Division 5B: Quarterfinals Preview and Predictions
It’s been roughly 10 days since the Divisional round took place and here we are with our remaining 8 teams. There has been upsets along the way and now the top 4 teams from the regular season are back in action after a few weeks off. We got four games, all happening later tonight in Brossard. We will go through each one, getting some insight from two QBs in two separate matchups in Neil Wright from Demons and Xavier Delisle from Les Mangeux de Beignes. Let’s get straight into it.
Les Mangeux de Beignes vs We Ain’t Done With the 90’s
Previous matchup: tie 25-25
These teams met roughly a month ago, and it ended in a tie. Xavier Delisle threw for 206yds but also had 3 INTs. For the 90’s, Seth Galina was in at QB instead of Jamie Ojeaha in that game. I expect Ojeaha to be back, as it was the only game he missed.
Les Mangeux de Beignes have been on a heater since that game, going 3-0, with all those games being either win-and-in situations or playoff games, showing how locked in they’ve been. Delisle has 12 TDs with only 1 INT in that span. The defence has also stepped up, allowing just over 12pts per game.
For We Ain’t Done With the 90’s, they’ve only played one game in that stretch, a 33-27 win over Chateauguay Community College, and have been enjoying their bye since. I spoke with Delisle ahead of this matchup, and he was confident that sticking to their approach will get the job done.
Delisle kept things simple when talking about the team’s recent run:
“We haven't changed much. We still come to the games and have fun.”
Even with a different QB expected on the other side, he made it clear their approach won’t change:
He mentioned that they didn’t know Ojeaha was out in the first matchup, saying “that doesn't change how we play… we play every game the same way.”
When it comes to dealing with playmakers like Troy Lendvay, the mindset remains steady:
“We're not going to change anything. We'll adjust as needed during the game.”
Heading into this one, Delisle emphasized execution and keeping things simple offensively:
He noted that they need to stick to what’s been working, saying “the ball needs to be distributed evenly on offense and never have a tendency to overplay.”
For Xavier, avoiding turnovers will be key, something he has done well in recent games. Justin White stands across from him after leading the division with 9 INTs, and he will be a handful, especially if Delisle starts forcing plays.
Les Mangeux de Beignes have one of the deepest receiving corps, but Maxence Raeppel leads the team with 5 TDs this postseason. I expect him to find the end zone at least once in this game.
For the 90’s, Jamie didn’t play in the regular season matchup, but he brings plenty of experience. With only 5 INTs during the regular season, he will look to keep his stat line clean in this one.
With his team having been off for a month, will that come back to bite them? I think the 90’s might not play their best game early because of the break, but when it matters most, their playoff experience could force Les Mangeux de Beignes into a crucial mistake.
I can see this game being close until the very end, with We Ain’t Done With the 90’s escaping with a narrow victory in the final minutes. An upset is very possible, but with Ojeaha back, this team should move on in a very tight game.
Prediction: We Ain’t Done With the 90’s def Les Mangeux de Beignes 28-25
McGill Swim Team vs Demons
Previous matchup: Demons def McGill Swim Team 32-14
The regular season matchup was very one-sided. QB Ben Eglencyan torched my defence, even if he didn’t have his most explosive rushing game, finishing with 5 TDs. The McGill Swim Team offence was boxed in by the Demons defence, as they picked off Vaughn Vanslet 3 times.
Since that matchup, the Swim Team has gone 6-1, while Demons have gone 2-2. A big reason for the recent struggles for Demons has been injuries. Eglencyan got injured a few games later and has been sidelined since with a serious leg injury. Rusher of the Year Liam Del Guidice is also out for the season.
Neil Wright will be behind center, and he understands the challenge his team is facing. Regardless, Neil is smart, and he will do everything in his power to get this win.
Wright knows that with a limited roster, the priority will be taking care of the ball and keeping things simple:
“Honestly it’s going to be about giving ourselves a chance to win, not turning the ball over and keeping things simple on offence, as to not put stress on 3rd and 4th and light situations”
Even after a dominant regular season win, he made it clear that this rematch won’t be taken lightly:
He mentioned that this Swim Team has players they’ve lost to in the past, saying “we know what they’re capable of… our success is going to come from sticking to our game and not getting frustrated.”
Facing a team coming off a 7-INT performance, Wright emphasized the importance of staying composed and avoiding mistakes:
“Not throwing 7 INTs will for sure be a huge part of winning the game. With less bodies, we just gotta keep a short memory and make sure we don’t get frustrated over missed opportunities”
On the defensive side, execution and discipline will be key for Demons to stay in this one:
He noted that the defence will need to capitalize on opportunities, adding that “not giving up big plays and turning the ball over will be key in giving our offence second chances.”
