Co-Ed 5v5: Short and Sweet Week 10
Week 10 has the feel of quality over quantity, as we only have two games this week. Despite the shortage of matchups, both contests aren’t lacking in impact, as teams are trying to climb and solidify their spot in the standings.
Maple Syrup versus Flag Moi D'quoi
The first meeting between both teams took place on the opening night of the season. The game featured two major storylines. The first is that Flag Moi D'quoi was without the services of Hall-of-Fame Quarterback Alex Nadeau-Piuze. He was mainly replaced by Dimitri Sinodinos. The former McGill Redbird QB was solid in relief, as he completed 16 of 23 passes for 211 yards for two touchdowns and an interception.
He wasn’t the only player who lined up behind Snapper for the team, as Alex’s brother Samuel Nadeau-Piuze also took a few snaps. Those plays were spectacular, as he would connect on all three of his attempts for only 19 yards, but two of them went for TDs. Nadeau-Piuze also made an impact on the other side of the ball, as he recorded an INT off QB Marc-Andre Reeves.
Both players were solid for Flag Moi D'quoi, but the player who had the biggest impact was Receiver Francois Rocheleau. The Team Canada member turned in a usual day at the office with nine catches for a game-high 134 yards and three touchdowns, and in the process showed why many people think he is the best player at his position in FPF. Just like Nadeau-Piuze, Rocheleau showed his versatility, as he intercepted Reeves as well.
For Maple Syrup, despite the loss, there were still a few bright spots. The team got a solid outing from Geraldine Cabillo-Abante, who many think is the best female Receiver in the league. The former McGill Martlet Point Guard and six-time FPF All-Star led her team with two touchdowns on four catches for 41 yards.
One defense, the team was led by Rusher Jean-Sebastien St-Arneault who had two sacks, and FPF Hall-of-Famer Serge Pilon Jr., who registered six tackles, three pass deflections and an INT.
Coming into tonight’s showdown, Flag Moi D'quoi has been on a four-game slide. They currently sit in fourth place. Their last victory was all the way back in the first week of June in Week 3 versus Air Buds. Clearly, this squad needs to get back into the win column, and soon.
Maple Syrup hasn’t been much better, as they have lost two in a row and three out of their last four games overall. With a matchup against Activated just four days from now, it will be a short turnaround for the former. Going into that game fresh off a win tonight, will be crucial for momentum.
I expect Alex Nadeau-Piuze to be in the lineup tonight. Flag Moi D'quoi beat Maple Syrup last time without him. I think they will get the sweep tonight.
Activated versus The IG Team
We are already in Week 10. With a six-team division it is a little surprising that both teams have yet to lock horns with one another, yet here we are. Perhaps it is fitting, as both squads sit at the bottom of the standings tied with identical (2-5) records, and each has only three games left on their schedule.
These teams are similar. Both have uber fast and athletic Quarterbacks in Jeanslee Alexis and Ben McMahon. Each side also has big-time Receivers and Defensive Backs in Lara Uzoka, Jordanson Alexis, Rory Semerjian, Heidi Ocana Lynch, Abigaelle Perreault, Sharlyn Vixamar, Eloise Lefebvre, Marika Bouchard, Samuel Omombo, Ethan Adrian, Fritzgerald Cenatus, Alyssa Goulet, and Victoria Bouchard.
Speed is the name of the game for both teams, but they can also get after it and beat you in a variety of ways. Will they both try to air it out right away? Will each Quarterback start off by going short and baiting their opponents to cheat down before attacking with deep shots, or will McMahon and Alexis just take what the defense gives them and play it safe early?
Coming into Tuesday’s matchup, Activated sits in fourth place, and are looking to get their record over .500 for the first time this season. They are coming off a tough loss to Air Buds this past Tuesday in which they scored a season-low three touchdowns in a (36-20) loss.
The IG Team comes into the contest having lost for the first time in five games as they fell (40-35) to Touski this past Tuesday.
After usually gashing opponents with the run game and aggressive defense, the IG Team got a taste of their own medicine, as Touski’s Tamara Boulanger ran for a 24-yard touchdown and also returned an interception back to the house for a score.
The win for Touski was huge, as it put them just two points back of The IG Team for second place in the standings, with four games remaining for both teams.
For The IG Team it was their first loss since they fell to Maple Syrup in the opening game of the season. They’ll be looking to get back on track as well as send a message, as the rematch between both teams will be 10 days later.
This game has excitement written all over it. The important thing to keep in mind is that while it can easily turn into a shootout, it can also morph into a tight defensive contest.
I think Activated gets back into the win column and extends The IG Team’s losing streak to two games.
