2 of those touchdowns went to the man named Taffy. Not kidding. Taffy Williams. His hands stuck to the ball pretty well. (Okay that was really corny).  Unfortunately it looks like taffy won’t have enough games to stick around through the playoffs. On defense Frank Bruno was big once again picking off TG fill-in QB Andy Peterkin twice with one going back to the house. Peterkin still had 6 TD’s; three of which went to Stephane Chartrand who also had 110 yards. This was a very forgettable game for the little r boys and it put them in a very tough position with Express as the playoffs loom.

2. The Rainmakers pour on the Wolfpack 47-12. Just another day at the office for Ryan Kastner with 6 TD’s to 5 different receivers including 2 to Michael Samman. On the other side, Pascal Murray had 7 completions to 2 receivers. Alexandre Martin had 100 yards and the only 2 TD’s for the Pack who were dominated. What a bad game. I have nothing else to say.

1. The game of the week went the way I thought it would with Flag Moi L’Sac defeating the Hall of Famers 31-18. The interesting part is L’Sac was without their QB and had Gab Cousineau come in to throw. And he pulled off 5 TD’s with no interceptions. And Felix Provost caught 3 of them for 104 yards. The L’Sac defense was the big difference here picking off Justin Smolar 3 times and limiting him to 3 TD’s, two of which went to Adam Crystal who continues to put up crazy numbers. This is going to be a crazy playoff year.

BOOM!!!

And now for another installment of individual awards.

Div 1

My Golden Boy this week has to be the man of much hair as Rochdi Benabdelkader grabbed 4 TD’s and gained 101 yards against the Mercs. Great job Hair.

My SHOWSTOPPA for Div 1 this week is the entire Rainmakers defense who held the Wolfpack to 7 completions and 12 points for the game. Great team effort.

Div 2

My Golden Boy has to be Matt René who threw 8 touchdowns against their Div 1 opponents and only 6 incompletions.

My SHOWSTOPPA has to be, even though I tried really hard to find a reason not to choose him, Robbie Robinson from Purple Haze who had 3 interceptions in a game which his team won by 3 points. Every possession counts. Good job, Snobby.

The playoffs are so close now; you can taste and feel them. So here is how the playoffs would look if they started this upcoming weekend.

Div 1

Montreal’s Finest versus TG and the little r thingy

The Bills versus the Rainmakers

Div 2

This is a really messed up scenario that I am sure will be fix in the coming years but this is what would happen this year.

East:

Flag Moi L’Sac versus the Hall of Famers

The Gladiateurs versus Purple Haze

West:

The Mercenaries versus the Pantheres

The Wild Boys versus Terror Squad

Now obviously it is very unfortunate that in Division 2 that the East is going to completely cannibalize itself with all the Top teams in Div 2 going through a Death Match to find our East rep for the finals. Just as it is unfortunate that the West is so weak that you wonder if any of the 4 teams would stand a chance against any one of the teams in the East. But please remember, this is why they play the games. Over the years we have seen so many upsets in so many divisions. Any team can step up in the playoffs. So do not judge the format as many have. Rest assured the league always wants to provide the best product for everyone and might change the format next year for crossover games in the playoffs. But until then, let us enjoy the battles and the games that will bring us to the finals where there is always a possibility of an upset.

Let us now take some time to view the upcoming matches that shall grace our fields this St Patrick’s Day weekend. I play on Saturday so do not expect to see me anywhere near a football field on Sunday. Cheers.

In the game of the week, Montreal’s Finest faces the Bills. A rematch of last year’s Div 1 finals. The Bills have just come off a surprising loss to Terror Squad while the Finest are coming off a surprisingly close victory against the Mercenaries. The chances are that this game is going to be a monster shootout between two of the biggest names to QB in FPF. Chad Byers and Kevin Wyeth face off with all their weapons in tow. Question is will either team make a stop? Stop in and see.

In the battle of young teams cutting their teeth we see the Ducks facing off against the Top Guns. Both teams are extremely athletic. They have speed and incredible talent. While I feel that the Top Guns have a slight edge at QB, I feel that the Ducks have the edge in height/size. I really am not sure which way this game will go but I am going to choose the Ducks to win this one after they came close to beating Purple Haze.

The Express fight for their playoff lives against TG and the r thingy. If Express loses this game, they are out of the playoffs. It is that simple. TG is burning from the beat down from the Wild Boys. This game is going to be a battle. I see the talent on both sides. But who will be throwing for Express? I know Paul Lapierre is back for TG but how much St Patty’s parade will Paul partake of? All in all I like both teams’ chances. I honestly am having a problem choosing a winner. I will take TG this week. Both teams want the playoffs bad but I am looking for a big bounce back from that devastating loss that TG had last week.

The Rainmakers will be facing off against the Hall of Famers this week. This will be a very interesting game. Also a great test for the HOF crew to face a great QB like Kastner. I think Smolar will have a good day against the Rainmakers defense. And will the Rainmakers be able to contain Adam Crystal? In the end, I think it will be the Rainmakers offense that will make the biggest difference. Their receivers are a who’s who of names with great hands and very hard to stop. The HOF defense is not ready for this team but I still think it will be a shootout. Take Rainmakers.

For a bonus game this week, I bring you the Gladiateurs and Flag Moi L’Sac who will battle for sole possession of 1st place. These teams are tied at the top of Div 2. Both teams have had amazing seasons and shown time and again why they deserve to be in first. They both only have one loss. Once again I have wondered, as on occasion, I have bumped into the Gladiateurs crew at some drinking establishments. Will they avoid the tasty beverages on this day of festive drinking? I have no idea but I will take Flag Moi L’Sac in this game only because they have defeated 2 division 1 teams to this point and seem able to limit almost any team’s scoring.

That is it for this week’s segment. You can email me at [email protected] or tweet me @DonaldWShepherd with St Pat’s well wishes and coupons for free Guinness, but until then, another week has been defused.
