Women’s B: Midseason Push Begins in Week 4
Going into Week 4, we have a relatively good sample size of how each team is doing as we approach the halfway point of the season. With seven teams in Women's B, only one team will miss the playoffs while the top two teams earn a first-round bye. As it stands right now, Wolfpack are on the outside looking in, but La Sororité and Cavaliers each have just one win as well. With three more games being played later this afternoon, every result is starting to carry a little more weight.
Earlier this week, Cavaliers were able to fight their way to their first win of the season with a 19-18 victory over La Sororité. On a humid Thursday evening in Laval, Cavaliers jumped out to a 19-6 lead on the opening play of the second half after Adriana Valiante connected with Julianne Di Palma for a long touchdown. It was a huge day for the young receiver, who eclipsed 100 receiving yards for the first time in her FPF career. For a Cavaliers offence that has searched for consistency this season, Di Palma's breakout performance could not have come at a better time.
La Sororité responded quickly as Laurence Girard found the end zone on the ensuing possession to make it a one-score game. Both teams would trade stops before Catherine Schinck connected with Victoria Grenier on the final drive to bring La Sororité within one. Rather than settling for the tie, they went for the win. Unfortunately, the two-point conversion attempt came up short. Valiante would pick up a key first down in the dying seconds to secure Cavaliers' first victory of the Spring season.
Week 4 Preview
The Originals vs The Merge
Details: Saturday June 13th at 1 PM, Loyola Maisonneuve Field 2
These teams have not faced each other yet this season. The Originals currently sit atop the standings at 4-1 and continue to be one of the most complete teams in the division.
Jessica Bainville leads Women's B in passing yards, and more than half of those yards have gone to Marielle Paradis, who leads the division by a wide margin in nearly every receiving category. At this point, slowing down Paradis isn't about stopping her completely. It's about limiting the explosive plays that can change a game in an instant. Whether it's on short routes, intermediate concepts or deep balls, she's dangerous at every level of the field.
That means defenders Cindy Canuel and Samora Fanta Sacko could have huge roles in this matchup. Their size and athleticism may give The Merge their best chance at slowing down the league's most productive receiver. Whenever Paradis isn't touching the ball, it's usually Anne Bonin making plays on the opposite side.
For The Merge, the trio of Tabitha Thomas, Briana Tarricone and Sacko will have plenty on their shoulders as well. All three have surpassed 20 targets this season, showing how important they are to Sarah-Maude Hamel's offence. Meanwhile, all-around athlete Jade Shen-Moreau will be a major factor for The Originals whether it's through interceptions, sacks or pass breakups.
This one should be a battle. I think The Originals find a way to win, but if there was a game this week that could produce an upset, this might be it.
Prediction: The Originals def. The Merge 26-18
Hiboux vs Wolfpack
Details: Saturday June 13th at 1 PM, Loyola Sherbrooke Field 2
At the same time, the undefeated Hiboux will take on the seventh-place Wolfpack.
These teams met a few weeks ago, with Hiboux earning a 32-13 victory. It was actually a competitive game through halftime, with Hiboux leading by just one point before pulling away in the second half with three unanswered touchdowns.
The biggest challenge for Wolfpack has been on the defensive side of the ball. They are allowing 25 points per game, the highest mark in the division. While that number isn't overwhelming by itself, it becomes difficult when the offence is averaging just over nine points per game.
For Hiboux, everything seems to be clicking. From the play of Cassiopée Lemay to the athleticism and skill throughout the roster, this team has looked dominant from top to bottom. If Wolfpack wants any chance at the upset, they'll likely need their best defensive performance of the season.
I think Wolfpack plays with a chip on its shoulder and keeps things more competitive than the first meeting, but Hiboux remains undefeated.
Prediction: Hiboux def. Wolfpack 35-18
Supernova vs La Sororité
Details: Saturday June 13th at 4 PM, Loyola Sherbrooke Field 1
The matchup I'll be paying closest attention to is Supernova against La Sororité.
This will be the first of two meetings between these teams and it feels like a battle between talent and consistency. Supernova may have one of the most talented rosters in the division, while La Sororité has consistently put the same core group on the field every week.
Supernova enters the game coming off a tough loss to Wolfpack where Roseline Majeau posted 126 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, La Sororité is looking to avoid a third consecutive loss after dropping games to The Originals and Cavaliers.
Despite the recent losses, Catherine Schinck has quietly had a very good season. She is averaging three touchdown passes per game and has thrown only one interception all year. Defensively, La Sororité has been somewhere in the middle of the pack, but there have been flashes showing what this unit is capable of when everything is working.
For Supernova, availability continues to be the biggest storyline. Only Anne Pavia and Clarence Michaud have appeared in all four games this season and no other player has played at least three games. When everyone is present, Supernova has one of the deepest and most talented rosters in Women's B, filled with university and former CEGEP standouts.
Until I see more consistency with the roster, though, it's difficult for me to pick against La Sororité. This is my Game of the Week and I think they finally put an end to their losing streak.
Prediction: La Sororité def. Supernova 19-12
Closing Remarks
That's all for this week's article. With the temperatures continuing to rise and the playoff race beginning to tighten, best of luck to all seven teams taking the field this afternoon. Every game feels a little more important now, especially with only one team set to miss the playoffs and the race for the top two bye positions becoming more competitive each week.
Will Hiboux continue their dominant run? Can La Sororité bounce back and end their losing streak? Is Wolfpack capable of climbing back into the playoff picture? By this time next week, we should have a much clearer picture of where everyone stands heading into the second half of the season.
As always, if there's a player, team or storyline you'd like to see covered in a future article, don't hesitate to reach out to me at the fields or on social media.
