5v5 Competitive: Quarterfinals Recap
With the top 8 teams securing a playoff berth, the question was which team will be able to secure their spot in the top 4. On a Wednesday night in Brossard, we were able to have the answer to that question. With the four games in the quarterfinals, we saw blowouts, a forfeit and a game decided on the final play. Let’s get straight into the action.
Quarterfinals Recap
Flag Moi L’Sac def KGP Elite 33-26
Prediction: Flag Moi L’Sac def KGP Elite 44-38
The game I predicted to be the closest of the night did not disappoint. Both teams brought unique playstyles that tested each QB’s resilience and their respective defences on how to counter each offensive attack.
You had Alex Nadeau-Piuze, who took risks and was rewarded with QBOY, leading the division with 50 TDs. With that reward, it did come with 12 INTs due to his aggressive play. On the contrary, Phil Cutler seemingly knows how to dissect any type of defence without danger. He finished the season with 34 TDs and only 2 INTs in 8 games played. His ability to game-manage each play is a recipe that some may love but opponents despise.
KGP Elite took a 20–13 lead at the break, as Carl Achy and Guillaume Paquet each scored twice in the half. In the second half, Paquet fully took over, as he scored 3 more times, finding the end zone on each Flag Moi TD, finishing with 5 TDs in the win.
Paquet scored his final TD in the closing minutes, breaking the tie and giving Flag Moi a 7-point lead. Cutler moved the ball with two big plays to Rory Semerjian and Achy, but ultimately, the final pass in the end zone was incomplete, giving Flag Moi a 33–27 victory.
KGP only scored once in the second half, being stopped three times, which was the deciding factor, as Flag Moi went 3/3 in the second half in a first-game thriller.
Raw Dawgs def Naproxen 48-25
Prediction: Raw Dawgs def Naproxen 33-25
The regular season game between these two teams went to OT and was a great watch for viewers. It was a question of whether Naproxen would be able to replicate that performance or make things interesting now that Jordan Panetta would be starting at QB.
Unfortunately for Naproxen, Dimitri Sinodinos was not able to suit up, and a change like that in the playoffs came back to haunt them. Things looked promising early, as William Marchand picked off Panetta on the opening play of the game. Emilio Jaimes Leclair found Zachary Brassard on the following drive to open the scoring.
Raw Dawgs soon settled in, as Panetta found Adam Rosen to tie the game. Brassard found the end zone once again, and Rosen matched him with a deep throw from Panetta. Dan Mancini picked off Jaimes Leclair and was rewarded on the following play with a TD. Tyson Otis Copeland got an INT, swinging full momentum for Raw Dawgs, and from that point on, they didn’t look back.
Raw Dawgs kept the pressure, leading 25–12 at the break. Naproxen got points in the second half, but not before Raw Dawgs outscored them 23–13 in the half, ending the game 48–25 in favor of Raw Dawgs.
A different outcome may have been possible with Sinodinos in action, but for a first season for Naproxen, it was a successful year regardless. For Raw Dawgs, they were able to overcome an early scare and move on to the semifinals.
Braves def MTL Magic 30-0 (forfeit win)
Prediction: Braves def MTL Magic 46-18
MTL Magic would not have a full roster in this game which resulted in Braves moving on to the final four.
PartyCrashers def Bleue Dry 10.1 42-18
Prediction: PartyCrashers def Bleue Dry 35-21
Bleue Dry looked to crash the reign of PartyCrashers in the final game of the night. The first drives for each team resulted in TDs, and it looked like Bleue Dry would be able to maintain pace early in the game. They looked as if they would score their second TD on the following drive but were stopped in the PartyCrashers’ zone.
Jeanslee Alexis used his legs to evade Eric Namts’ sack attempts and was able to find Joseph for his second TD of the half. PartyCrashers led the game 28–12 at the break.
The game was already chippy from the opening play, and it continued into the second half. Early in the half, a DPI on Mendel Joseph resulted in a confrontation between Joseph and Ashton Thibeault, leading to both receiving an OC. This hurt Bleue Dry more than their opponents, as PartyCrashers were able to capitalize several more times in the half, ending the game with a 42–18 win.
Bleue Dry can go back to the drawing board after their first taste of the Competitive division but have found some bright spots. For PartyCrashers, a spot in the semifinals awaits them next Saturday.