My McGill Swim Team is coming off a 7-INT defensive performance last game and will look to continue that momentum against Wright. I’m not sure which players will be available for Demons, but they won’t back down.
Similar to what Neil said, his team will need to limit turnovers. Controlling the game from the start, getting into our players’ heads, and staying composed will be key. On the defensive end, they will need to rely on continuity, especially if the same group is playing most of the game.
For McGill Swim Team, the circumstances are in our favor, but we can’t take Demons lightly. Playing with an edge after being blown out in the regular season and not taking any drive or play off will be key. We need to constantly create pressure on both sides of the ball while staying disciplined.
This will be a great game between two very smart QBs, and I can’t wait to be part of it.
Deep Zone Penetrators vs Bend Don’t Break
Previous matchup: N/A
The undefeated Bend Don’t Break will take on the red-hot Deep Zone Penetrators. Bend Don’t Break have been off for over a month after a perfect 10–0 regular season and seemingly have the most complete team in the division.
Deep Zone Penetrators have won their last three games, starting with their playoff-clinching victory over Angry Birds on the final play of the season to secure their spot. They were able to beat Chomedey Chodes in a high-scoring OT game before a dominant win over Empereurs Retraités.
In his last three games, Samuel Langlais has thrown 13 TDs and zero INTs. His completion rate is the highest of any stretch, considering he threw just over 56% throughout the regular season. For his team to have a chance, he will need to be excellent against the best team in Division 5B.
For Bend Don’t Break, there are talks that they will not be available for the full championship run due to having to forfeit a game down the line, but if they are in action tonight, they will continue to build on their fantasy season from Winter 2026. With the duo of the QB and WR of the Year in Luke Moreau and Dominic Weidner, they will look to put up points with great efficiency.
On the defensive end, rusher Josh Notte will look to contain Langlais, as he’s not afraid to use his legs, averaging nearly 10yds per run on over 4 attempts per game.
For Deep Zone Penetrators, the defence will be key. Yann Dika-Balotoken will need to be all over the field on that side, and on offence, Tallec Baptiste will need to use his height and great ball skills to overpower the Bend Don’t Break defenders. Don’t be surprised if he gets at least 2 TDs, as I expect him to be heavily used by Langlais.
I think if Deep Zone Penetrators were against any other team, I would have them advancing into the final four, but with their matchup being against Bend Don’t Break, I think their run will end. Bend Don’t Break has too much firepower on both sides of the ball and will advance, but not before Deep Zone Penetrators make it a difficult battle tonight.
Predictions: Bend Don’t Break def Deep Zone Penetrators 38-30
CATCH & FLEX vs Chateauguay Community College
Previous matchup: N/A
Another matchup where the teams haven’t met this season. After losing their last two regular season games, Catch & Flex were in a battle with Angry Birds in the Divisional Round. If the box score is correct, Jadon Francis was in place of Alex O’Neill and only needed 8 completions to throw 4 TDs on 164yds. Francis also added a rushing TD in the win. I would assume O’Neill will be in action in this one.
Before their regular season finale loss to the 90’s group, CCC were on a 7-game win streak. Zachary Gaudette had a great year, as he was rewarded with an All-Star selection. With 6 receivers having at least 20 receptions, a very talented group of pass catchers will always be on the field for Chateauguay Community College.
Their defence is solid, but one thing they lack is a rusher who can finish plays. They haven’t had consistency there, and it shows with only 4 sacks all year. Whether it’s O’Neill or Francis at QB, the rush will be very important against two agile QB options.
For Catch & Flex, they can’t get into their own heads. I’ve seen it on multiple occasions where, against teams they can beat, they get in their heads. They play with their emotions, and when they are winning, it feeds off every player, but if they are losing, it becomes a huge issue. Players aren’t happy they aren’t getting the ball, there are defensive breakdowns, and in a blink of an eye, their whole team crumbles.
Richie Mondesir is the vet on this team, and he will need to keep this group together for the full 40 minutes. They have too many playmakers to lose because of their attitude.
Chateauguay Community College will need to play composed but also aggressive on both sides of the ball. They also need to keep their emotions in check, but they have found a groove on both sides of the ball for nearly the whole season.
Best against best, Chateauguay Community College should advance in this game, but Catch & Flex can win as well. I do think the higher seed will move on, but with an OT win for CCC.
.
Prediction: Chateauguay Community College def CATCH & FLEX 39-37 (OT)
