Division F: Big Wins, Bigger Statements in Week 3
Don’t worry Division F, you haven’t been forgotten either.
We are halfway through Week 4 and even though many teams have already played four or five games, there’s still roughly two months of football remaining before the playoffs. Bye weeks will soon start appearing, players will head off on vacations, teams will need to find replacements and everyone will be fighting to secure one of the top 16 seeds. There were plenty of headlines from both teams and individual players this past week, so let’s get into it.
Week 3 Headlines
A Switch Has Flipped for Bug Sax
Just over a week ago, Bug Sax sat at 0-2, but both losses were close games. When I looked at their roster before the season started, I noticed a few newer FPF players mixed in with some experienced young talent such as Logan Horn.
Having played flag football from a young age, including representing Team Quebec and starring at Loyola High School, you had to think that experience would eventually pay off.
In Week 3, it finally did.
Bug Sax opened the week with a 44-0 domination over Feu-Clé FJ before following it up with another convincing victory over Gamblers.
Quarterback Joseph Moran had a rough start to the season, but over the last two games he has looked exceptional, throwing 10 touchdowns while completing over 70% of his passes. Jeremy Horn became a touchdown machine with seven touchdowns across those two games, including five against Feu-Clé FJ.
Against Gamblers, Matheo Iannantunoi recorded five sacks while Marco Raimondo added three touchdowns.
Week 5 presents a huge challenge against Baby Sharks, a team loaded with height, experience and speed. If Bug Sax can pull off the upset, it would send a message to the rest of Division F that they are much more dangerous than their record suggested a few weeks ago.
Toolbox Gets Their First Win in Dramatic Fashion
Vicks Doghouse entered Sunday with something Toolbox didn't have this season: a win.
The two teams met in Laval and needed every second of the game to decide a winner.
In their second season together, Toolbox was looking for a better result than their 0-3 start. The addition of Julian Cerminara at quarterback has allowed Michael Iannuzzi to move into a receiver role, giving the offence another weapon.
For Vicks Doghouse, the offensive leaders coming into the game were Massimo Strenga and Marcus Arcangeli.
Toolbox controlled the first half and entered the break with a 20-7 lead. Outside of a rushing touchdown from Chris Toroyan, the Vicks Doghouse offence struggled to find consistency.
The second half was a completely different story.
After both teams exchanged stops on their opening drives, Toroyan connected with Dario Valiante for a long touchdown to make it a one-possession game. Nick Youssef then recorded the game's lone interception, which eventually led to a Strenga touchdown. After another stop, Youssef scored the go-ahead touchdown to give Vicks Doghouse the lead.
With their backs against the wall, Toolbox responded perfectly.
They marched down the field without an incompletion and eventually found the end zone through Iannuzzi for his second touchdown of the game and the game-winner.
Even in the lower divisions, there are some entertaining games if you know where to look.
We've Got Another Tie!
1664 Blancs and Zyn O'Clock battled to a 19-19 tie last Saturday at Concordia.
Looking at how the game unfolded, it honestly feels like either team could have won.
Both quarterbacks struggled early. Nicholas Fon did most of his damage with his legs, scoring twice on the ground for 1664 Blancs. Victor Desjardins answered through the air, but it took some time before the offence got rolling.
At halftime, Zyn O'Clock held a 12-6 lead.
1664 Blancs opened the second half with Fon's only touchdown pass of the game to Breno Amaral before Fon added his second rushing touchdown later in the half. Amazingly, Fon finished the game with only five completions and all five had already occurred before that final score.
With time winding down, Desjardins suddenly caught fire. He completed all five of his passes on the final drive and eventually found Xavier Béliveau in the end zone on the final play of regulation. Samuel Bérubé converted the extra point to tie the game.
1664 Blancs elected to go for two and the win but were unsuccessful. Zyn O'Clock then had one final chance to steal the victory but couldn't capitalize.
Both teams had opportunities to win late, making the tie feel much better than leaving with nothing.
TGs and Baby Sharks Continue Their Dominance
Two teams I fully expect to remain near the top of the standings all season continued to show why this past week.
Unfortunately, I was personally on the receiving end of one of those performances.
TGs took on a Westluc squad missing both Aaron and Aidan Lasry and immediately took advantage. They forced a turnover on Westluc's opening drive and never looked back.
Mano Kaliotzakis finished with just three incompletions while throwing six touchdown passes. Dylan Pietracupa led all receivers with eight receptions and added three interceptions defensively. Nicholas Knez contributed two touchdowns and an interception of his own.
As for Baby Sharks, they matched up against my Junior XL squad.
Having played against several of their players in the past, I knew the challenge would be significant.
Jonathan Caron's first season at quarterback has been extremely impressive. My defence isn't the strongest, but he made things look easy when opportunities presented themselves. He consistently called plays that challenged whatever defensive look I tried to throw at him.
Alexandre Sharkawi finished with 102 yards and two touchdowns while Maxime Sharkawi led all players with six receptions and added two touchdowns of his own.
Defensively, Baby Sharks were outstanding. Caron recorded a pick-six against me while the defence added three more interceptions.
No matter what adjustment I tried to make, it felt like they had an answer.
It was a reminder of how much work I still have to do as a quarterback, but more importantly, it was another statement about how complete and dangerous this Baby Sharks team really is.
Closing Remarks
That's all for this week's article. With roughly two months remaining in the regular season, there's still plenty of football left to be played, but we're beginning to see which teams are building momentum at the right time.
Can Bug Sax continue their turnaround against Baby Sharks? Will TGs and Baby Sharks remain undefeated? And which teams currently sitting in the middle of the standings can separate themselves from the pack before the bye weeks and summer vacations begin affecting rosters?
Best of luck to everyone taking the field this week. Stay hydrated, enjoy the competition and don't be surprised if we get a few more dramatic finishes before reaching the midpoint of the season.
As always, if there's a player, team or storyline you'd like covered in a future article, feel free to reach out to me at the fields or on social media.
