The Girls Are Back For Another Season
Happy Monday to everyone reading this. I hope you had a nice weekend and are enjoying the lovely weather. My name is Lory Ouellette, and I will be covering the women’s articles this season, both Women’s A & B. If you have any concerns, questions, or ideas, feel free to contact me via email at [email protected] or on Instagram @loryouellettee.
Now, let’s dive into the start of this season! With only four teams in Women’s A, the competition will either be very close, or there will be a clear distinction of talent. Meanwhile, Women’s B comprises eight teams and similarly can be a very close season or not for everyone.
Women’s A
With just four teams, each played one game in the first week and already in week 1, we could see which teams are at the top.
Cayenne 39-7 UQTR
A little blowout to start the season anyone? I’m pretty sure this is the same roster as UDEM from last season, with Sandrine Gobeil-Huot as the quarterback. No wonder they have such great chemistry; their performance in the first game was phenomenal. With a completion rate of 20/24, Sandrine’s accuracy is remarkable, and her receivers are reliable. Accumulating 226 yards and 6 touchdowns in the first game is very promising for the rest of the season. I want to emphasize the distribution of throws, and Sandrine is a perfect example, spreading the ball equally among all her receivers is very important and makes it fun for everyone on the team. Of course, Mathilde Renaud receives more targets as she is the snapper, she is always there for Sandrine’s first read if other options are not available. Like most teams, the receiver that gets lots of catches as snappers as they serves as a safety cushion for the quarterback.
Subzero 25-0 Matrix
It seems like the games are becoming too easy for Subzero. Their strong connection and chemistry as a team make them incredibly difficult to play against. After watching a few of their games, I noticed that Sara Parker never seems nervous (or at least she doesn’t show it). She has a lot of trust in her players, but she does have her go-to receivers, especially in red zone plays. Whereas her primary target is likely her snapper, Sarah Cormier, as demonstrated in their first game. Sarah Cormier received a total of 134 yards from 9 receptions, scoring 4 touchdowns and 2 conversions.
Women’s B
In only the first week, some teams haven’t scored on their drives yet. Let’s hope they can build chemistry and put some points on the scoreboard!
Wolfpack 53-12 A-TOWN
While Wolfpack is a team with prior experience in this division, A-TOWN, after a little research, appears to be the D2 team for the cegep of Ahunstic. They’re likely using this opportunity to gain experience before their regular season starts in the fall. Losing their first game doesn’t mean much; they are well-coached, and with time, the players will likely get accustomed to each other and form strong bonds.
For Wolfpack, Camille Dumas is starting off strong with over 200 yards and 6 touchdowns added to her season stats. She has a variety of talents to throw to and make plays. I’ve noticed that all her receivers are getting involved and scoring touchdowns, and their defense is also performing admirably, making multiple pass deflections and even scoring pick-sixes. Hopefully, they can maintain this momentum throughout the season, as their performance in the first game looks promising.
Les Boys 24-0 Wildcats
Perhaps a new team? Honestly, I’ve never seen them play before, so I have no idea what they can bring to the table. However, I’ll be keeping an eye out to see how they perform. They are intriguing as not many people know them; they haven’t been in the league much before, and some of their players are even new to this league. Therefore, being a new team in the league does have its advantages. No one knows how they play, so the other teams won’t have a strategy when facing them. Their unpredictability can catch opponents off guard. Winning their first game 24-0 and preventing Wildcats from scoring any points is impressive. Les Boys’ defense seems to be performing well, making pass deflections, interceptions, and even scoring a pick-six. I hope they maintain this momentum, as I believe they have the potential to exceed expectations, even if other teams underestimate their talent.
Red Nation 20-0 Les P’tites Miettes
Two regular teams returning for another season. It’s interesting that in their first game, Les P’tites Miettes didn’t score any points, despite advancing further into the playoffs than Red Nation last season. Perhaps it wasn’t their best day, but I believe they will bounce back and enjoy this season once again.
As for Red Nation, they have new additions this season such as Keiya Allen-Beckles returning and also adding Noemie Olmand, they also have the same gameplay coming into the season. Allison Sobol is still the quarterback, starting the season strong with over 200 yards and making touchdowns when necessary. She’s also successful in converting, which can be crucial in some games.
