With the regular season winding down, the standings look settled at the top and messy everywhere else. Flagvengers are unbeaten and have the top seed to themselves. Mighty Schmucks hold the second bye spot for now, but Coconut Gang and Junkyard Dogs are only one game back and could still catch them. Below that group, with different numbers of games still to play, four teams are sorting out who plays who, and where, when the playoffs open on August 10.

But the storyline that will define this stretch run goes back a season. Last winter, Xavier Couture and Marc-Andre Reeves met in the Men's Intermediate final, and Couture came out on top. A season later, both quarterbacks are back at the front of the pack — and depending on how the next few weeks shake out, the league could be building toward the same matchup on the same stage.

The Byes: Why the Top Two Seeds Matter Most

Six teams make the playoffs. Seeds 1 and 2 skip the quarterfinal round entirely. Seeds 3 through 6 play win-or-go-home first, and whoever survives gets fed to the top seeds in the semifinal — seed 1 draws the lowest remaining seed, seed 2 draws the second-lowest. That means Flagvengers and Mighty Schmucks aren't just resting for a week; they're guaranteed to open the playoffs against whichever team looked shakiest getting there.

Flagvengers have banked that top seed with room to spare, but their last two results are worth a second look. They needed extra work to get past OnlyFlagz and Junkyard Dogs on back-to-back days in the same week, after opening the season with wider margins. Mighty Schmucks, meanwhile, have taken two losses of their own, and with Coconut Gang and Junkyard Dogs sitting just a game behind, the second bye spot is still theirs to defend rather than something they can bank on.

Below them, Coconut Gang and Junkyard Dogs are level on points, and the league's tiebreak rules matter here. Between two tied teams, wins are checked first, then head-to-head, then points allowed, then differential. Coconut Gang already hold the head-to-head card, having beaten Junkyard Dogs earlier this season — which currently gives them the tiebreak edge if it stays a two-team tie. If Void also finish level on points, though, the head-to-head rule drops out of a three-team tie in favor of points allowed and differential, and Junkyard Dogs' far stingier defense (168 points allowed to Coconut Gang's 247) would carry more weight. Void, who have played fewer games than anyone else in the division, are the wild card that could turn this into that three-team scenario before it's settled.

The Junkyard Dogs Are Winning a Different Game

While the top of the league is trading shootouts, Junkyard Dogs have built their season on the other side of the ball. Sanders Armand leads Men's Intermediate in tackles. Fabrice Pierre leads the league outright in sacks. Angelo Nimaja leads the league in passes defended and sits second in interceptions. It's the same team showing up across almost every defensive category, and it's a big reason their point differential — plus-76 — is actually the best in the division, ahead of even Flagvengers.

That defensive identity is exactly what could make Junkyard Dogs a difficult out in the quarterfinal round, regardless of which seed they end up holding when the regular season wraps.

The Stat Leaders

One number worth sitting with: Nicholas Di Maulo has 12 receiving touchdowns in just five games for Void — the same total Carli has needed seven games to reach. Void have also played fewer total games than anyone else in the division, which means both Di Maulo's numbers and the team's playoff position still have room to move before the regular season ends.

A Season Later: Couture and Reeves, Again?

Last winter's Men's Intermediate final came down to Xavier Couture and Marc-Andre Reeves, and Couture walked away with it. A season later, both quarterbacks are again sitting at the top of their teams' seeding picture, and the way the bracket is built means their path back to each other runs through the whole tournament, not just one round.

Flagvengers and Mighty Schmucks currently hold the two bye spots, and the semifinal pairing rule — seed 1 against the lowest remaining seed, seed 2 against the second-lowest — means Coconut Gang, if they hold the 3-seed through the quarterfinal round, would likely be matched with Mighty Schmucks in the semifinal rather than Flagvengers. If both Couture and Reeves win their way through, the stage where they'd meet again is the final itself.

The dates are already set. Inter 5v5 quarterfinals are Monday, August 10, with semifinals following on Monday, August 17, both at Complexe sportif Marie-Victorin. Championship Weekend runs August 22-23 at Brossard, with every final filmed and broadcast live. If Couture and Reeves do meet again, it will be on that stage — the same round as last time, a season later, with cameras rolling.

At the top, Flagvengers have the No. 1 seed to themselves, but Mighty Schmucks still have to hold off two teams breathing down their neck for the second bye — and however the bracket falls, all six playoff teams know the road to Brossard runs through August 10 and August 17 first.
