Division 5A – Week 10 Highlights
- We are once again opening the week talking about Les Petites Carottes, but this time, for good reasons. After losing earlier in the week to Rico Ryders, they pull off the ultimate upset to stay relevant in the playoff race. They got Philip Pelletier, who has thrown for ZT’s in past Winter seasons and who threw in their first game of this Winter season, to come in and surprise the West Island Boys. It was a game that ultimately came down to converts. That’s 3 games now for the West Island Boys that are decided by converts and are 0-3 in those games. Something to watch out for come playoff time?
- It appears that Clinkers will be going with Kris Verreault at QB. The guy is getting reps in other flag leagues and has a 5:1 ratio right in with the team right now. The only thing is, he has 2 GP’s under his name with 1 more Clinker game remaining. The only thing the team can do is hope that between his first game played with them on Feb 19 and today, that the 3 games in between, they find a conflict with one of his other 3 teams he is playing on. If there is a conflict, they can have the GP granted for those games. Hopefully that totals 5 games for them, or their season will come down to Phil Aussant at QB (who also threw 5 TDs and 0 INTs this past week).
- Joey Notaro leads the Div with 8 balls batted down. Or does he have 8 missed INTs?
- No Friend Zone went 2-0 this week and have rattled off 7 wins in a row. Both games were close, even though the Ballers 15-point victory doesn’t suggest it. The Ballers game saw some highlight-reel catches from both sides, notably from Felix Boutet and Danick Coulombe.
- Their other opponent this past week, The Process, have a solid team and will look to make a deep playoff run come April, despite the 1-3 record in their last 4. They went went 1-1 this week and put up 77 points in the 2 games combined.
- Even with Nic Groppini and Sam Anastasopoulos added as WR threats, Him University couldn’t get past Clinkers, dropping that affair 39-20.
- Luis Begin WR stats in his past 3 games: 123 yards, 4 TDs / 113 yards, 3 TDs / 119 yards, 3 TDs. He is burning HOT and has catapulted himself as the #1 receiver in the division and the first receiver to 20 TDs!
- None of the teams at the bottom are officially eliminated yet, so everyone is in contention going into Week 11.
- Buffalo Wild Wings drop both of their matchups in Week 10 to drop to 3-4-1 on the season.
- Justin Swaminadhan made his Div 5 debut and caught all 4 balls directed his way for 27 yards and a TD on 4th down.
- Can Rico Ryders ruin the perfect season for the Big Fat Bats?
- Felix Boutet and AJ Zeppetelli lead the division with 5 extra points for two.
- Justin Lerner had a hat-trick of TDs on Sunday night over LPC at Hebert and is the 3rd most targeted receiver in the Division with 59 balls thrown his way.
- No Friend Zone are the only team in 5A with three 400-yard receivers, plus a 250-yard receiver. That’s depth at receiver.
- Ariel Librati has picks in back-to-back games, including a pick 6 against the Glory Boyz.
- With just 5 games under his belt, Jordan Lessard is T-12th in TDs with 8.
Game Preview
Ballers vs. Red “Not” Skins
This should be a great battle of the Top 2 teams in Group A. Both teams are similar in that there is a lot of talent on the offensive side of the ball, but both teams haven’t lived up to their offensive potential. Both teams are capable of putting up 30+ points week in and week out, and while Red “Not” Skins are averaging 30 points a game, they’ve done it in half the games, so I would want to see more consistency from the offense. Both Quarterbacks play as of late hasn’t been up to their potential, and I think both would agree. Antoine Roger has a 3:1 TD-to-INT ratio which is really the bare minimum for success while Mat Kieljan currently is at 2:1. While Roger has the edge in the ratio, he’s thrown 21 TDs in 7 games, while Kieljian has thrown just 1 less TD in 2 less games played. Give me the 4 TD average over the 3 TDs in a game all day, any day. In fact, even 4 TDs a game is the lower limit of what you want to see. Both teams are lucky to have a combined 11-2-1 record with such low-scoring* offenses. *I say low-scoring because by Division 5, I expect teams that are athletic and have experience like both teams do, to be scoring 5 TDs a game. This number is the classic “Peeze golden rule of thumb for the MINIMUM number of TDs you need to win a playoff game”. Both teams have been bailed out by their talented defenses.
