Division 5B: Mid-Season Team Reviews Part 1
Hey everyone, we are back for our first of two Team Review articles. Several teams have played at least 5 games so it will be good to look at where each team stands and where I can see them by the end of the 10th game. Before that, I have included the fantasy football result against Alex O’Neill from last week so let’s check that out first!
Week 7 Fantasy Football Results
Team Reviews
Chateauguay Community College (4-1, 36.6pts for, 22.0pts allowed)
Overall Grade: A
MVP: Mathys Dubois
A 4-1 start for CCC is nothing to look past. Zachary Gaudette has been very good at QB with 23 TDs in 5 games. A spread offence where four receivers have over t catches and six receivers with at least 8 catches proves that anyone on offence is a concern. Their defence is one of the best in the division as they are 9th in points allowed per game and have 9 INTs as a team so far. Their only loss was against Swiffer WetJets and it was an uncharacteristic game from Gaudette with 3 INTs. With this momentum, games later in the season against Demons and We Ain’t Done With the 90’s will be a true test for this team if they are a team to watch come championship weekend.
Chomedey Chodes (2-4, 17.2pts for, 24.8pts allowed)
Overall Grade: C
MVP: Brock Zwicker
With the Bottazzi twins being suspended for a few games, their presence was missed in those games. What I can applaud is the rest of their core stepping up. Chris Drukker, a player who I admire his game and effort, is on pace for his best season in FPF. A team where their offence is predictable but often teams can’t stop, it’s not too late to get back on track. If the Bottazzi brothers can stay on the field for the rest of the season, I can see this 2-4 start turn to a 5-5 regular season which given the circumstances, will be a success.
Deep Zone Penetrators (3-3, 28.0pts for, 21.2pts allowed)
Overall Grade: B
MVP: Eliott Bourque
I’ve watched this team play in their win against P.I Central and I was surprised that they sit 3-3 six games in due to their athleticism and high IQ players.. Samuel Langlais has a solid arm and with a 4:1 ratio so far, their offence has been good. Even their defence is one of the best as Yann Dika-Balotoken and Nikolas Bitzakidis lead the team with 4 INTs each. Shocking losses to both Puff Puff Pass and Chomedey Chodes were not on my agenda but on any given day, a team is not performing to their expectations. I am concerned for the remainder of their season as they have the ability to go 4-0 against very good teams but if they resort to playing down to some opponents, those losses can add up quickly.
Demons (5-0, 35.2pts for, 16.4pts allowed)
Overall Grade: A+
MVP: Zayden Kung’u
One of 4 undefeated teams remaining, Demons have done much better with their QB Ben Eglencyan running the show. A true duel threat on the ground as I watched him torch South Shore Crashouts with 156yds on the ground alone. They have a good offence and Neil Wright has proven to be a vocal leader on both sides of the ball. They rank 1st and 3rd respectively in INTs and sacks so far. My only concern is their strength of schedule. I was on a team last summer that went 10-0, and even played this Demons team without Eglencyan in the playoff in a blowout win but once we played a team that challenged us in the next round, we weren’t prepped and lost. They play my McGill Swim team tonight and play CCC which should be a great game. I wouldn't be surprised at a 10-0 finish as this team has everything clicking right now.
Green Monster Family (2-3, 19.0pts for, 24.0pts allowed)
Overall Grade: C+
MVP: Kevin Paul-Emile (check downs for sacks)
Green Monster Family is another team where they can have very good games and games where I question the result. Their first game was a close loss to CCC but in Week 3, barely won against 7eleven and even lost their most recent game against South Shore Crashouts. Paul-Emile has sacks in 4 of the 5 games played in key scenarios. It’s Patrick Jazon’s first full season throwing since Winter 2023 in this very Division and he’s on pace for nearly identical numbers as three years ago. Their next 3 games is the toughest stretch of their season and if they can come out 2-1 or better, my look to this team will be very different by the end of the regular season.
