Division 5B: Breakout Players of Winter 2026
At this time, we are approaching the end of the Winter 2026 season. We started the season in 5B with 22 teams, all looking to finish their journey with a Division 5B championship, and in just a few days, the top 14 will be set on that path.
We have seen an undefeated Bend Don’t Break team look nearly unbeatable in every game this season. We’ve also seen the emergence of Chateauguay Community College, who now sit at 8–1, a complete turnaround from their 0–10 season in 4B last year. We’ve also seen teams from Division 6A a year ago continue their strong play, such as Swiffer WetJets and Angry Birds.
Before we get into a segment that I feel will be great to show the rest of the FPF community the talent Division 5B has to offer, I have the fantasy football results from last week against my teammate Vaughn Vanslet. This will be my final fantasy matchup for this season so I appreciate those who took part in it along with my Q & A during the season.
With that being said, there will only be a few players nominated for awards and all-star honours. As much as every player wants to win a championship, individual recognition is also important in highlighting great performances.
In the final full week of the regular season, I wanted to give props to players who I felt made the biggest jumps and truly broke out. Some of these players may earn all-star selections, while others might not, but they are all players to watch moving forward, regardless of the division they play in.
I’ve had the chance to watch all four of these players in some capacity this season, and while I knew each of them was talented, I didn’t expect them to take this kind of leap into becoming top players in their respective divisions. For readers who play in higher divisions, this could be a good opportunity to identify lower-division players who are ready to compete at the next level in the coming season.

My Winter 2026 Breakouts
Quarterback Breakout: Ben Eglencyan
In consideration: Jesse Kotlarczyk, Samuel Langlais
Ben Eglencyan’s historic run is unfortunately cut short with a leg injury that will have him sidelined for the rest of the regular season and into the playoffs. Eglencyan isn’t the tallest QB by any magnitude. What he has is speed and a lot of it. I first watched him torch South Shore Crashouts with 156yds rushing earlier in the season and I knew this guy would cause problems. He would continue his terror on the ground, averaging 79 yds rushing per game in 7 healthy games. The talk of the year was if Eglencyan would break the rushing record held by Félix Déry-Bernard with 759yds last Winter. It wasn’t impossible that by the game he got injured but he would have had a shot to be in the top 3 minimum. Eglencyan was part of the Demons championship team in Winter 2024 that was led by fellow rushing QB Max Guenette. Maybe it’s the recipe of the Demons identity to have a rushing QB but it has worked for them in the past. It’s too bad Eglencyan is hurt and we might not see how this Demons team would have looked with their starting QB come playoff time. I’ve been talking about the run game but even without being the tallest QB, Eglencyan has been efficient with a 69% completion rate and had 28 TDs in the air this season. Whether he decides to return this Spring or in future seasons, the team should always worry about him on the ground and not think by any regard he can’t get the ball out quick either.
Receiver/2-Way Breakout: Jonah Lazarovitz
In consideration: Alex Chin, Mathys Dubois
Bend Don’t Break finished the season with a perfect 10-0 record and have a roster that has played together for years with gaining experience each time around. Even with the success that this group has, my main focus was the two-way ability of QB Luke Moreau and his connection with Dominic Weidner. Not to say those two aren’t a huge piece because they both are. Moreau is the minimum winning QB of the Year and Weidner is currently leading 5B with 18 TDs. I was expecting that for both of these players. For Lazarovitz, he set career-highs on both sides of the ball and minimum, will be an all-star this season. He led Bend Don’t Break with nearly 600 receiving yards and also led the team with 8 INTs. This team was already dangerous and with the play of Lazarovitz on both sides this season, it’s a perfect scenario for this team to finally get the job done. A tall receiving threat who has great hands and isn’t afraid of challenging for the ball at the highest point, Lazarovitz has the ability to get even better with the skills he already has. He will presumingly play with Bend Don’t Break should they make a team this Spring but other teams should maybe try to get in contact with him as his roughly 70 rating on both sides of the ball doesn’t tell the full story if you ask me.
Defensive Back Breakout: Anthony Giannatsis
In consideration: Jeremy Methot Pizzi, Yann Dika-Balotoken
I have been the engine of the McGill Swim Team defence every season we have played in FPF and I had questioned how the team would fare in 5B after last winter. In 20 regular season games prior to this season, I accounted for 19 out of 35 INTs. In 5B, I knew that teams would be able to scheme the ball away from my direction and the simple play calls wouldn’t work as much. Having Tony step up this season has been huge and rewarding. When I voiced my need for more help, he was the first to step up, wanting to make the right play. He is willing to play deep, middle or in the flat so long as he has a chance to make a play. Tony also has previous success in flag playing with his good friend and talented two-way players in Nicholas Di Maulo who is now known as a top talent for Division 1’s The Infantry with GOAT QB Kevin Wyeth. Tony would have his breakout in a game against The Perplexors with a career high 4 INTs along with a pick6. He would also have an INT in each of the past two games. In my absence, he has taken responsibility for QBing the defence and also learning the game from a new perspective. What makes him a great defender is his communication between snaps and his tracking ability. I will never go a period between plays where he doesn't have anything to say and as a defender, you need your teammates to speak. Whether he’s playing short or deep, he is creating plays for himself and others. With two games remaining, he can climb the leaderboard in INTs to the top and he also missed two games already this season. My availability for the remainder of the season may be limited but with Tony emerging as being a real ballhawk threat, his low rating should attract captains in the coming summer season.
Rusher Breakout: Kevin Paul-Emile
In consideration: Liam Del Guidice
Green Monster Family won’t be playing past their 10 regular season games and it’s a shame that we won’t see Kevin Paul-Emile attack rushers come playoff time. GMF has been playing in 5B for a few seasons now but it was this winter where Paul-Emile took a huge leap as a rusher. Before this season, Paul-Emile’s career high was 6 sacks back in Winter 2023. In the 8 games he played this season, Paul-Emile only had one game without a sack and two games with 3 sacks. I’ve only watched Green Monster Family once this season and Paul-Emile has solid speed for a rusher but what I noticed is his ability to close off gaps for a QB to run. He is currently tied with Liam Del Guidice with 13 sacks on the year as both players unfortunately won’t be able to add to it for different reasons. For a non-playoff team, Green Monster Family sure has a stud in Paul-Emile for the coming seasons. Who’s to say that if he played the other two games he would have had 15+ sacks on the year?
Closing Remarks
Thanks to Vaughn for being part of this week’s article. If you don’t agree with my take, I’m always open to hearing what you have to say so don’t be shy and approach me! We only have one more full week of regular season play before playoffs so make sure you get your 5 games and DO NOT FORFEIT in the final week of the regular season or else you lose your playoff spot. As always, if you didn’t get a chance to respond or want to be included in future pieces, you can reach me on Facebook or Instagram @keyoncyrus.
