5v5 x Div A: Brossard Blunder, Spearhead Rise from the Dead and Rivals Face Off

And we’re back for Week 5 in Division A and 5v5. Unfortunately we had a couple of games cancelled due to a scheduling error with Complexe CN, which resulted in 2 Div A games getting postponed and 1 5v5 game suffering the same treatment. I’ll have less answers for the questions I raised last week but I’ll have to manage. This means some questions I asked in last week’s article will be pushed for later. Let’s get into it.

Division A questions

  • Can Spearhead bounce back?

Spearhead did everything they had to do defensively and more versus Mangoose as they held them to a ridiculous 6 points. James Ohayon was the best player on the field that night getting 1 interception, bringing it back for 6 and batting down 4 more balls. Sanders Armand was also dominant on the defensive side of the ball and he could have had at least 3 interceptions on Nick Schaefer. It was also a way more convincing performance from Spearhead QB Jeff Rosenblatt who didn’t give anything to the Mangoose defense.

For Mangoose, it was an absolute disaster of a night as Nicolas Schaefer couldn’t get anything going offensively as he only found the end zone once. I knew this was a pretty big jump for the tall and strong-armed QB, and perhaps he had a bit of beginner’s luck to start the season. I’m not too worried about this team as scoring against the Spearhead defense is a tough ask for almost anybody, but they will need to prove that they truly belong in the contender conversation in their upcoming bouts.

Um…yeah so I guess that’s it for Division A.

How will Nicolas Schaefer perform after the loss to Spearhead?

5v5 questions

  • Is AJ Gomes the best player in FPF?

He’s definitely one of the most talented players in the league. He combines elite athleticism with elite skills and only a few players can master both. If he’s not 1 he’s definitely top 3.

  • Was Jules Regimbald‘s performance vs. Party Crashers legit?

It seems that it was as he continued his great performance vs. Party Crashers with another impressive one vs. The Jamesons. Regimbald went 14 for 23, threw 5TDs and did not get picked off by the always solid Jamesons‘ defense.

  • KGP vs. Royaume Luminaire: Can AJ Gomes and Rory Semerjian figure out a way to be effective offensively with Jesse Dupuis at QB? Or will we see Dan Lazzara again?

Result: 42-26 RL

Royaume Luminaire came out with an interesting strategy as we saw both Dupuis and Lazzara playing QB. Lazzara was more successful going 10 of 12 for 145 yards and 4TDs. Dupuis went 3 of 5 throwing for 45 yards and 1TD. So I suppose we will be seeing both quarterbacks the rest of the way with perhaps Lazzara being their best option going forward. The good thing for this little controversy is that Jesse Dupuis is also a very viable option both as a receiver and a defender. As for Gomes and Semerjian, they were both the top 2 players on the Marie-Vic field, with Gomes catching 6 passes for 97 yards and 3TDs, also adding 2INTs (one going back for 6) and a PD on defense. Semerjian was also dominant scoring 2 times with 73 yards on only 3 catches.

It was another disappointing loss for KGP who fell to 0-3 before losing again on Wednesday to end the week on a 0-4 record. Phil Cutler had way more success vs. RL than he did vs. Braves as he was able to move the ball, passing for 252 yards, but his 4TDs and 2 picks still feel disappointing. Julien Paiement had a really solid night offensively with 101 yards and 1TD. It was once again KGP‘s defense who let them down the most as they had no answers for RL‘s offense.

  • The Jamesons vs. Dime and Bougie: Will Manu Allard-Roy step it up versus his old squad? Who can guard Anthony Brisebois on Dime and Bougie? Can Jules Regimbald put up another stellar performance against another great defensive team?

Result: 48-13 DB

Dime and Bougie came out hot in this one and never looked back. It was another stellar defensive performance for DB as they picked off opposing QB Jeff Rosenblatt 4 times and only let The Jamesons‘ offense score twice. Manu Allard-Roy had a great night with 3 catches and a pick-6 on his Spearhead teammate. It was Gab Champagne who was tasked to guard Anthony Brisebois and he didn’t disappoint. He picked off Jeff Rosenblatt and didn’t allow Brisebois to beat him deep, as Brisebois‘ only touchdown came in garbage time. Jules Regimbald had another stellar performance as he was able to stretch the field vertically with speedster Felix Boutet who caught 5 of his QB’s passes for 104 yards and 3TDs.

It was a night to forget for The Jamesons, but Skylar Bayliff’s performance under center was impressive. Are we due for a QB controversy?

  • KGP vs. Flag Moi L’Sac: How is KGP going to stop the combination of Francois Rocheleau Samuel Nadeau-Piuze, and JD Chevalier? What will KGP do with their less than ideal situation at QB?

Result: 32-14 Flag Moi L’Sac

KGP had no answer for the speed of Francois Rocheleau who decimated their defense with 146 yards and 3TDs. Not only that, Rocheleau dominated on the defensive side as well as he picked off Phil Cutler twice, sacked him once and deflected another one of his passes to add insult to injury. It was a dominant performance by one of the fastest and most talented players in FPF. We also saw the return of Guillaume Paquet who didn’t miss a beat catching 2TDs and intercepting Cutler once. Alex Nadeau-Piuze had his best performance of the season, but it will still remain to be seen whether he can repeat his performance against better defenses.

Will KGP finally get out of their slump and win a game?

Division A Power Rankings

With only one game being played in Div A last week, there isn’t going to be much for me to add on this week, but there is still some movement.

#1 Da Braves (last week: #1)

#2 Party Crashers (last week: #3)

#3 Spearhead (last week: #4)

After a frustrating start to the season, the very convincing win over Mangoose sees them rise above them in the standings. I hesitated between moving them up, but they lost to Party Crashers in Week 3 so they will stay put for now.

#4 Mangoose (last week: #2)

This team was in probation for the number 2 spot and for good reason. They haven’t played this level yet and they were due for a regression; and what a regression it was. The loss to Spearhead was humiliating and now leaves them on probation for spot 4.

#5 Blessed (last week: #5)

#6 KGP (last week: #6)

#7 Wyeth’s Rejects (last week: #7)

Can Party Crashers beat both Mangoose in A and RL in 5v5?

5v5 Power Rankings

#1 Braves (last week: #1)

#2 Dime and Bougie (last week: #3)

The team needed to prove that the win over Party Crashers was not a fluke, and they did, destroying The Jamesons last Tuesday.

#3 Party Crashers (last week: #2)

Having not played, they get jumped by the soaring Dime and Bougie.

#4 Royaume Luminaire (last week: #6)

I said last week that if Dan Lazzara kept showing up this team was a more serious contender, and he did show up last week. Beating KGP doesn’t prove much at this point of the season but they’re not far off from spots 2 and 3.

#5 Flag Moi L’Sac (last week: #5)

In the same vein, the team finally put up a good performance but it was against KGP.

#6 The Jamesons (last week: #4)

The devastating loss to Dime and Bougie doesn’t bode well for this team’s success going forward

#7 KGP (last week: #7)

Something needs to change and fast, or else this team is heading home and not coming back after week 10.