P.I Central (3-2-1, 25.8pts for, 24.2pts allowed)
Overall Grade: B
MVP: Boby-Andrew Poteau
A team I’ve seen play a few times now as they have played recently on days I’m in Brossard. A team of former tackle football players from Sun Youth know the flag game as a basis. I’ve spoken to captain Nelson Massa-Norville about some of the struggles so far and he has told me that availability has been an issue. Even with a 3-2-1 record, this team struggles when they have a higher competition. The season is still not over and their final 4 games aren’t against teams at the bottom of the table. This will be a true test if P.I Central can avoid the flags being called on them and build momentum down the stretch.
Puff Puff Pass (1-4, 16.8pts for, 28.8pts allowed)
Overall Grade: C-
MVP: Kevin Donnet
A great group of guys but haven’t found their fitting yet in 5B. Having Kevin Donnet on both sides of the field helps QB Stefano Spagnuolo out a lot but it can’t be relied on one guy. Outside of their season opener win where they scored 26 points, they haven’t eclipsed 20 since. They do have a similar matchup against Rampage tonight but with 3 top 14 teams remaining on the schedule, the odds aren’t in their favour.
Rampage (0-5, 9.8pts for, 32pts allowed)
Overall Grade: D
MVP: Dernst DuBuisson-Desmornes
One of two winless teams so far, it hasn’t been a good first half for Rampage. Jack Basch has struggled with 11 INTs to his 5 TDs. This large roster would have probably benefited from playing in Division 6 to ease themselves in as it’s been a rough start and I don’t think they have even hit their rough stretch in their schedule. Each game should be looked at as improvement. I say this as I’m 0-3-1 in my first full season at QB so I can understand the frustration at this point. They have a winnable game against Puff Puff Pass tonight so a win can set their foot towards the right step.
South Shore Crashouts (1-4, 25.4pts for, 35.2pts allowed)
Overall Grade: C
MVP: Mathis Pilon
I’m quite surprised at the 1-4 start for South Shore Crashouts. I would see Justin Pace throw and he’s very solid. He currently has 14 TDs to 7 INTs. The INT total is high but for a 1-4 team, can’t really say it’s mainly his fault. Mathis Pilon is the start of this team on both sides. Having experience with OneStop in Division 1 and a USports athlete, it’s alarming that this team struggles defensively. I think it’s a mix of new players in FPF still learning how to play but it’s not like they can’t score points. They have played against three undefeated teams so far so their schedule will get easier down the line. Will this team make the switch to gain momentum for a playoff spot?
Swiffer WetJets (4-1, 24.0pts for, 19.8pts allowed)
Overall Grade: A-
MVP: Alex Chin
A similar case to Demons where I think strength of schedule comes into play but unlike Demons, Swiffer WetJets doesn’t score too many points. This is also a bit inflated due to only scoring 2 points in their loss to We Ain’t Done With the 90’s but zero TDs in any game is rough. Making the switch from Alex to Andrew Chin a few seasons ago has benefited their offence. I’ve noticed where the team uses more flag concepts as they are gaining experience but I’m surprised with the low amount of points they are scoring. Even though defences can be strong, Division 5 isn’t a place where 24 points per game will win you a championship. I don’t want this to sound negative because a 4-1 start is always good but I think for this team, they should be aiming for the playoffs and post-season success. Looking at the rest of the season. Swiffer WetJets have an easier schedule but if they don’t show they can put up 30+ points consistently, I wonder how they will fare against a team who will challenge their defence.
The Perplexors (1-4, 25.0pts for, 24.6pts allowed)
Overall Grade: C
MVP: Zachary Mastromonaco
Another team where I’m surprised at their struggles at this point. David Bartolucci is a veteran QB in FPF but has always had issues with turnovers and completion rate. I think this roster is the most talented he has had with Zachary Mastromonaco, Brandon Kerr and Zachary Kott. I’ve played against these guys and watched many of their games, those players I just named are good players. Even if they were to lose against top teams, it’s the way they have lost them. Blowouts to CATCH & FLEX and We Ain’t Done With the 90’s aren’t helpful but with the second half of their season incoming, I do expect Bartolucci to lean heavily on his top guys. They don’t have the easier remaining schedule but they have games that they can win. If Bartolucci can improve his completion rate and limit INTs, watch this team in the 2nd half of the season.
