Recap of Round 1 of Playoffs! Semi-Finals on their way!

It’s the final 4!! Excuse my smaller article, I’ll recap the Quarter Finals in my next article, but the Semi-Finals are around the corner and the playoffs are well underway!!! Life got ahead of me and I missed the Divisional Round of games, but I refuse to miss the Quarter Finals!! For those of you who have been reading since the beginning, I’d like to pat myself on the back and show that my prediction record this season was phenomenal! I was able to finish with my goal of 60 correct predictions with a final score of: 62-22-2. Enough about me though. Let’s return our focus to the action of the Co-ed postseason.

A lot happened in Week 11 of the regular season! SHOW ME YOUR TDZ were able to win their last game of the season over CHEFS BANDITS, in a game I didn’t see coming! LA SECTE pulled the rug out from under KISS MY HUGS!!! Kicking the HUGS out of the playoff running and taking their place as the #12 seed! In my opinion, this was one of the biggest upsets in the entire season, and yes, I’m including the TONIX loss! LES RANCEURS beat up on MEAN MACHINES, giving MICHAEL SCOTT’S TOTS the wiggle room needed to sneak into 4th place and win themselves a bye week! Speaking of the TOTs… They had a phenomenal game where, not only did they get a win over the Undefeated KAMIKAZE, but Jean-Sebastien St-Arneault did the near impossible and tied the All-Time Sack record in the Regular Season at 29 Sacks!

I have to say, for the final week of the season, there were more surprises and amazing endings than I thought possible!! Congratulations once again for everyone who made the playoffs, the first round is in the bag and we can shed some light on what happened in the Divisional Round:

“WHAT’S THE 411 ‘HUN”:

  • The first game to kick off our Playoffs was: WHO’S GONNA CARRY THE BOATS vs LA SECTE. LA SECTE was coming fresh off a win against KISS MY HUGS, and looking to make a mark in the playoffs, while our local BOAT carriers had already cemented their legacy as a top team in the division. WHO’S GONNA CARRY THE BOATS barely missed the ship for a bye week, having finished in the #5 spot, and decided to take their frustrations out on LA SECTE. During the first half, it could have been anyone’s game! An early interception by Clement Billard gave the BOATS the chance needed to set the tone… but after a few bad snaps and some near 4th down turnovers, it was clear that LA SECTE were not going to take this game easy. After the BOATS finally punched it in for a TD, LA SECTE were able to respond in kind and get the 2pt convert needed to take the early lead! Responding in kind – Kayla Gauthier came down with a much needed TD and put up a 2pt convert of their own! Down by a TD, LA SECTE were able to rally together and score the final TD in the half in 5 plays, ending the half at 14-14! If I had to call the game then, I would have put all my stocks in LA SECTE pulling another upset! But, alas, it was not meant to be… Alexandre Szalipszki came out quickly and scored a big 35 yard TD to Clement Billard, putting up another 8pts!! The game went back and forth, with both teams being able to go score for score, until the unthinkable happened – Nicolas Katerelos threw his 2nd INT of the game, this time to Alexandre, and in doing so, helped the BOATs distance themselves with yet another TD. With one last chance, Nicolas hoped for the best, and the chance to use his onside kick to even up the game. Unfortunately, his last pass was an INT and WHO’S GONNA CARRY THE BOATS locked in their spot in the Quarter Finals! Although both teams gave it their all, there can only be 1 winner, and the BOATS go on to face my TOTs on their way to the Finals!

  • At the same time as the above match was happening, LES RANCEURS were taking on LES GRANDS CHUMS! I never counted LES GRANDS CHUMS to be out of this match, but being able to hold Giovani Antonacci to only 2 TDs is definitely more than I expected them to be able to do. Despite Karmina Asharyzad and Vanessa Raposo being targeted a decent amount, it was Kyle Martel who kept his team afloat with 7 receptions and the 2 offensive TDs! The game started a bit rough for the CHUMS, who lost possession of the ball after 4 downs, and gave up a TD early to LES RANCEURS. Tragedy struck again when, after a decent run at the endzone, Christian Otenga was able to Intercept Louis Brassard for a PICK-6! However, the CHUMS decided enough was enough, and threw up a big pass to Thomas Brassard for a 22 yard TD!

It looked like the tides were beginning to turn! LES GRANDS CHUMS were able to make a goal line stop against LES RANCEURS, and regained possession of the ball! Unfortunately, a bad snap would cause a Safety and give RANCEURS 2 pts and possession of the ball… Down 16-6, going into the 2nd half, LES GRANDS CHUMS were unable to maintain their composure, and when Kyle Martel scored his second TD (and the 2nd offensive TD for his team), it spelled defeat for our CHUMS! A big shout out to LES GRANDS CHUMS for giving it their all against a very strong team, and congrats to LES RANCUERS for making it one more round deeper into the playoffs!

  • The #6 seed: MEAN MACHINES took on the #11 seed: CHEFS BANDITS which came down to the wire! Both teams had the chance to give multiple QBs the stage: Christophe Desroches started the game for MEAN MACHINES, but at some point after 2 Interceptions, seemed to have switched to Xavier Parent. On the flip side, CHEFS BANDITS kept Guillaume Girard as their main QB, but used Dimitri Melsbach and Charles Fortin for a few trick plays that all resulted in Touchdowns! Charles Fortin was the only player to both throw a touchdown and catch a touchdown in this game, so congrats to him!

CHEFS BANDITS started the game off with a BANG – Guillaume Girard launched a massive 40 yard Touchdown to Sebastien Simon! MEAN MACHINES were able to respond in kind after driving the field. Things then got serious! Both CHEFS BANDITS and MEAN MACHINES threw interceptions to keep us guessing who would score next, which happened to be CHEFS BANDITS – also scoring their extra point to put them ahead 13-6 going into the half. The roles were reversed in the second half: CHEFS BANDITS could not find purchase enough to score more than 1 TD, and found themselves punting the ball on 4th down, while MEAN MACHINES tried to close the distance by putting up 2 more Touchdowns! However, in the end, it would be the extra points that put this game away! CHEFS BANDITS were able to sneak away with the win, the underdog

  • Last, but definitely not least, is the matchup that occurred between AT LEAST WE TRIED AGAIN and BACK THAT PASS UP! AT LEAST WE TRIED AGAIN have been having a bit of an up and down kind of season. They were one of the top teams for a bit, and then got bullied down to the 8th spot. Their last game of the season was against BACK THAT PASS UP which they only lost by 2 points, so I expected this game to be a real nail biter! Unfortunately, Darryl Drocely had a very hard time in this second meeting of titans, and although he managed to get a rushing TD, he also threw 3 Interceptions, while Jason Rossie had a near perfect game. Unlike some of the other matchups in the first week, this game seemed to be set in stone from the first half – when BACK THAT PASS UP found themselves ahead 30-6 – with the only score for ALWTA was a very impressive 40 yard run by Darryl!

With Jason Rossie on his A-Game, and Justin Gauthier having a perfect game of his own, any team would have struggled against BACK THAT PASS UP. But when Kelly Anania and Chris Brockwell are also patrolling on the defence, you’re gonna have a hard time making progress! Overall, AT LEAST WE TRIED definitely tried their best, but it wouldn’t be enough to stop the lower seed, and BACK THAT PASS UP moves onto the Quarter Finals despite being the lower seed!
