BIRDSSSS: A New Program Pushing the Division's Best

Three-quarters of the way through the season, a brand-new program has forced its way into the race for first place — and a head-to-head loss to Nyx hasn't changed the story.

With most of the schedule in the books, the race for first place in Women's Division A is tightest between BIRDSSSS and Nyx — though Purple Heat and Bleu Poud remain within range with games still to play. BIRDSSSS spent much of the season atop the standings before a Week 9 loss to Nyx, 20-13, handed the top spot to Nyx on the head-to-head tiebreak. Both teams sit at 10 points, but the story here isn't really about that one result — it's about what BIRDSSSS have built in their first season in the league, and how close they've come to finishing on top of it.

Inside BIRDSSSS' Debut Season

BIRDSSSS are new to FPF this season, but the players wearing the jersey are not new to the game. Between them, the roster carries experience from other FPF teams, CEGEP programs, and university football — but this is the first time this specific group has taken the field together as one program. It didn't take long for that experience to show. BIRDSSSS put together a strong showing at the Senior Flag Football National Championships at Claude-Robillard before the FPF season resumed, and they've carried that form directly into the back half of their divisional schedule.

Leading the way is quarterback Clarence Michaud, who has been one of the steadiest, most efficient passers in the division all season — reading the field well and taking care of the ball while still finding the end zone at a high rate.

Michaud's top target has been Alice Lucier, who is tied for the division lead with 10 receiving touchdowns on an 86.8% catch rate — one of the most productive quarterback-receiver connections in Women's A this season.

On defense, Eunice Fotso has been just as important to the group's success, putting up 22 tackles and 4 interceptions — including one returned for a touchdown — through 5 games. Di Loreto has added 4 sacks as a rusher, giving BIRDSSSS production on every level of the defense to match what they're doing offensively.

What makes BIRDSSSS' season even more notable is that this is still a relatively young group finding its footing together, and the fact that they've pushed their way into a first-place tie in their debut season says a lot about where this program could go. It'll be interesting to watch how BIRDSSSS develop from here, not just for the rest of this season but for the ones that follow.

Nyx (5-1, 1st) have gotten some of the steadiest quarterback play in the division, with Athena Ryan posting a 123 rating on 22 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions. Lara Uzoka and Delphine Baril give her two reliable, high-percentage targets, with Uzoka's 569 yards and 10 touchdowns leading all receivers in the division. A 20-13 win over BIRDSSSS in Week 9 has put Nyx back on top, though both teams remain tied on points with the schedule winding down.

Purple Heat (4-3, 3rd) sit just behind Nyx on points despite a losing point differential. Annie Tyers Lagacé's 74.5% completion rate is the best mark of any quarterback in the division, and Tamara Boulanger has been a steady presence on defense with 7 pass deflections.

Bleu Poud (3-2, 4th) have played the fewest games of anyone in the division but own the second-best point differential at +70. Emmanuelle Bronsard and Erika Magini have split time at quarterback efficiently, combining for 19 touchdowns against a single interception.

Chaos (2-5, 5th) have struggled to turn strong individual numbers into wins. Emma Townsend-Asselin leads the division in tackles (23) and pass deflections (9), and Sharlyn Vixamar's 5 interceptions are tops in the division — but Chaos have not been able to find enough offensive consistency to match it.

Sparks (1-6, 6th) have had the toughest season in Women's A, sitting last with a -140 point differential. Juliette Beauvais has absorbed a heavy workload at quarterback, throwing 12 interceptions against just 6 touchdowns.
