35+ week 9 recap: one week to go
35 + Week 9 Recap
With 2 games left, Week 9 arrives in 35+ with everyone jockeying for playoff position. As everyone makes the playoffs in 35+, the do or die urgency of making the playoffs is missing but teams definitely want to hit a winning streak as playoffs approach. Top 3 teams in each division have a first round bye, as teams 4 and 5 will play in the quarter finals in the hope of extending their season. While finishing 4th or 5th might not be the result a team wanted, you do get an extra game in a no-charge! Nothing wrong with that.
Here we go.
Teams Division
The Leons 38 – Oldpack 13
As Spring Break was here, we expected some missing faces and Oldpack was definitely missing Pascal Murray this game. Alexandre Cavanaugh steps in at QB for the first time this season and unfortunately the offence can’t find it’s way against an aggressive and tough Leons defence. Alexandre helps himself out with a big game on Defence ( 5 tackles, 1 INT, 1 PD) but the rhythm wasn’t there offensively for Oldpack this week. Even with missing a game this week, Pascal Murray is still the passing leader for the whole division with 1,559 yards, so you can see how missed he was.
The Leons move into first place with the win, they are tied with 35ers but own the tiebreaker, they essentially do their thing scoring often and hold Oldpack to a season low 13 points. Ryan Tereskewtiz earns their 2 way player of the game award, leading with 3 tackles on defence to go with 3 TD’s on 6 catches on offence. The Leons have a big game next Thursday as they get a chance to avenge their only loss with their 2 game against Monster Football, but more importantly, they can clinch first place overall for the season with a win.
Monster Football 39 – Old Goats 6
In a preview of their Quarter Finals match-up, 1 team was ready and 1 team has work to do. Monster comes out swinging scoring a bunch and shutting down the Old Goats. Monster with a fairly full roster, sets the tone for their upcoming playoff match-up by having 3 QB’s throw TD’s, 5 players with TD’s, 7 players with catches and 7 players with tackles. With balance like that, it’s hard to lose and hard for your opponent to win. Old Goats with more of the same issues, able to move the ball short but not able to connect with the deep ball. They had a few trips to the red zone that didn’t turn into points which would have helped, but their defence wasn’t on point this week and Monster took advantage. Hopefully Old Goats recognize some weakness in the Monster attack and can pull off the upset when they meet again in 2 weeks. For Monster, they need to ensure they keep this momentum rolling through the next few weeks if they want to repeat as 35+ champions.
Draft Division
Aptech 26 – Paramount 19
Earlier in the year, Paramount beat Aptech by 7 points so in keeping the universe balanced, it was Aptech’s turn to win by 7. Sticking with the balance theme, both teams had 6 players with receptions, both teams also had 6 players with stats on defence. Where things weren’t balanced was the passing game, Aptech QB Gautama shines with 4 TD’s and 0 INT’s, Paramount QB Jon Moodie, while scoring 2 TD’s using his legs, can’t find the end zone through the air with only 1 TD and 1 INT. Too many 4th down turnovers by Paramount gives Aptech a well earned victory. Aptech picks up a key 2 points and now have a chance to finish as high as second with a win and help next week. The Aptech/Polvige winner next week gets a bye so it’s a critical game for both squads.
Dagwoods 32 – Relics 12
Shawn Payne gets his 2nd start at QB for Relics, but unfortunately is tasked with taking on first place Dagwoods in the dreaded 10.30 timeslot. He manages to spread the ball around to every receiver but 3 Picks are the nail in the coffin for Relics this night. Both teams displayed the balance mentioned in the game above, combining for 11 players with receptions and 13 players with tackles. Relics have completed their regular season with the bye next week, so they can re-group to get ready for their TBD quarterfinals opponent in hopes of a semi-final match-up against Dagwoods. Dags continue to win and have officially won the regular season championship for the 2nd year in a row, Congrats!. While the roster’s change in the draft division, the jersey is clearly a lucky one!
