Division 5B: Week 7 Fantasy Football & Speaking with Dominic Weidner
Hey everyone, we are back for another week of flag football in Division 5B. At this time, we have four undefeated teams at 4-0 which are We Ain’t Done With the 90’s, Demons and Bend Don’t Break. I’m familiar with each of those three, especially the latter who gave my McGill Swim Team a 36pt beatdown two weeks ago. With the majority of teams reaching their mid-season point, next week I’ll start my reviews on each team and how I see their remaining schedule go. For this week, we have our fantasy football lineups by the QB of Catch & Flex Alex O’Neill and myself. If you see your name, expect that we want you to ball out and if you don’t ball you and don’t be afraid to call me out. We also will have a chance to have our player spotlight with Dominic Weidner, currently leading the division with 9 TDs as part of Bend Don’t Break.

Player Spotlight: Dominic Weidner
Who are you for people who don’t know you yet? What’s your story with flag football? Did you expect to still be playing today when you first started?
I am Dominic Weidner, I play for Bend Don’t Break in Division 5. This is my 7th season playing FPF, starting back in 2023. My first ever flag experience was with FPF in the Winter 2023 season, I still play with a lot of the same players from that team. The first season we had a bit of growing pains but we really started getting the feel of flag when we made the finals in our 2nd season the spring of that year. I honestly did not expect to still be playing flag football today, although I definitely knew that I wanted to still be playing 3+ years later. The reason I didn’t expect to still be playing is that my teammates and I were about to go to University, and some guys on our team were going to be moving away. I knew it was going to be difficult to keep the team going but through a couple of team name changes and players coming and going we still have a strong core from that original Winter 2023 team (Practice Squad).
What’s your favorite thing to do on the field?
My favourite thing to do on the field is honestly just running routes, I love trying new techniques to get open.
How do you stay locked in during close games?
I stay locked in by just focusing on doing my job as best as I can on every play, if everyone does their 1/6th responsibility good things happen.
What’s the vibe of your team?
The vibe of our team is great, we’re all young and we are friends outside of flag. We always have tons of fun at our games, usually staying and talking for at least a half hour after our games are done. We look forward to our games all week, it’s something to get excited about especially during the busy school year.
What can you take away from previous finals appearances to finally get over the hump this season?
Something I can take away from previous finals experiences so that we can finally get over the hump is just making sure every player on the team is brought in. We’ve had some up and down regular seasons in the past, where the whole team is not on the same page and we’re not having as much fun as we usually do. Guys are still figuring out their roles and learning how to embrace them. Our best playoff runs are when everyone knows and embraces their role, and plays that role to the highest level. When everyone is doing their 1/6th when they are on the field we are a very hard team to beat. To get everyone bought in we need to make sure everyone is getting playing time, getting involved, and is genuinely having fun playing flag. That’s exactly what we had during last season's playoffs and is a big reason for our success.
Jersey number story?
The reason I chose number 88 is because of Demaryius Thomas. I’m a huge Denver Broncos fan and he is my favourite receiver of all time. I’ve had his jersey hung up in my room since his death a few years back.