Ballers have intercepted opposing quarterbacks 15 teams in 7 games while Red “Not” Skins have done so 18 times in 6 games. These are crazy numbers, to be able to give your offense the ball 2-3 times back without giving up points. That said, combing two quarterbacks who love to take their deep shots against athletic defenders feels like a perfect blend for a night with 6 or more interceptions combined. The offenses will need to look to drive the field instead of get impatient and force the ball deep. This favors the Red “Not” Skins offense, as they have a more balanced receiver set than the Ballers, with five 100-yard+ receivers, while Ballers are more of a 2-receiver heavy set kind of offense with Jacob Gagné and Danick Coulombe. That, plus the 62% completion percentage from Kieljian is more likely to sustain a drive downfield compared to Roger‘s 55%.
While there will be many interceptions, I can see the scorekeeper being put to work flipping those numbers for a high-scoring game
Prediction: Ballers 31 – 38 Red “Not Skins

Division 5B
Week 10 News and Notes:
- As much as the Stormers have struggled, Alec Richard-Nantel is the 2nd leading passer in Passing Yards with 1,430.
- Jeff Tayeh has catapulted himself as the Division’s top passer. He leads the league in Passing Yards (1492) and Passing TDs (41).
- Vick in a Box went 1-1 in their 2 games in Week 10, as they bested Stormers but lost by 1 point to Team Sexy. The 19-yard TD by Sam Anastasopoulos and the 2-point convert by Vaughn Vanslet gave them a 7 point lead which was huge, as Craig Browning would score on the last play of the game and were unable to convert on the 2 points convert for the win.
- Pocket Rockets had a change to really cement their playoff spot, but lost by 1 to Stormers Sunday at Loyola. They do have a lighter schedule, playing Blues and BSHU, but they gotta execute on the field, which, with more reps from playing together in other leagues, they are building chemistry at a bit of a faster clip than other teams.
- Vick in a Box have their first true test since their Week 2 tie against Vick in a Box when they face off against Killer Rays in Week 12. But first, a Bye week.
- Primal took care of Red Dragons, as Guillaume Boulanger didn’t have his best outing, throwing for 3 TDs and 4 INTs. Antoine Chabot had 2 picks, while Emile Chateauvert and Valéry Shelder had pick 6’s to put up 12 on the board, with Shelder‘s being the true back-breaker.
- Primetime played their best game of the season, tying the undefeated Killer Rays, 27-27. There was some controversy with the rosters in this one, but ultimately, the league upheld the decision and the tie stands.
- No Punt Intended had a 31 – 26 victory over Primetime, but busted the cap by 8 points by bringing in Jordan Lessard. That shifted the tides, as Primetime are close to clinching a playoff spot while No Punt Intended are close to being near the bottom 5 teams. With matchups against Green Monster and What Could Have Beens on back-to-back days, their season may be determined by this Sunday, March 19th. They will be paying close attention to Brewers and Wolf, 2 teams with 4 points on the season and 2 games remaining each.
- Cover 3 vs. Brewers is a must-win for Brewers if they want to taste the playoff rounds.
- Another big game for playoff contention will be Blues vs. Pocket Rockets on Monday night in St. Laurent.
- Johnny Paradis-Wilson‘s best performance on the season came just at the right time for the Blues, as he threw for a season-high 4 TDs against the Brewers. The Brewers threw Vincent Cheung out there, and he did his damage with 8 receptions and 118 yards and 2 TDs, but after him, the offense sputtered; no other receiver had more than 23 yards.
- It’s no surprise that both Nicolas Sanche (Vick in a Box) and John Greene (What Could Have Beens) are league leaders in tackles; they are both tackling machines.
- Valéry Shelder is returning 60% of his INTs to the house. His 3 Pick 6’s lead all of 5B.
- Teams need to watch out for Les Bleue Dry and their 2-point converts. They’ve successfully converted 10 of them so far.
- Who will finish the most receiving touchdowns? Max Burah and Antoine Chabot both have 15 while Timoté Nehma-Lacasse is right behind them with 14.
- We’ve got some good matchups, perhaps even playoff previews in Week 11, with Red Dragons facing off against Warriors, Primetime will be showing their growth against The Penetrators and Primal will look to avoid getting wasted by Les Bleue Dry.
